My first and last experience at this dog park. After 30 minutes there I had to pick 24 stickers off her. Against my better judgment, I did go back because a friend wanted to check it out. This time we found this sign on the fence, CSUMB residence only. We Live 10 miles away and are Monterey County residence, but not CSUMB residence. I called the number and was told no entrance residence only.

Welcome to Schoonover Dog Park
Hello, California dog enthusiasts! Are you and your furry companion looking for a dedicated space to run, play, and socialize in the Marina area? Schoonover Dog Park is a key amenity designed to offer a safe and engaging environment for dogs to enjoy off-leash freedom. While some aspects of its access and terrain might be unique, it offers valuable features for the local canine community. We know how important it is to find the right spot for your dog’s exercise and social needs, and this guide aims to provide you with a comprehensive overview of what to expect at Schoonover Dog Park.
Introduction / Overview
Schoonover Dog Park in Marina, California, is an established off-leash dog park that has served the local community for many years. It's designed to be a vibrant hub where dogs can burn energy, practice their recall, and interact with other dogs in a secure setting. As with any community space, user experiences can vary, but for those who frequent it, it's considered "a great place to have fun with other dogs and socialize with their owners." The park is known for its fully fenced perimeter, providing a safe enclosure for dogs to roam freely. It is situated in a community with beautiful coastal scenery, adding to the overall pleasantness of a visit for dog owners who appreciate the outdoors. While its primary purpose is to offer an exercise and recreation space for dogs, specific regulations regarding its use are in place to ensure a harmonious environment for all.
Location and Accessibility
Schoonover Dog Park is located at Schoonover / White, Marina, CA 93933, USA. This address places it within the Marina area of Monterey County. One crucial aspect of this dog park's accessibility, as noted by some users, is its connection to the California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) housing. There have been instances where signs indicating "CSUMB residence only" have been observed, and inquiries to a contact number have confirmed this restriction for some visitors. Official information from related sources, such as Schoonover Park Apartments (a residential community for CSUMB faculty, staff, and education partners), also states that amenities including the dog park are "Available to Faculty, Staff and Ed Partners of CSUMB only."
However, other public listings and general descriptions suggest it as a public dog park in Marina. This discrepancy indicates that while the dog park is physically present and utilized, its public accessibility may be specifically limited to CSUMB residents and affiliates, or at least subject to changing rules or specific interpretations.
For those who are authorized to use the park, there is generally free parking nearby, making visits convenient. The park features a double-gated entrance for added security, ensuring dogs remain safely within the enclosure upon entry and exit. Its location within a vibrant community near the coast makes it an appealing spot for authorized users.
Services Offered
Schoonover Dog Park offers a range of services and amenities designed to create a comprehensive off-leash experience for dogs and their owners:
Fenced Off-Leash Areas: The park is fully fenced, providing a secure environment for dogs to play without a leash.
Separated Areas for Big and Small Dogs: To ensure safe and appropriate play, the park features distinct areas for smaller dogs (typically 30 pounds or less) and larger dogs (over 30 pounds).
Water Fountain: A water fountain is available to help keep dogs hydrated, a crucial amenity, especially during warm California days.
Complimentary Poop Bags: To promote cleanliness and responsible pet ownership, complimentary poop bags are provided.
Designated for Dog Play: The sole purpose of the park is for "exercise and recreation by dogs that are under the control of an adult," ensuring a focused environment.
Features / Highlights
Schoonover Dog Park offers several features that enhance its appeal as a dog-friendly destination:
Obstacles for Play and Agility: The park includes "obstacles for play and agility training," providing mental and physical stimulation for dogs beyond just running.
Plenty of Seating: There is "plenty of seating for dog owners to relax" while supervising their pets, including benches and tables.
Double-Gated Entrance: This security feature helps prevent accidental escapes and ensures safer entry and exit from the off-leash areas.
Allows Dog Toys: Visitors are welcome to bring their dog's favorite toys for fetch and interactive play, adding to the fun.
Long-Standing Community Presence: The park has been a local fixture for over 20 years, indicating its consistent value to a segment of the community.
It's important for potential visitors to be aware of a reported feature:
Sticker Concerns: One review mentioned encountering numerous "stickers" (likely burrs or similar plant matter) on dogs, suggesting that the ground cover in some areas may contain vegetation that can cling to fur. This is a practical consideration for owners of dogs with long coats.
Promotions or Special Offers
As a facility primarily associated with CSUMB housing or a municipal park, Schoonover Dog Park does not typically offer commercial promotions or special discounts. Its primary "offer" is the provision of a free and accessible (for authorized users) space for dogs. Any special events or "promotions" would likely be community-driven initiatives. For example, the CSUMB residential community, which the park is part of, might host pet-friendly gatherings, vaccination clinics, or other events for its residents. Similarly, the City of Marina's Parks and Recreation Department might occasionally organize or endorse pet-related events within their city parks. To inquire about any such community events or special programming related to pets in Marina or at Schoonover Park, it would be advisable to check the official CSUMB housing website, the City of Marina's official website, or local community calendars. These resources are the best way to stay informed about activities that could enhance your experience at the park.
Contact Information
Given the mixed information regarding public access, the best point of contact for definitive rules and access policies for Schoonover Dog Park is likely through the management of the Schoonover Park residential community or the City of Marina's relevant department.
Address:
Schoonover / White, Marina, CA 93933, USA
For inquiries specific to the Schoonover Park residential community and its amenities, including the dog park, you might be able to find contact information on their official website. For general inquiries related to city parks in Marina, the City of Marina's Parks and Recreation Department would be the appropriate contact.
Based on available information, a general contact number associated with Schoonover Park (residential community) is (888) 724-6804. This number is typically for leasing inquiries for the residential units, but they may be able to direct questions about dog park access.
For official rules and regulations pertaining to dog parks within the City of Marina, the Marina Municipal Code, specifically Title 12, Chapter 12.13 ("Dog Park Rules and Regulations"), outlines the rules applicable to any dog park in the city, including requirements for licensing, vaccination, leashing when entering/exiting, and aggressive behavior. These rules apply to all users of city dog parks.
Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
For California locals, particularly those who are CSUMB residents or affiliates in Marina, Schoonover Dog Park offers a highly suitable and comprehensive solution for their canine companions' needs. Its standout features include fully fenced, dedicated off-leash areas with crucial separation for small and large dogs, promoting safe and enjoyable play for all sizes. The presence of a water fountain, complimentary poop bags, and ample seating demonstrates a commitment to owner convenience and park hygiene. The inclusion of agility obstacles provides mental and physical stimulation, going beyond a simple open field. While the issue of "stickers" in the terrain is a practical consideration for owners of certain breeds, it's often manageable with proper grooming post-play. The community aspect, with many long-term users, highlights its role as a social hub for dogs and their owners. The primary caveat for suitability lies in the apparent residence-only access for CSUMB affiliates, which means it may not be a public option for all Monterey County residents. However, for those who do have access, Schoonover Dog Park provides a well-equipped, secure, and engaging environment that is ideal for daily exercise, socialization, and strengthening the bond between dogs and their human companions in Marina, CA.

Sep 21, 2024 · Old VeteranI've been taking my dogs to this dog park for over 20 years now. It's a great place to have fun with other dogs and socialize with their owners.
Jun 09, 2025 · PitoDaddyMy dogs love the sand here! I did get stung by a bumblebee over in the corner by the bleachers. I haven’t been to this park for a few years so I was delighted to see a water spigot had been installed. Nice people nice dogs. This is a lovely dog park.
May 13, 2024 · Becky DeSmetOne of the best dog parks in the Salinas region. Small dedicated parking lot. Obstacle course, separate area for small dogs with seating and water bowls, gates are easy to navigate, tools for picking up after your pets, plus some kind folks have left toys for anyone to use. Some of the nicest people I've ever met at this park, so much so that I'll drive 30 mins each direction to get here, passing other local parks that have little infrastructure and few friendly faces to come to Schoonover with my Frenchie Taco.
Jun 13, 2023 · Jen DavidsonSo I was googling dog parks near me so I can take my dog to a dog park and this came up whats sad is that it's for residents only and csumb users only. why even have it on Google if it's just for residents and csumb residents only.....
