This is a wonderful dog park! The dog owners are very good at cleaning up after their dogs, and watching them during play. I've met some amazing people and dogs here! There's lots of tennis balls, and a few other toys scattered around the park, but my dog's favorite is the trees! (He loves to watch birds.) There are lots of "obstacles" for the dogs to play on and around in the park as well such as large rocks, a bridge, and a piece of artwork. There are pools and water dishes at the park, but in order to access the water you need a key. I would recommend always bringing your own water just in case! There are trash bags too, which is nice if you forget yours!

Welcome to Loring Park Dog Park
Hello, Minneapolis dog lovers! If you're searching for a fantastic spot to let your furry friend run free, socialize, and enjoy some urban playtime, look no further than Loring Park Dog Park. Nestled within the iconic Loring Park, this dedicated off-leash area offers a delightful escape for dogs and their owners right in the heart of the city.
As locals, we know how valuable dedicated green spaces are, especially in a vibrant downtown area like Minneapolis. Loring Park Dog Park provides that essential outlet, offering a secure and engaging environment where dogs can exercise, play with toys, and interact with other canines and their human companions. It’s more than just a place to burn off energy; it’s a community hub where friendships blossom and tails wag.
Despite its urban setting, Loring Park Dog Park is celebrated for its welcoming atmosphere and thoughtful amenities. It caters to the needs of city dogs and their owners, providing a convenient and enjoyable spot for daily adventures. Let's explore what makes this park a beloved destination for Minneapolis's canine residents.
Loring Park Dog Park is conveniently located within the beautiful Loring Park in Minneapolis. Its official address is often cited as 1382 Willow St, Minneapolis, MN 55403, USA, which places it on the northern corner of Loring Park, near the Minneapolis Community Technical College.
Being situated in Loring Park means excellent accessibility for those living or working downtown, as well as easy access for anyone visiting the central Minneapolis area. Loring Park itself is a well-known landmark, making the dog park easy to find. For those driving, street parking is often available nearby. Its central location also means it's highly accessible via public transportation, including bus routes and light rail, allowing a wide range of Minneapolis residents to utilize this fantastic amenity without the need for a car. The park's prime spot offers unique views of the downtown skyscrapers, blending urban charm with a natural setting for your dog's playtime. This combination of central location and good accessibility makes Loring Park Dog Park a truly convenient choice for urban dog owners.
Loring Park Dog Park focuses on providing a well-equipped and maintained environment for off-leash dog play, along with amenities to enhance the experience for both dogs and their owners.
Fenced Off-Leash Play Area: The primary service is a securely fenced space where dogs can safely run, play, and socialize without a leash. This freedom is crucial for their physical and mental well-being.
Gravel Ground Cover: The park features a gravel surface, which is beneficial for keeping paws relatively clean and also provides good drainage. This helps prevent muddy conditions, especially during wetter seasons in Minnesota.
Community Toy Sharing: Visitors often find a variety of toys, including tennis balls, scattered around the park. This informal "toy library" encourages play and interaction among dogs.
On-Site Pools and Water Dishes: To help dogs cool down, especially during warmer months, the park provides pools and water dishes. It's important to note that access to running water for these features may require a key (often held by regular users or park staff), so bringing your own water is always a good idea.
Waste Bag Dispensers: For the convenience of owners and to maintain cleanliness, trash bags (often provided by kind users or the park) are usually available. This encourages responsible pet ownership and helps keep the park tidy.
Seating for Humans: The park offers plenty of seating options, including benches, allowing owners to comfortably relax and observe their dogs during playtime.
Requires Minneapolis Off-Leash Dog Park Permit: Like all Minneapolis off-leash dog parks, a valid permit is required for your dog to use the facility. This system ensures that all dogs are licensed and vaccinated, promoting a safer and healthier environment for all park visitors.
Loring Park Dog Park is distinguished by several unique features that make it a favorite among Minneapolis dog owners.
Engaging "Obstacles" and Art Elements: The park is not just a flat space; it incorporates various "obstacles" for dogs to play on and around. These include large rocks, a bridge ("The Bridge to Erehwon"), and even a piece of artwork (a 16-foot tall carved wooden totem pole by sculptor Bill Blaxley depicting stacked dogs). These elements add visual interest and provide opportunities for dogs to explore and engage.
Plenty of Shade from Trees: The presence of mature trees within and around the park provides ample shade, a highly valued feature during sunny days in Minnesota. This helps keep both dogs and owners comfortable.
Active and Responsible Community: Reviews frequently highlight that "The dog owners are very good at cleaning up after their dogs, and watching them during play." This strong community ethos contributes significantly to a positive and safe environment.
Views of Downtown Skyscrapers: Its urban location offers unique views of the Minneapolis skyline, providing an interesting backdrop for your dog's outdoor adventures.
Well-Maintained Ground Cover: The gravel surface is praised for keeping paws clean and preventing mud, a practical benefit, especially in Minnesota's varied weather.
Social Hub: Many visitors emphasize the social aspect, noting, "I've met some amazing people and dogs here!" It's a great place to connect with fellow dog enthusiasts.
Open During Extended Hours: Loring Park, and likely its dog park section, is generally open from 6 AM to 10 PM daily, allowing for early morning or late evening visits.
As a public park managed by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, Loring Park Dog Park does not offer traditional commercial promotions or discounts. However, its primary "special offer" is the provision of a high-quality, accessible public space for dog recreation.
The key element for access and an ongoing "promotion" for frequent users is the Minneapolis Off-Leash Dog Park Permit. While this permit requires a fee, it grants your dog access to all nine of Minneapolis's off-leash dog parks, providing excellent value for those who frequent these facilities. The permit system ensures that all dogs using the parks are licensed and have current rabies vaccinations, contributing to the overall health and safety of the dog park community. Daily passes are also available for short-term visitors.
Additionally, Loring Park often hosts free community events that dog owners can enjoy, such as the Annual Loring Park Dog Show + Movie Night. For example, the 5th annual event is scheduled for Thursday, July 31, 2025, and includes categories like "waggiest tail, best costume, silliest trick," followed by a movie. These free events provide fantastic opportunities for dog owners to engage with the community and showcase their pets. For specific permit pricing and event details, it is always best to check the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board's official website or the Friends of Loring Park website.

This ensures you have all the necessary details for a smooth and enjoyable visit with your canine companion.
For locals in Minneapolis, especially those residing in the downtown core or surrounding neighborhoods, Loring Park Dog Park is an exceptionally suitable and highly valued amenity. Its prime location within a well-known park offers unparalleled convenience, allowing apartment dwellers to easily provide their dogs with essential off-leash exercise and socialization without a long commute.
What truly sets this park apart for local users are its thoughtful features. The unique "obstacles" like the bridge and large rocks provide engaging elements for dogs to explore, transforming a simple play area into a more stimulating environment. The abundance of natural shade from mature trees is a significant benefit, offering comfort for both pets and owners during Minnesota's sunny seasons. While not the largest park, its efficient use of space ensures "plenty of space for dogs to get a good enough run," catering perfectly to the needs of urban dogs.
The strong sense of community, with owners who are "very good at cleaning up after their dogs, and watching them during play," fosters a welcoming and safe atmosphere. This mutual respect among users makes it easier for new visitors to integrate and for dogs to make consistent playmates. Furthermore, the requirement of a Minneapolis Off-Leash Dog Park Permit ensures a baseline of responsible pet ownership, contributing to the health and safety of all canine visitors. The presence of shared toys and opportunities to cool down in pools (though bringing your own water is wise) further enhance the experience. Loring Park Dog Park truly is an urban oasis that caters to the specific needs of Minneapolis dogs and their devoted owners, making it an indispensable part of city living for many.

Apr 23, 2024 · Megan MillisNice dog park! Not very big, but it has gravel so their paws don't get too dirty. There are pools so they can cool down, toys to play with, etc.
Aug 03, 2023 · Lindsey IbanezGreat dog park! I’m a Rover Sitter so I take dogs here all the time and they love it. The park is clean and filled with toys and has water for all the pups. I walk from my apartment to the park since it’s about a 10 minute walk there.
