This dedicated off-leash area offers a comfortable and enjoyable experience for dogs of various temperaments and their human companions.

Olson Dog Park is more than just a patch of grass; it’s a thoughtfully designed and well-maintained area that caters to the needs of the local dog community. Visitors frequently praise its welcoming atmosphere, its general cleanliness, and the unique addition of a pleasant walking trail around a pond. Whether your dog thrives on intense play with other pups or prefers a more serene walk and sniff experience, Olson Dog Park provides the setting for both.

The park's appeal is highlighted by testimonials from real customers who describe it as an "excellent dog park" where there are "almost always people there on the days it’s warm," indicating a vibrant and active community. Even during quieter times, its "decently sized" layout makes it "a great spot for a play date," allowing for focused fetch sessions and plenty of room for dogs to get "very tired" without distractions. Olson Dog Park embodies Ann Arbor’s commitment to providing quality green spaces for all its residents, including the four-legged ones.

Location and Accessibility

Olson Dog Park is conveniently located at 1551 Dhu Varren Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48105, USA. This address places it in the northeast corner of Ann Arbor, making it easily accessible for residents across the city and surrounding areas in Washtenaw County. The dog park itself is situated in the south-central portion of the larger Olson Park, a significant 54-acre park that is jointly owned by the City of Ann Arbor and the Washtenaw County Water Resources Commissioner.

Access to Olson Dog Park, like other city-designated off-leash areas in Ann Arbor, requires a valid dog park permit. This permit system helps ensure that all dogs using the facility are licensed, vaccinated, and contribute to maintaining a safe and healthy environment. Permits can be obtained through the Ann Arbor City Clerk's Office. As of recent information, annual permits are priced with discounts for spayed or neutered dogs, and additional dogs. It's always advisable to confirm the current fees and application process directly with the City Clerk's office.

The park operates during typical city park hours, generally from 6 a.m. to midnight, though off-leash areas usually adhere to a "dawn to dusk" or 6 AM to 10 PM timeframe to comply with specific dog park rules. Ample parking is available near the dog park entrance, ensuring a hassle-free arrival. The paved pedestrian pathway that loops around the park's central pond also offers a pleasant approach to the dog play area.

Services Offered

Olson Dog Park offers a range of services and amenities designed to enhance the experience for both dogs and their human companions within its off-leash area:

  • Fenced Off-Leash Area: The park features a fully fenced enclosure where dogs can safely run and play without a leash. While some sources suggest it does not have separate areas for big and small dogs, others indicate a smaller area might exist for little dogs, offering a more comfortable space for all sizes, but this should be verified upon visit.
  • Water Fountains and Access: To keep dogs hydrated, the park provides water fountains within the dog play area. This is a crucial amenity, especially during warmer Michigan days.
  • Shaded Seating for Owners: For the comfort of human visitors, Olson Dog Park includes shaded seating areas, such as benches and picnic tables, allowing owners to relax while supervising their pets.
  • Waste Stations: Conveniently located throughout the park are waste stations equipped with bags and disposal bins, promoting responsible pet waste cleanup and contributing to the park's overall cleanliness.
  • Pond Trail Access: A unique feature of Olson Park is a short, nice hike around a pond that dogs can enjoy, offering a change of scenery and additional exercise within the broader park grounds (dogs must be leashed in areas outside the designated off-leash dog park).
  • Double-Gated Entrance: For enhanced security and to prevent accidental escapes, the dog park utilizes a double-gated entry system.
  • Dog-Friendly Trails: Beyond the off-leash area, the larger Olson Park features dog-friendly trails (where dogs must be leashed), offering further opportunities for walks and exploration.

Features / Highlights

Olson Dog Park distinguishes itself with several key features and highlights that make it a favored spot among Michigan dog owners:

  • Excellent Socialization Opportunities: The park is "almost always people there on the days it’s warm," creating a vibrant social environment for dogs to interact and for owners to connect with fellow dog lovers.
  • Decently Sized Play Area: While some sources indicate it's on the smaller side (approximately 1 acre for the off-leash area, compared to larger parks like Swift Run), its "decently sized" nature is perfect for focused playdates and ensures dogs can still get ample exercise without feeling overwhelmed by vastness.
  • Scenic Pond Loop: The option to take a "short and nice" hike around the park's pond (outside the off-leash area, on leash) adds a unique natural element to the visit, distinguishing it from many other urban dog parks.
  • Shaded Resting Areas: The availability of shaded seating is a welcome feature for owners, offering respite from the sun while their dogs play.
  • Well-Maintained Environment: Reviewers consistently suggest that the park is well-maintained, indicating a clean and pleasant atmosphere for both dogs and their owners.
  • Great for Playdates: Its ability to be "empty" at certain times makes it an "excellent spot for a play date," allowing for uninterrupted fetch games and focused interaction without distractions.
  • Ann Arbor City Management: Being part of the City of Ann Arbor's park system ensures professional oversight, consistent maintenance schedules, and adherence to established regulations, contributing to a reliable experience.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a public park operated by the City of Ann Arbor, Olson Dog Park does not typically offer commercial "promotions" in the traditional sense. Its value comes from being a well-managed municipal facility. However, there are aspects that can be considered advantageous offers for local users:

  • Annual Permit Value: The required annual dog park permit, while a fee, provides consistent and unlimited access to Olson Dog Park (and typically other Ann Arbor city-designated dog parks like Swift Run Dog Park and Broadway Park). This offers excellent value for frequent visitors. The permit fees are also structured with a discount for spayed/neutered dogs and for additional dogs from the same household, making it more affordable for multi-dog families.
  • Community Events: The City of Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation department, along with organizations like GIVE 365, often hosts special dog-related events that sometimes rotate between Olson Park and Swift Run Dog Park. Examples from the past include "Yappy Hours" and seasonal parties like "Howl-O-Ween Party" or "Bow Wow Luau." These events feature activities, photo booths, and sometimes even treats, providing added value and fostering community engagement.
  • Educational Programs: Occasionally, the city or local pet organizations might offer educational programs or workshops related to dog behavior or responsible pet ownership at or near the park, accessible to permit holders.

Local dog owners are encouraged to regularly check the City of Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation official website or their social media channels for announcements regarding these special events and programs. These initiatives enhance the dog park experience beyond just daily play.

Decently sized dog park, both times I have gone around 3 PM and it was empty. There is a shaded area to sit and its emptiness makes it a great spot for a play date! Played fetch the whole time without distractions and got them very tired.

My first visit here. Probably my last. My dog is 9 lb. Shih Tzu and Lhasa apso mixed. He was attacked within 4 minutes of us being on the other side of the gate by a cinnamon colored, white cheeks boxer. Beware 😭. The male owner did ask if my puppy was all right. I was far too traumatized by the experience it wasn't to get my dog to safety. I did not feel safe responding as I was alone. This experience was completely unexpected. I wish there was a park here for small dogs too. Maybe there is and I just didn't see it.

A consistently fun and community-minded park. Family friendly with an asphalt path around Traver Pond, great for exercising the humans.
