A short walk uphill from the free parking lot, to the right of the bike paths is a fenced off area with a nice view of the scenery. There were many dog owners who preferred the trails behind the dog park instead of the sectioned off zone. My dog had a blast having this park mostly to ourselves jumping off piles of dirt. The walk is very steep to the flat areas, but pet owners will certainly get a small trek out of it.

Welcome to Red Rocks Dog Park
For dog owners in Colorado Springs who cherish outdoor adventures with their furry companions, Red Rock Canyon Dog Park offers a truly unique and expansive experience. Unlike traditional flat, fenced dog parks, this special area within the vast Red Rock Canyon Open Space provides a natural, dynamic landscape for dogs to explore off-leash. It's a place where the stunning Colorado scenery becomes an integral part of your dog's playtime, offering both physical exercise and sensory enrichment. This article will guide you through the highlights of Red Rock Canyon Dog Park, explaining why it's a must-visit for local dog lovers seeking more than just a typical dog park outing.
Red Rock Canyon Dog Park is not a conventional, small, fenced enclosure. Instead, it's a designated off-leash area within the magnificent 785-acre Red Rock Canyon Open Space. This expansive nature park features two specific "dog loop" trails where dogs are permitted to be off-leash: a lower loop approximately half a mile long and an upper loop around one mile. While the broader open space has numerous trails where dogs must be leashed, these designated loops offer the freedom for dogs to run and explore. The terrain is varied, with dirt paths, some grassy areas, and even piles of dirt for dogs to jump on and off, creating a natural agility course. Visitors often comment on the beautiful views of the unique red rock formations that define the canyon, providing a picturesque backdrop for your dog's adventures. This park is ideal for dogs that thrive in more natural, open environments and for owners who enjoy hiking alongside their unleashed companions. The emphasis here is on embracing the rugged beauty of Colorado while allowing dogs to experience freedom and extensive exercise.
Red Rock Canyon Dog Park is located at 3615 W High St, Colorado Springs, CO 80904, USA. This address places it on the western side of Colorado Springs, nestled between Garden of the Gods and Manitou Springs. Its proximity to these iconic natural landmarks makes it a convenient and scenic destination for residents across the city.
The dog park and the broader Red Rock Canyon Open Space are generally open from 5 AM to 9 PM year-round. Some sources indicate extended hours until 10 PM or 11 PM during the summer months (May 1 to October 31), so it's always recommended to check the official City of Colorado Springs Parks and Recreation website for the most current information. Free parking is available in multiple lots within the Red Rock Canyon Open Space. The specific off-leash dog loops are accessed via a short uphill walk from the main parking lot, typically to the right of the bike paths. While the trails within the dog park offer stunning views, some areas have steep inclines and loose gravel, which might be challenging for individuals with mobility issues. It's important to be aware of the terrain and wear appropriate footwear. Despite these considerations, the park's accessibility via main roads and its generous operating hours make it a popular and convenient choice for many Colorado Springs dog owners.
Red Rock Canyon Dog Park, as part of the larger open space, provides essential services focused on facilitating a natural and responsible off-leash experience.
- Designated Off-Leash Trail Loops: The core service is the provision of two specific trail loops (a lower and an upper loop) where dogs are permitted to be off-leash. This allows for extensive running and exploration in a natural setting.
- Waste Bag Dispensers: Multiple dog poop dispensing bags are available across the trails, encouraging owners to clean up after their pets and maintain the park's natural beauty and cleanliness.
- Portable Toilets: Portable toilets are typically available at both main parking lots within the Red Rock Canyon Open Space, providing convenient facilities for human visitors.
- Scenic Views: While not a "service" in the traditional sense, the breathtaking views of the unique red rock formations are a major part of the park's offering, enhancing the overall experience for visitors.
- Hiking Opportunities: For owners, the park offers excellent opportunities for hiking alongside their off-leash dogs on the designated trails, combining dog exercise with personal outdoor activity.
Red Rock Canyon Dog Park boasts several unique features that distinguish it from other dog parks and make it a highly desirable destination for Colorado dog owners.
- Natural and Expansive Terrain: Unlike traditional fenced areas, this park offers a vast, natural landscape with varied terrain including dirt paths, grassy areas, and "piles of dirt" for dogs to jump off, providing a more stimulating and adventurous environment.
- Stunning Red Rock Views: The park provides unparalleled views of the dramatic red rock formations characteristic of the Colorado Springs area. This scenic beauty enhances every visit, making it a picturesque place for dog and owner alike.
- Off-Leash Trail System: The concept of designated off-leash trail loops (Lower Dog Loop and Upper Dog Loop) within a larger open space is a significant highlight, allowing dogs to run and explore more freely than in a confined fence.
- Less Crowded Feel: Due to its expansive nature and the presence of numerous trails in the broader open space, the designated dog park area often feels less crowded, even on busy days, allowing for a more peaceful experience.
- Physical Challenge for Owners & Dogs: The "steep areas with loose gravel" on the trails offer a good workout for both dogs and their human companions, making it ideal for active individuals and high-energy dogs.
- Free Parking: Ample, free parking is available, making the park easily accessible without additional costs.
As a public open space managed by the City of Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Department, Red Rock Canyon Dog Park operates as a free and open-access facility. Therefore, it does not offer commercial promotions, discounts, or special offers in the traditional business sense. There are no entrance fees, membership requirements, or specific deals associated with using the dog park or the broader open space.
The inherent "promotion" of Red Rock Canyon Dog Park lies in its consistent availability as a unique, well-maintained, and scenic public space for dog owners. Any community events or pet-related activities that might occasionally take place within the Red Rock Canyon Open Space would be organized by the City of Colorado Springs or local community groups, and these would be publicly announced through official city channels or local event listings. For everyday use, the park remains a reliable and cost-free option for locals to provide their dogs with extensive exercise and enjoyment in a stunning natural setting.

Dec 01, 2024 · Sarah MichelleGreat off leash park with short trails within the gated area. Keep in mind the trails have steep areas with loose gravel so if you have mobility issues it may be difficult to walk around. There are also some cactus in the grassy areas so keep an eye on your dogs!
Mar 16, 2025 · Kianna CoyA great place for your dog to run and for you to enjoy the 360° view of the mountains of the Rockies! The Lower Loop Dog Park is located up the hill from the parking lot. It can be found by using the map at the entrance to the walkway. It is fully fenced in, has 3 entrances, 2 trash cans, and lots of space to roam! This is a perfect place to take photos of breath taking sights! This park requires you to be able to climb up steep slopes and hills, inside and outside the dog park, so come prepared and bring water! The people and the dogs are all friendly and are here for adventure! Overall, a nice, quiet, gorgeous place to walk with your pup!
Oct 02, 2022 · Kerri ClemmonsShort hike up from parking to fenced dog park, huge space, high desert so watch out for small cactus plants. Great place. Views of pikes peak and garden of the gods.
Apr 11, 2025 · Amanda SauerI absolutely love this place. I've been taking my dog here like twice a week for two years now. Gorgeous park, with a fantastic creek, that makes for a great casual walk.
