No frills dog park with a separate space for small dogs. Oddly had a lot of benches - not complaining, it just seems unnecessary and would be better to have equipment for the dogs. I gave only two stars mainly because the two elderly women with golden retrievers I encountered were nasty, and didn't pick up after their dogs. I agree with another reviewer that it's a good place if you're looking for a quiet low traffic environment as it doesn't seem very popular.

Livingston Dog Park, nestled within the town of Livingston, offers just such a haven. This local amenity provides a vital outlet for canine energy and a valuable gathering spot for pet parents to connect. It’s more than just a patch of grass; it’s a community resource designed to foster happy, healthy dogs and promote responsible pet ownership. This article aims to provide a clear, engaging, and informative overview of Livingston Dog Park, helping local users understand its unique features and why it’s a suitable choice for their beloved companions.
Livingston Dog Park serves as a straightforward, no-frills environment, prioritizing the core need for off-leash exercise and socialization. It recognizes that while some dog parks can be overwhelming with high traffic, many pet owners, especially those with more reserved or smaller dogs, prefer a quieter setting. This park offers just that, providing a relaxed atmosphere where dogs can explore and interact at their own pace. The emphasis here is on simplicity and functionality, ensuring that dogs have the freedom to roam within a secure, fenced area. For New Jersey residents seeking a dependable, accessible, and less chaotic environment for their canine companions, Livingston Dog Park presents a compelling option to integrate into their regular routine, promoting both physical activity and mental well-being for their pets.
Livingston Dog Park is centrally located in Livingston, NJ 07039, USA, specifically at 101 Shrewsbury Drive. This address places it conveniently within the township, making it easily accessible for local residents and those from nearby New Jersey towns. The park is situated within a larger municipal area, often indicating good road access and potential for nearby amenities. Ample parking is generally available, which is a crucial factor for dog park visitors who often arrive with leashes, toys, and sometimes even strollers. The ease of getting to and from the park, without navigating complex routes or struggling to find parking, adds to its appeal as a practical choice for a spontaneous or planned outing with your dog. Its location helps integrate it seamlessly into the daily lives of New Jersey pet owners.
Livingston Dog Park offers a focused set of services and amenities designed to provide a safe and functional off-leash environment:
-
Off-Leash Play Areas:
- The park features two distinct, fully fenced-in areas where dogs can socialize and exercise legally off-leash.
- One area is designated specifically as a "small-dog area," catering to dogs weighing 25 pounds or less, allowing them to play without being overwhelmed by larger dogs.
- A separate "large-dog area" is open to dogs of all sizes, providing ample space for bigger breeds to run and interact.
-
Seating:
- Both the small and large dog areas are equipped with benches, providing shaded seating for owners to relax while their dogs play.
-
Water Access:
- The large dog park area includes a water fountain, which operates during frost-free days, ensuring dogs have access to fresh drinking water.
-
Waste Disposal:
- Owners are required to clean up after their dogs, and waste bags are provided, promoting cleanliness within the park.
-
Adjacent Walking Trails:
- Livingston Dog Park is part of East Hills Park, which includes a 1.5-mile nature trail with fitness stations. Dogs are permitted on these nature trails but must be kept on a leash.
-
Required Dog Park Pass System:
- All dogs using the Livingston Dog Park must be registered with the Livingston Health Department to obtain a Livingston Dog Park Pass. This pass requires health and safety documentation of vaccinations (Rabies, Parvo, Distemper), a completed application form, and a fee.
-
Hours of Operation:
- The park is open daily from 8:00 a.m. until sunset, providing ample opportunity for visits throughout the day.
Livingston Dog Park boasts several key features and highlights that make it a notable option for New Jersey dog owners:
-
Separate Areas for Small and Large Dogs:
- This is a crucial feature, as it allows smaller dogs to play safely without intimidation from larger, more boisterous canines, and vice versa. It significantly enhances the safety and enjoyment for all dogs and their owners.
-
Quiet, Low-Traffic Environment:
- As noted by several reviewers, the park tends to be less crowded than some other dog parks. This creates a more relaxed atmosphere, which is ideal for dogs who might be overwhelmed by high traffic or for owners looking for a peaceful outing. It’s also beneficial for socializing younger or more timid pups without excessive stimulation.
-
Combination of Off-Leash and Leashed Options:
- The presence of dedicated off-leash areas coupled with access to the adjacent 1.5-mile nature trail provides versatility. Owners can allow their dogs to run freely, or enjoy a leashed walk in a natural setting, catering to different exercise needs and preferences.
-
Shade and Seating:
- Both dog areas offer shade and benches, providing comfortable resting spots for owners. This is particularly valuable during warmer months, offering respite from the sun.
-
Commitment to Health and Safety (Permit System):
- The requirement for a Livingston Dog Park Pass, which necessitates up-to-date vaccinations and a licensing process, indicates a proactive approach to ensuring the health and safety of all park users. This helps maintain a healthier and more secure environment for dogs.
As a municipal dog park, Livingston Dog Park does not typically offer traditional retail promotions or sales on products. Instead, its "offers" come in the form of accessibility and community benefits:
-
Annual Dog Park Pass:
- While a fee is required for the annual dog park pass (valid until January 31st each year), this payment grants access to a safe and regulated off-leash environment throughout the year. This annual fee covers the operational costs, maintenance, and provision of amenities like waste bags and water fountains.
-
Free Waste Bags:
- The provision of waste bags is a convenience for users and promotes a clean park environment, eliminating the need for owners to bring their own.
-
Community Volunteer Opportunities:
- The park welcomes volunteers for various subcommittees (e.g., Dog Park Monitors, Communications, Maintenance, Beautification, Fundraising, Special Events). While not a direct monetary promotion, this offers residents an opportunity to contribute to their local community amenity and potentially engage with fellow dog owners, enhancing the park's value.
-
Educational Resources:
- The Livingston municipal website provides downloadable documents such as "Dog Park Rules," "Frequently Asked Questions," and "Release of Liability Form," offering valuable information to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. This educational support enhances the overall "value" of the park beyond its physical amenities.
For detailed information regarding the annual dog park pass fee and application process, New Jersey residents should contact the Livingston Health Department.

Its design with separate areas for small and large dogs directly addresses common safety and comfort concerns, ensuring that all canines can enjoy their off-leash time appropriately. The park's relatively quiet and low-traffic environment provides a peaceful alternative to busier dog parks, which can be ideal for dogs that thrive in less overwhelming settings, or for owners seeking a more serene outing.
Beyond the fenced areas, the accessibility to East Hills Park's nature trails allows for diversified exercise options, catering to both high-energy play and more leisurely leashed walks. While the requirement for an annual pass and up-to-date vaccinations ensures a safer, healthier environment for all users, it also demonstrates the town's commitment to maintaining a high-quality facility. For New Jersey residents seeking a well-maintained, safe, and thoughtfully designed off-leash area for their furry family members, Livingston Dog Park offers a practical and beneficial local solution for daily exercise, socialization, and community engagement.

Apr 18, 2024 · George FlattRarely any dogs here. Owners don’t pick up after their dogs. Ok place. South mountain is better but if you want to give your dog some low key exercise or training this is a good place.
Jan 03, 2021 · E SmithMediocre at best. South mountain reservation dog park way better! What's up Livingston?? Trails are rocky muddy and unpaved and loaded with fallen trees and poorly marked
