Nice view of the pond, stocked poo bags the last 4 times I’ve been here (still ALOT of poo on the ground though, so it doesn’t seem to matter if the bags are stocked; people still don’t pick up after their dogs). There was a city maintenance guy here cutting the grass, trimming and emptying the trash this morning, but no trimming was done inside the dog park. It’s a smaller park but helpful if you have a dog that doesn’t have great recall, not very busy. My dogs like to run around the big mounds of mulch as an obstacle course and they have a nice cover of mulch, so no more mud or dirt on the dogs, just watch out for the poop! Public restrooms are across the street by the El Estero Park Center.

Services Offered

El Estero Lake Dog Park provides essential amenities designed to facilitate a comfortable and enjoyable off-leash experience for dogs and their owners:

  • Off-Leash Play Areas: The park's primary service is its designated, fenced-in areas where dogs can run and play freely without leashes.
  • Separate Areas for Small and Large Dogs: To ensure safer and more comfortable interactions, the park features distinct sections for smaller dogs and larger dogs. This separation allows dogs to play with peers of similar size and energy levels.
  • Dog Drinking Water: A water station is available within the park to help keep canine visitors hydrated, though owners should note that they may need to bring their own bowl or container.
  • Waste Bag Stations: The park often has stocked poop bag dispensers, promoting responsible pet ownership and encouraging visitors to clean up after their dogs. This is a crucial amenity for maintaining a clean environment.
  • Seating for Owners: Benches, chairs, and tables are available within the park, allowing owners to relax and supervise their dogs in comfort.
  • Public Restrooms Nearby: While not inside the dog park itself, public restrooms are conveniently located across the street by the El Estero Park Center, providing a valuable facility for human visitors.
  • Mulched Ground Cover: The park utilizes a covering of mulch, which helps to mitigate mud and dirt, offering a cleaner surface for dogs to run on compared to bare earth.
Features / Highlights

El Estero Lake Dog Park is appreciated by its users for several key features that enhance the dog park experience:

  • Scenic Views: A standout feature is the pleasant view of El Estero Lake, which adds to the tranquil and enjoyable atmosphere of the park. This natural backdrop provides a more aesthetically pleasing environment than many urban dog parks.
  • Fenced and Secure: The park is fully fenced, providing a secure environment for off-leash play. This gives dog owners peace of mind, knowing their pets are contained within a safe perimeter.
  • Man-Made Obstacles: The presence of "big mounds of mulch" creates natural obstacles that dogs enjoy using as an "obstacle course," adding an element of fun and varied terrain to their play.
  • Less Crowded: Reviews suggest the park is "not very busy," making it ideal for dogs that might not thrive in highly crowded environments or for owners seeking a more peaceful experience. This also makes it suitable for dogs that "don't have great recall," offering a more controlled setting.
  • City Maintenance Presence: The park benefits from regular city maintenance, including grass cutting, trimming, and trash emptying, ensuring the general upkeep of the larger park complex, even if the dog park interior occasionally needs more specific attention regarding leaves and weeds.
  • Shaded Areas: The presence of trees provides welcome shade, which is particularly beneficial during sunny California days, offering relief for both dogs and their owners.
  • Proximity to Other Amenities: Being part of the El Estero Park Complex means easy access to other recreational facilities, including paddle boating on the lake, picnic areas, and the famous Dennis the Menace Playground, making it a versatile destination for families.

While the park offers many positives, some user feedback points to challenges with dog waste not being picked up by all visitors, despite bags being provided. Occasional issues with overgrown weeds and scattered trash along the sides have also been noted, indicating areas where more consistent maintenance within the dog park perimeter could improve the experience.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a public facility operated by the City of Monterey Parks and Recreation Department, El Estero Lake Dog Park does not typically offer commercial promotions or special discounts. Its primary benefit is providing a free and accessible recreational space for the community's dogs.

However, the City of Monterey Parks and Recreation, or local animal welfare organizations, may occasionally host community events or responsible pet ownership campaigns within the broader El Estero Park Complex or at other city parks. These events, while not direct "promotions" for the dog park itself, often serve to enhance the overall dog-friendly environment in Monterey. Californians interested in such community engagement opportunities should consult the City of Monterey's official website for their Parks and Recreation department or local community calendars for announcements regarding pet-related events or public workshops.

This place probably needs a little help here. Lots of leaves and overgrown weeds on the ground and fences. Trash is also everywhere on the sides where dogs can eat em... At least its in the shade...? But then again its next to a mausoleum that doesn't allow you to bounce balls off the backside...

Going to this dog park in Monterey I'm thinking about all the revenue that Monterey generates from parking, hotel tax, property tax, and tourism. And this is the best they can do? Residents here are being robbed by local government. If something can't be monetized for Monterey city, then let it go to h.

Beware when you bring your dog here. I brought my dog home after coming here and she had ticks on her. I'm pretty sure it was from this park. My advice is to check your dog after you leave. 3 Stars, not because of ticks but because of the park itself. It doesn't have a lot of amenities like a drinking fountain for dogs. The pens are not too big and the big dog pen is covered in vegetation. At least seating benches are present.
