Welcome to The Barking Lot Dog Park
Hello, Memphis dog owners! Are you looking for a convenient spot in the heart of the city where your furry friend can stretch their legs and enjoy some off-leash playtime? The Barking Lot Dog Park, located right here in Downtown Memphis, offers a fenced area for just that. We understand that finding accessible and dedicated spaces for your beloved pets to exercise and socialize is a key part of city living, and The Barking Lot aims to provide a functional space for urban pups. While it's an urban dog park with its unique characteristics, it serves as a central option for those living or working in the downtown area.
The Barking Lot Dog Park is designed as a small, urban off-leash area, providing a quick and easy solution for dog owners in a bustling city environment. It is a no-membership-required park, allowing anyone to bring their dog for a run and play. This public access is a notable feature for the Downtown Memphis community. As with any urban green space, especially one dedicated to dogs, The Barking Lot has its unique set of challenges and benefits. It provides a crucial patch of green amidst the city's concrete, offering a place for dogs to burn off some energy and interact with other canines. The Downtown Memphis Commission manages this park, indicating its role as part of the city's commitment to providing recreational opportunities for its residents and their pets. While there have been mixed reviews regarding its upkeep, the fundamental purpose of providing a fenced, off-leash area remains.
The Barking Lot Dog Park is strategically located in Downtown Memphis, Tennessee, making it a very accessible option for city dwellers and those passing through the area. You can find it at 75 Jefferson Ave, Memphis, TN 38103, USA. This address places it conveniently near major downtown attractions and thoroughfares, including its proximity "off of I-40" as noted by a reviewer. Its central location makes it an easy stop for a quick potty break or a brief play session if you're out and about in the city. The park is often described as being at the corner of Main Street and Jefferson Avenue. As a public park managed by the Downtown Memphis Commission, it generally has free entry. While parking is not explicitly detailed as abundant within the immediate dog park area, street parking or nearby public parking garages would likely be available given its downtown location. The park is typically open from sunrise to sunset, providing a good window for visits throughout the day. It's always advisable to be mindful of city traffic and parking regulations when visiting a downtown location.
Based on available public information and user feedback, The Barking Lot Dog Park offers the following services and amenities for dogs and their owners:
- Fenced Off-Leash Area: The primary service of The Barking Lot is providing a designated, fenced-in space where dogs can run and play off-leash. This security is essential for owners to let their dogs enjoy freedom safely.
- Benches for Seating: The park is equipped with benches, offering a place for dog owners to sit and relax while supervising their pets.
- Doggie Waste Stations: To promote cleanliness and responsible pet ownership, the park includes doggie waste stations, typically providing bags for cleanup and disposal bins. This amenity is crucial for maintaining a sanitary environment.
- Water Fountain: Information suggests the park has a water fountain for both dogs and their owners, which is a valuable feature for hydration, especially during warmer weather. However, some reviews indicate uncertainty or issues with water availability, so it is advisable to bring your own water as a backup.
It is important for visitors to be aware of certain user-reported issues, such as "a hole under gates all size dogs can escape," and general concerns about cleanliness ("dirty, smelly, muddy, grungy") and owners not picking up after their dogs. These points highlight the need for personal vigilance and active participation in keeping the park clean.
The Barking Lot Dog Park, while a modest urban space, offers specific features and highlights that are relevant for dog owners in Downtown Memphis.
- Fenced, Off-Leash Environment: The core highlight is its fully fenced, off-leash area. This provides a critical safe zone for dogs to play and socialize without the constraint of a leash, which is a primary need for dog parks.
- Central Downtown Location: Its placement at 75 Jefferson Ave makes it highly convenient for those living or working in the downtown core. For a dense urban area, having any dedicated off-leash space is a significant amenity. It's an "excellent spot for a pup potty break" or "quick exercise and fun" during city outings.
- Public Access: The park does not require a membership, making it accessible to any dog owner who visits, fostering an inclusive community space.
- Benches for Relaxation: The availability of benches allows owners to sit and oversee their dogs, contributing to a more relaxed visit.
- Waste Management Provisions: The presence of doggie waste stations helps responsible owners maintain cleanliness, even if some users report issues with others' compliance.
- Potential for Water: While inconsistent according to reviews, the stated presence of a water fountain (for both dogs and humans) can be a welcome feature on days it is fully operational.
It is crucial to acknowledge recurring concerns raised in user reviews, including "a hole under gates all size dogs can escape," and descriptions of the park as "dirty, smelly, muddy, grungy" due to pet parents not picking up after their dogs. Some users also noted concerns about "glass scattered around the park." These points highlight areas where vigilance from visitors and ongoing maintenance efforts are particularly important.
As a public dog park managed by the Downtown Memphis Commission, The Barking Lot Dog Park typically does not offer formal, commercial promotions or special discounts. Its primary "promotion" is its free accessibility to all residents and visitors of Memphis, providing a valuable public service without any admission fees.
The park's open hours from sunrise to sunset offer consistent availability for visits throughout the day, which serves as an ongoing benefit to the community. While the park itself doesn't host sales events, Downtown Memphis, as a vibrant urban area, often has various pet-friendly events, festivals, or community gatherings that might be held nearby. These broader city events, though not direct "promotions" from The Barking Lot, can add to the overall appeal of visiting the downtown area with your dog. For example, some information mentions a "dedicated space for local food trucks" at the park, which could enhance the visitor experience if active. To stay informed about any such intermittent community activities or city-wide pet-related initiatives, it is advisable to regularly check the official Downtown Memphis Commission website, local community calendars, or relevant social media channels for updates on events that might complement a visit to The Barking Lot.

May 29, 2025 · Damaris LatorreDirty, smelly, muddy, grungy. Few words to describe that dog park. I will NOT take my dog there again. Pet parents don't pick-up after their dogs, it smells bad. It's off of I-40, but if you can wait until 51 Dog park in Nashville is a lot cleaner and safer environment.
May 06, 2023 · JosieClean today and grass cut 7/6. It would be even better if some pet parents would clean up after their furbabies...i don't understand why they won't since poop bags are provided for free...just lazy and don't care
Oct 26, 2021 · She IsVery very small. Lots of dog waste from previous visitors. But right of the highway and good enough for a quick dog friendly put stop.
May 26, 2017 · Johann KlemmackThe smallest dog park I've ever seen. But it was very near the highway and a good place for our dog to stretch his legs along highway 40😊
