Welcome to Van Saun Dog Park

For dog owners across New Jersey, especially those in Bergen County, finding a spacious and well-equipped place where their canine companions can truly express themselves, run freely, and socialize safely is a top priority. The Van Saun Dog Park in River Edge stands as an "awesome" and much-loved destination, offering a dedicated off-leash environment within the expansive and popular Van Saun County Park. This park is a testament to Bergen County's commitment to providing excellent recreational opportunities for both two-legged and four-legged residents.

The importance of a designated dog park cannot be overstated for the well-being of our furry friends. It allows them to expend pent-up energy, practice vital social skills with other canines, and benefit from the mental stimulation that comes with exploring a dynamic environment. For New Jersey residents in and around River Edge, Van Saun Dog Park serves as a go-to spot for daily exercise, fostering a sense of community among local pet parents, and enjoying the great outdoors with their beloved companions.

Location and Accessibility

The Van Saun Dog Park is prominently located within the expansive Van Saun County Park at Unnamed Road, River Edge, NJ 07661, USA. More precisely, Van Saun County Park itself is addressed at 216 Forest Avenue in Paramus, NJ, though the dog park section is situated in the River Edge portion of the sprawling park complex. Its strategic location makes it highly accessible for residents of River Edge, Paramus, and numerous other communities throughout Bergen County.

Being part of a large county park, accessibility to the dog park is excellent. There is typically ample free parking available nearby, ensuring a convenient arrival for visitors. The dog park itself is clearly designated within Van Saun County Park, which is a well-known landmark in the area. The park is also wheelchair accessible, making it inclusive for all members of the community. Visitors can expect to find the dog park within the broader network of walking trails and recreational facilities that characterize Van Saun County Park.

Services Offered

The primary "service" of Van Saun Dog Park is providing a secure, spacious, and well-appointed environment for off-leash dog play. While it doesn't offer commercial services like professional grooming or training classes, its core offerings are invaluable to local dog owners:

  • Fully Fenced Off-Leash Play Areas: The park features fully fenced enclosures where dogs can run, play, and interact freely without the constraint of a leash. This secure environment is paramount for the safety of all canine visitors and the peace of mind of their owners.
  • Separate Areas for Large and Small Dogs: A key and highly appreciated feature is the clear division of the park into two distinct sections: one specifically for small dogs and another for larger dogs. This separation enhances safety and comfort, allowing dogs to play with peers of similar size and energy levels, thereby reducing the risk of accidental injuries.
  • Double-Gated Entrances: For added security and to prevent accidental escapes, both the large and small dog sections are equipped with double-gated entry systems. This safety measure ensures that dogs remain contained while others are entering or exiting the park.
  • Seating Areas: For the comfort of human companions, the park includes dedicated seating areas. These provide convenient spots to sit, relax, and supervise your dog's play, fostering social interaction among owners as well.
  • Poop Bag Stations: To promote cleanliness and responsible pet ownership, the park is equipped with convenient poop bag stations. This amenity encourages users to promptly clean up after their dogs, which is essential for maintaining a hygienic and pleasant environment for everyone.
  • Dog Toys Allowed: Unlike some dog parks with strict "no toy" policies, Van Saun Dog Park allows dog toys. This feature enables owners to engage in active games like fetch with their pups, adding an extra dimension of fun and exercise to their visit.
  • Dog-Friendly Trails Nearby: Being part of Van Saun County Park, the dog park is surrounded by dog-friendly trails. This offers the added benefit of a leisurely leashed stroll before or after off-leash play, allowing for a more comprehensive outdoor experience.

Features / Highlights

What truly makes Van Saun Dog Park a standout destination for New Jersey dog owners?

  • Spacious and Well-Designed Layout: The park is generously sized, providing ample room for dogs to run, sprint, and play. The thoughtful layout with separate areas for different dog sizes is a significant highlight, ensuring appropriate and safe interactions.
  • High Level of Safety Features: The fully fenced design and double-gated entrances demonstrate a strong commitment to canine safety, giving owners peace of mind during their visit.
  • Ample Amenities for Owners and Dogs: The provision of seating areas, poop bag stations, and the allowance of dog toys cater directly to the needs of both pets and their human companions, enhancing the overall park experience.
  • Integration within Van Saun County Park: Being located within such a beloved and expansive county park means visitors can enjoy other attractions, like walking trails, playgrounds, and even the Bergen County Zoo (with separate admission/rules), potentially making a trip to the dog park part of a larger family outing.
  • Welcoming Atmosphere: Reviews often describe the park as having an "awesome" and welcoming atmosphere, suggesting a friendly community of dog owners who frequent the space.
  • Free Entry: A significant highlight for all users is that entry to the dog park is free, making it an accessible recreational option for all Bergen County residents.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a public municipal park facility operated by the Bergen County Department of Parks, the Van Saun Dog Park does not typically offer commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the retail sense. Its primary "offer" is its availability as a free, well-maintained, and accessible public amenity for dog owners in the community. While there are no specific fees required to use the dog park itself, standard dog licensing and vaccination requirements for Bergen County apply.

The "promotion" here is the consistent provision of a high-quality, well-equipped space for canine recreation. Van Saun County Park itself hosts various events throughout the year, such as family reunions (as noted in a review) or seasonal celebrations like "Winter Wonderland" (which has an outdoor ice rink and other attractions). While these aren't direct dog park promotions, they contribute to the park's overall appeal as a community hub. Any specific dog-related events or initiatives (like a local pet fair or a responsible pet ownership workshop) would typically be announced through the Bergen County Parks Department's official channels. The significant value for locals lies in having such a robust and free resource for their dogs' exercise and social needs.

Enjoyed my 2024 Family Reunion @ this park with my family of course and we had a really good time!

We took our dog here for the first time today and he totally enjoyed it! The run is divided for small and large dogs. Both sides are massive and provide ample running for numerous dogs. The park is well shaded by tall trees. Recommendation to add activities for the dogs such as tires or tubes to run or crawl through or over.

Big, wide open dog run that's very clean in so far as dog runs go. Separate gate areas for bigger and smaller dogs. Would be even nicer if it had any obstacle play (e.g. tunnel, or stump to climb, etc.)

Great addition to the Park which makes Dog lovers share stories & meet new friends, just like the dogs themselves. Big open space separated into small & Large dogs. Always have your dog on a leash, it's the Law. Bags available for pick-up. No excuses, provided by the staff who work hard, but can be shady most of the year and not just the summer.
