I can’t say enough great things about Dr. Hensen and staff! Everyone is incredibly friendly, professional, and compassionate. I am a first time dog mom and my baby has unfortunately had a few issues in his first year and a half. They truly take the time to listen to my concerns, answer all of my questions thoroughly, and ensure both I and my dog feel comfortable. He is generally a nervous and anxious dog and they talk him through every appointment. They even were able to clip his nails when he doesn’t let anyone do it!! It’s clear they genuinely love what they do. If you’re looking for a vet who treats your pet like family, this is the place to go!”

Somers Veterinary Hospital, located at 63 S Rd, Somers, CT 06071, USA, is a veterinary care facility operating within the Pet Hospital category. It provides a range of corresponding services and goods for the health and well-being of local pets. The hospital can be reached via phone at (860) 763-1000 or through their mobile number, +1 860-763-1000.
While the provided reviews do not offer explicit descriptions of the physical building's architecture or interior design, they strongly convey an atmosphere of comfort, professionalism, and genuine care. The emphasis on both pets and their humans feeling "comfortable" suggests that the environment is designed to be welcoming and reassuring. For a dog that is "generally a nervous and anxious," the fact that the staff can "talk him through every appointment" and even "clip his nails when he doesn’t let anyone do it" speaks volumes about a calm, patient, and probably well-structured environment that helps alleviate animal stress. This indicates that the hospital likely maintains a clean, organized, and perhaps quiet setting where animals feel less threatened. The positive interactions described imply a spacious enough waiting area and examination rooms that allow for gentle handling and thorough communication, contributing to a stress-free experience for both pets and their owners.
Based on the customer testimonials, Somers Veterinary Hospital, as a Pet Hospital, provides comprehensive veterinary services with a strong focus on individualized and compassionate care. Although a detailed list of all services is not provided, the reviews highlight several key aspects of their offerings:
- General Consultations and Examinations: The practice takes "the time to listen to my concerns" and "answer all of my questions thoroughly," indicating thorough general examinations and consultations for various pet health issues. This is fundamental to a pet hospital.
- Preventive Care and Wellness: While not explicitly stated, the phrase "my baby has unfortunately had a few issues in his first year and a half" suggests ongoing care, likely including routine check-ups, vaccinations, and other preventive measures to maintain pet health. The ability to handle routine procedures like nail clipping for anxious pets points to comprehensive general care.
- Diagnostic and Treatment Services: The fact that the pet had "a few issues" and the owner sought care implies that the hospital provides diagnostic services to identify problems and offers appropriate treatments. A full-service pet hospital would typically offer in-house lab tests, imaging (like X-rays), and prescription medications.
- Behavioral Support and Anxiety Management: A standout service is their exceptional ability to manage nervous and anxious pets. "They talk him through every appointment" and successfully perform procedures like nail clipping on a difficult patient, demonstrating expertise in handling challenging animal behaviors in a veterinary setting. This specialized approach to fearful pets is a significant asset.
- Client Education and Communication: The staff ensures that the "first time dog mom" is fully informed, answering all questions "thoroughly." This commitment to clear communication empowers pet owners to make informed decisions about their pet's health.
The general scope of a Pet Hospital means they would also likely offer a range of additional services such as dentistry, surgical procedures (routine and potentially some advanced), and pain management, all delivered with the same noted professionalism and care.
Somers Veterinary Hospital distinguishes itself through several prominent features:
- Incredibly Friendly and Professional Staff: This is the most consistently praised feature. Reviewers repeatedly emphasize the friendliness, professionalism, and compassion of "everyone in this office," from Dr. Hensen to the support staff. This creates a welcoming and reassuring atmosphere for pet owners and their animals.
- Exceptional Compassion: The staff's genuine compassion is highlighted, particularly in their understanding of both "animals feelings as well as mine" and their dedication to treating pets "like family." This deep empathy is a cornerstone of their service.
- Dr. Hensen's Excellence: Dr. Hensen is specifically lauded as "Wonderful!" and a key figure in the positive experiences. Her expertise and patient-centered approach are clearly highly valued by clients.
- Patient-Centered Approach for Anxious Pets: A unique and significant feature is their ability to effectively manage nervous and anxious animals. The staff's technique of "talking him through every appointment" and successfully performing difficult procedures like nail clipping for a resistant dog showcases their specialized skill and dedication to making the veterinary visit as stress-free as possible.
- Thorough Communication and Client Education: The hospital prides itself on taking "the time to listen to my concerns" and answering "all of my questions thoroughly." This commitment to clear and comprehensive communication ensures that pet owners feel informed and confident in their pet's care.
- Genuine Love for Animals: The phrase "It’s clear they genuinely love what they do" encapsulates the passion and dedication that permeates their service, making the experience more authentic and reassuring for pet owners.
- Support for Human Emotions: The ability to understand and support the "momma and poppa" of a beloved pet, even with a "patient understanding my wife," indicates a holistic approach that acknowledges the emotional bond between humans and their animals, particularly in difficult times like dealing with a pet that was "our family!!!".
The testimonials for Somers Veterinary Hospital serve as compelling promotional material, painting a vivid picture of exceptional veterinary care. The direct quotes such as "I can’t say enough great things about Dr. Hensen and staff!" and "If you’re looking for a vet who treats your pet like family, this is the place to go!” are powerful endorsements that directly address potential new clients' concerns about finding a compassionate and competent veterinary practice.
The detailed accounts of how the staff handles an "anxious dog," including successful nail clipping, provide concrete examples of their specialized skills and patient-centric approach, which would be highly appealing to owners of similarly nervous pets. The gratitude expressed by "Ziggy poppa and momma" for the "amazing Dr. Hensen and complete office" highlights the deep trust and appreciation clients have for the entire team, reinforcing the idea of a supportive and caring environment. The sentiment of "Thank you is never enough" underscores the profound positive impact the hospital has on its clients and their beloved animals.
The consistent themes of friendliness, professionalism, compassion, thorough communication, and expertise in handling challenging pet behaviors are strong selling points. The reviews implicitly promote Somers Veterinary Hospital as a place where pets are not just patients but cherished family members, and their human companions are treated with understanding and respect. This forms the core of their appeal to local users seeking high-quality and empathetic veterinary care in Somers, CT.

Mar 02, 2025 · Adam MorneaultEveryone here has been kind and gentle with my furballs. Dr Hensen is a superb veterinarian.
Jan 22, 2025 · Zach P.I almost took away one star for the waiting that inevitably occurs. But realized it's a doctors office. Humans, animals, you never know who is going to need more time on a given day. My appointments with our adopted labraheeler are never rushed, and always thorough. Just try to get a sitter if you have little ones as my daughter got into EVERYTHING 😞
