Great place for dogs with so much energy that needs to be drained. Especially if you don't have a lot of time during the day. Have two areas one for under 25 and one for over. Has a trail you can walk around also just make sure the least is at least 6in.

In the following sections, we will delve into the specifics that make Southern Community Dog Park a standout choice for dog owners in Chapel Hill, providing factual details and a friendly, professional tone that aims to inform and engage local users.
The Southern Community Dog Park is conveniently located at 1000 Dogwood Acres Dr, Chapel Hill, NC 27516, USA. This address places it within the expansive Southern Community Park, a 72-acre municipal park managed by the Town of Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department. Its location in the southern part of Chapel Hill makes it easily accessible for residents of the town and surrounding communities.
Access to the dog park is straightforward. Visitors should "park in the lot and walk up path towards the left" as indicated by a reviewer. There are paved parking lots available at Southern Community Park. While parking along Dogwood Acres Drive itself is not permitted, the dedicated park lots provide ample space. The dog park features "dual gate entrances" to ensure safe entry and exit for dogs.
Being part of a larger park complex, the dog park benefits from the overall infrastructure of Southern Community Park, which includes well-maintained pathways and clear navigation. The park is generally open from dawn until dusk, aligning with typical public park hours, unless specific maintenance is scheduled (e.g., it is closed the second Wednesday of each month from 7:00 AM to noon for monthly maintenance, as well as every Thursday from 12pm-4pm from March-November for mowing). Its convenient location and clear access points contribute significantly to its popularity among local dog owners in Chapel Hill.
Two Fenced-in Off-Leash Areas: The park features two distinct fenced areas, providing separate spaces for different dog sizes and temperaments. One area is specifically designated "for under 25" (pounds) or "smaller or less confident/socialized dogs, puppies," while the other is "for over" (25 pounds) or "dogs who love company and interaction." This separation is crucial for ensuring safe and comfortable play for all canines.
Water Bowls/Access: Users consistently mention the availability of "water bowls" and water access, which is essential for keeping dogs hydrated during play, especially during warmer weather.
Pet Waste Bags and Disposal: The park provides "Poo bags are usually available, provided by the park (please pick up after your dog)," encouraging responsible cleanup and maintaining cleanliness.
Seating for Humans: Both dog park sections offer "seating for humans," allowing owners to relax and supervise their dogs comfortably.
Direct Access to Walking Trails: A significant service highlight is the "trail you can walk around also," with "immediate access to walking trails going off into the woods." This provides a fantastic opportunity for on-leash walks before or after off-leash play (note: leash must be at least 6 feet on trails outside the dog park).
Regular Maintenance: As a Town of Chapel Hill facility, the park undergoes routine maintenance to ensure a clean and safe environment for all visitors, though users note it "May be muddy after rain."
Spacious 2-Acre Layout: The dog park spans approximately 2 acres, providing ample room for dogs to run, fetch, and play freely without feeling cramped. This large space is a major draw for high-energy dogs.
Two Distinct Fenced Zones: The clear separation into large and small dog areas is a key highlight, catering to the safety and comfort of all dogs, from tiny puppies to boisterous large breeds. This allows for more appropriate play interactions.
Dual Gate Entrances: The inclusion of "dual gate entrances" enhances safety by providing a secure transition area where owners can leash and unleash their dogs without risk of escape.
Hydration Support: The provision of water bowls and presumed water sources within the fenced areas is invaluable, ensuring dogs can stay hydrated during extended play sessions.
Integrated with Southern Community Park: The dog park is a part of the larger Southern Community Park, which features "trails, 2 picnic shelters, play area, meadow area, all season restrooms, basketball courts, disc golf course and multiple soccer fields." This allows for a comprehensive recreational outing for the entire family.
Shade and Sun Balance: The 2-acre dog park is "split 50/50 shaded and sunny," offering options for dogs and owners to choose between sunbathing and seeking shade, enhancing comfort throughout the day.
Vibrant Social Scene: The park is described as having a "Busier side for dogs who love company and interaction," indicating a lively atmosphere and opportunities for dogs to socialize and make "regular friends."
As a public amenity managed by the Town of Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department, Southern Community Dog Park does not offer commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the traditional business sense, such as discounts or loyalty programs. Access to the dog park is generally free and open to the public during designated park hours.
However, the value offered by Southern Community Dog Park comes in the form of its excellent amenities and consistent maintenance, provided as a public service. The Town of Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department may occasionally host community events, educational programs related to pet ownership, or park clean-up days within its parks system. These initiatives, while not direct promotions, add value to the park experience and engage the local community.
Interested individuals can check the official Town of Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation website for announcements regarding any upcoming pet-related events or general park news, including potential maintenance closures that might temporarily affect access (e.g., "closed every Thursday 12pm-4pm (Mowing Season)" or "closed the second Wednesday of each Month 10am-2pm").
It's important for users to note that while the park provides poop bags, responsible pet ownership is paramount, and owners are expected to "please pick up after your dog." There are no permit requirements or fees to use this specific dog park, unlike some other municipal dog parks in the Triangle area.

Dec 29, 2020 · Sara RineyThe Dogwood Disc Golf course is great. It's mostly wooded technical shots though. So if you're looking for more of a mix, this probably isn't the course for you. There is some pretty decent signage, but some of the trails between tee pads could use more work. Gets a bit thick in the spring and summer.
May 17, 2021 · Shanah BellMy favorite dog park in the Triangle. One drawback. Soccer parents will take all the reserved dog park spaces on Saturdays. It's infuriating. The city has little interest in addressing the problem. The soccer folks have a huge parking lot of their own. I wish they would use it.
Apr 15, 2022 · Tyler CurtainVery busy and not a large amount of parking, but very large dog park with both large and small dog areas. Lots of trash cans and doggie bags and water for the pups
