Clark Park Dog Park, nestled within the larger Clark Park, offers a significant off-leash area that caters to the energetic needs of local pups. While it's a neighborhood park with a quaint charm, it provides a crucial space for dogs to play, interact, and enjoy the outdoors.
Often described as a "huge dog park" by visitors, it boasts key amenities like natural shade and picnic tables, enhancing the experience for both two-legged and four-legged visitors. Despite being a well-established urban park, it continues to serve as a vital community hub, fostering a friendly atmosphere among pet owners. This overview aims to provide a comprehensive look at what you and your canine companion can expect when visiting Clark Park Dog Park, offering insights into its features, accessibility, and overall suitability for Arizona locals.
Clark Park Dog Park is conveniently located at 1724-1798 S McKemy St, Tempe, AZ 85281, USA. More precisely, it's situated within the broader Clark Park, often referenced at the intersection of 19th St. and Roosevelt St. in Tempe. Its neighborhood setting, just a couple of blocks off Broadway, makes it easily accessible for residents in central Tempe and surrounding areas.
The park maintains extensive daily hours, typically open from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., providing ample time for early morning exercise before the Arizona heat sets in or refreshing evening play sessions. Ample parking is usually available in the vicinity of the park. It's important for visitors to be mindful of their surroundings, particularly if visiting after dark, as suggested by some user reviews. The park is part of a larger, recently renovated 10-acre Clark Park, which also includes a new community center and pool, enhancing its overall accessibility and making it a potential destination for a longer family outing.
Clark Park Dog Park is designed to provide fundamental services that support a responsible and enjoyable off-leash environment for dogs and their owners. While it operates as a self-managed public space, it offers essential amenities:
-
Designated Off-Leash Areas: The primary service is a securely fenced space where dogs can run freely and interact without a leash, crucial for their physical and mental well-being.
-
Separate Dog Sections: The park features "a couple of smaller areas too," in addition to its main large area. This often allows for separation between large and small dogs or provides rotational use, ensuring safer play environments for all sizes and temperaments.
-
Waste Management: The park is equipped with amenities for waste disposal, including "popper scoppers on every 1/8th of the perimeter for easy pickup." While not explicitly stated, waste bags are typically provided or expected to be used by responsible owners.
-
Water Fountains: "Doggie and human water fountains" are available, ensuring both pets and their owners can stay hydrated, which is crucial in Arizona's climate.
-
Shaded Seating: The presence of "picnic tables inside" the dog park, combined with "shade trees," offers comfortable resting spots for owners to supervise their dogs.
-
Double-Gated Entrance: For enhanced safety and to prevent accidental escapes, the park features a double-gated entry system, providing a secure transition zone.
Clark Park Dog Park boasts several appealing features that contribute to its popularity among Tempe dog owners:
-
Large Play Area: Described as a "huge dog park," it provides ample space for dogs to run, play fetch, and engage in vigorous exercise, preventing overcrowding.
-
Natural Shade: A significant highlight, especially in the Arizona heat, is the presence of "shade trees" within the dog park itself. This offers crucial relief for both dogs and owners during sunny hours.
-
Picnic Tables and Seating: The availability of "picnic tables inside" the dog park allows owners to relax comfortably while their dogs play, fostering a more communal atmosphere.
-
Multiple Segregated Areas: The "couple of smaller areas too" provide flexibility, often used for small dogs, less social dogs, or as rotational sections for maintenance.
-
Grass Surface (Predominantly): While one review mentions "lots of missing grass in some areas" and muddiness near the water faucet, the park is generally described as being "covered in grass," making it a desirable surface for play.
-
Tennis Ball Abundance: The anecdotal mention of "tennis balls everywhere" suggests a community where owners often leave balls for others to use, adding to the fun.
-
Well-Maintained (General Cleanliness): Despite some specific concerns, the park is generally noted as "well-maintained," particularly regarding waste pickup due to the presence of "popper scoppers."
-
Integrated within Clark Park: Being part of the larger Clark Park, visitors have access to additional amenities like a community garden, renovated pool, playground, basketball and volleyball courts, and restrooms, making it a versatile recreational destination.
As a public park operated by the City of Tempe Parks and Recreation Department, Clark Park Dog Park does not offer commercial "promotions" or "special offers." Its primary value is in providing a free, accessible, and well-maintained public space for the community's dogs and their owners.
However, as a central community park, Clark Park and its facilities, including the dog park area, may occasionally be the site for community-organized events or city-sponsored initiatives that benefit pet owners. While specific recurring promotions for the dog park are not common, locals can look out for:
-
City of Tempe Parks & Recreation Announcements: The official City of Tempe website and its Parks and Recreation section, along with their social media channels, are the best places to find information on any upcoming pet-friendly events, workshops on responsible pet ownership, or community gatherings that might involve the dog park.
-
Clark Park Community Garden Events: Given the proximity of the Clark Park Community Garden, sometimes their events (e.g., food giveaways on the first and third Saturdays of the month) might align with dog park visits, creating a broader community experience.
-
Local Pet-Related Group Meet-ups: Tempe-based dog owner groups on social media (e.g., Facebook, Meetup) often organize informal playdates or meet-ups at local dog parks, including Clark Park.
These community-driven opportunities provide a way for locals to connect, participate in free activities, and contribute to the vibrant pet-loving community in Tempe.

May 19, 2025 · Nikki NeverdullThis dog park is a quaint spot nestled within the neighborhood, just a couple blocks off Broadway. Overall, the park is well-maintained and provides a decent space for dogs to play. However, there are some things to mention. One noticeable issue is the presence of some sketchiness and homelessness in the vicinity, which unfortunately translates to scattered chicken bones around the area. This poses a concern as we strive to keep our furry companions away from potential hazards. Due to this, and the occasional used needle discarded the same areas, I tend to keep my dog on a short leash until we reach the designated dog area. On that note, if I am wearing flip flops I don't leave the cement. Moreover, as the night progresses, the atmosphere can feel more unsettling. Personally, I take precautionary measures and carry various forms of protection when visiting after dark. Despite these challenges, my experiences at the park have been generally positive thus far. However, it's prudent for visitors to remain vigilant, especially during later hours.
Feb 15, 2024 · Ben CrawfordOne park for all dog sizes, poop bags are mounted along the fence, which is nice! There is ample shade & seating! East of the dog park is a garden & on Saturday's in the A.M.there is a farmers market.
Mar 29, 2025 · Monica Mendivil-WoodfordThis dog park is pretty decent sized, the grass was in decent shape, and all the dogs and owners were friendly and well behaved.
Nov 28, 2024 · Misty GoffmanNice dog area, grassy and lots of seats. It was crowded when I went. There is also a pretty cool looking playground, I think I will go back with my grandkids.
