Mitchell Dog Park has potential, but there are a few concerns that made our visit less than ideal. First, many owners aren’t picking up after their dogs, which makes the area feel neglected. More importantly, there were several large, aggressive dogs running loose and acting unfriendly. I witnessed two separate incidents where dogs snapped at others, and the owners didn’t seem concerned at all. That’s when I decided it was best for me and my service pup to leave. Another issue is the lack of separation between large and small breeds. A few smaller dogs were unintentionally trampled, it's hard to avoid when all sizes are mixed together in an open space. I really wish more local dog parks were more than just fenced-in dirt plots. With some better maintenance, clearer rules, and designated areas for different dog sizes, this place could really shine.

Welcome to Mitchell Dog Park
For dog owners in Tempe, Arizona, finding a dedicated space where their canine companions can run free and socialize is a cherished convenience. Mitchell Dog Park, located in the heart of Tempe, aims to provide just such an environment. As a popular spot for locals, this off-leash dog park offers a place for pups to stretch their legs and interact with other dogs, promoting exercise and healthy socialization.
While Mitchell Dog Park holds significant potential as a community resource, it's essential for new and returning visitors to be aware of certain aspects to ensure a positive experience. Like any public space, the park thrives when all users adhere to best practices and rules of etiquette. Understanding the park's layout, amenities, and community expectations can help you and your furry friend make the most of your visit. This guide aims to provide a clear and factual overview of Mitchell Dog Park, offering insights for Arizona dog owners looking for a local spot for their pets.
Mitchell Dog Park is conveniently situated at the intersection of S Mitchell Dr & 9th St, Tempe, AZ 85281, USA. Its central Tempe location makes it easily accessible for residents across the city, including those attending Arizona State University (ASU), which is often reflected in the park's vibrant atmosphere. The park is nestled within the larger Mitchell Park, an 11-acre community green space that also features soccer fields, softball facilities, and other amenities, making it a multifaceted recreational hub for the neighborhood.
The park operates with generous hours, typically opening at 6:00 a.m. and closing at 12:00 a.m. (midnight). However, it's important to note that the park is closed on Mondays for maintenance work, a crucial detail for planning your visits. Ample street parking is generally available in the surrounding area, making it convenient for visitors to bring their pets. Its location within a well-established neighborhood means it's often a short drive or even a walk for many Tempe residents, adding to its local appeal.
Mitchell Dog Park primarily offers a fundamental service: a dedicated, fenced, off-leash area for dogs. While the park is not a staffed facility offering a wide range of services, it provides the essential infrastructure for an off-leash experience. Key provisions include:
-
Off-Leash Dog Run: The core of the park is its designated area where dogs can run freely without a leash. This allows for vigorous exercise and natural canine interaction.
-
Waste Disposal: While there have been reports of owners not picking up after their dogs, the expectation and standard for responsible pet ownership are that handlers clean up their pet's waste. It's recommended that visitors bring their own bags, though sometimes communal bags may be available.
-
Water Access: Amenities typically include water access points for dogs to stay hydrated, especially vital during Arizona's hot weather.
-
Seating for Owners: Benches and picnic tables are usually available within the dog park area, providing spots for owners to relax and observe their dogs.
-
Double-Gated Entry: For added security and to prevent dogs from escaping, the park is designed with a double-gated entry system.
It's always advisable for visitors to be prepared with their own water and waste bags to ensure a comfortable and responsible visit.
Mitchell Dog Park offers several features that make it a notable option for Tempe dog owners:
-
Fully Fenced Off-Leash Area: The park provides a secure, fully fenced space, giving owners peace of mind as their dogs play. This secure perimeter is essential for off-leash activity.
-
Grassy Areas: The park features grassy areas, which can be a welcome change from dirt-only dog parks, offering a softer surface for play and reducing dust.
-
Shade Trees: Given Arizona's intense sun, the presence of shade trees within the park is a significant highlight, offering respite for both dogs and their owners.
-
Central Location: Being part of the larger Mitchell Park in a well-trafficked area of Tempe means easy access for a broad segment of the local population, including ASU students.
-
Part of a Larger Park Complex: The dog park is integrated into Mitchell Park, which includes various other recreational facilities like soccer fields and softball fields. This means that dog park visitors might also enjoy other aspects of the park before or after their dog's playtime.
While the park has its strengths, it's worth noting that some users have expressed a desire for separate areas for large and small dogs, as currently all sizes are mixed in the open space. Awareness of this can help owners of very small or timid dogs plan their visit accordingly.
Mitchell Dog Park, being a public city park, doesn't typically run commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the retail sense. However, as a community space, it occasionally serves as a meeting point or host for local pet-related events or initiatives organized by community groups or non-profit organizations.
For example, the park has been a location for events like "Operation Legacy," a ruck gathering organized by the Travis Manion Foundation and Lost Dutchman Rucking Club, where participants collected donations for Lost Our Home, a local no-kill animal shelter. While these are not regular promotions, staying connected with local Tempe community calendars, pet-focused social media groups, and the City of Tempe Parks and Recreation department can inform you of any upcoming community-driven events, dog-friendly meet-ups, or charity drives that might take place at or near Mitchell Dog Park. These events offer unique opportunities for dogs and owners to engage with the wider pet community in a meaningful way.

For residents of Tempe and surrounding Arizona communities, Mitchell Dog Park offers a convenient and accessible option for off-leash dog recreation. Its central location, ample operating hours (excluding Mondays for maintenance), and integration within a larger community park make it a practical choice for daily visits. The park provides a much-needed fenced space where dogs can engage in vital exercise and social interaction, which is crucial for their well-being, especially for those living in urban environments where private outdoor space might be limited.
While some areas for improvement have been noted by visitors, such as the need for more consistent waste pick-up and potential separation of dog sizes, the fundamental offerings of Mitchell Dog Park remain valuable. The presence of grassy areas and shade trees are significant advantages in the Arizona climate, offering a more comfortable experience for both pets and their owners. For locals, particularly those in the ASU area, it serves as a straightforward and easily reachable destination for their furry friends to burn off energy and meet other pups.
Ultimately, Mitchell Dog Park is a community amenity that thrives on responsible pet ownership. By adhering to the posted rules, such as picking up after your dog, ensuring your dog is licensed and vaccinated, and monitoring their behavior for any signs of aggression, every visitor can contribute to making it a safer and more enjoyable space for everyone. It's a place with potential, and with collective effort, it can continue to be a go-to spot for Tempe's dog-loving community to connect and play.

May 27, 2025 · AmandaThis dog park has potential although a few items of concern: Lots of owners are forgetting to pick up after their dogs! See pics for more info. When we were there, two HUGE, known aggressive breed dogs were cut loose in the park...running loose and not necessarily acting friendly... they were acting aggressive. Owners not worried about possible issues whatsoever. So we picked up our two 3 pound puppies and left with a bad taste.
Nov 28, 2024 · Jonathan SukoneckGreat dog park. It's pretty small area compared to other dog pakrks we've visited but plenty of space for dogs to run around and get tired. Its only one area for small & big dogs. A couple of trees and benches for shade.
Mar 18, 2023 · Alejandro CastroWe had a great time at Mitchell Park and enjoyed the brand new playground!! Thanks to the Tempe residents who supported the parks and recreation bond, who made this update possible! One thing is I would like them to have the restrooms open to the public. Usually they seem to be closed. It may be because the school is run separately.
Apr 11, 2023 · Eileen BadenGreat dog park - huge spread out space, well maintained green turf, couple of picnic tables for seating, lots of trees for shade, one garbage can in the corner of the park. The water fountain needs maintenance and doesn’t work except one facet on the side for dogs. No drinking water for humans though. Bunch of friendly dogs and humans! Overall nice park.
