We love this park! Smaller than Odana Dog Park but still plenty of space to run. Also has an awesome little gully/ravine on one side with a dirt path for a more nature-filled saunter. Plenty of shade as well.

Welcome to Walnut Grove Park Dog Park
For dog owners in Madison, Wisconsin, finding the perfect spot for your furry friend to run, play, and socialize is a top priority. Look no further than the Walnut Grove Park Dog Park, a beloved local gem that offers a fantastic off-leash experience. Nestled in a convenient west-side location, this park provides a welcoming and well-maintained environment for dogs of all sizes and their human companions.
Known for its friendly regulars and diligent park management, Walnut Grove Park Dog Park stands out as a community hub for responsible dog ownership. Whether you're a long-time Madison resident or new to the area, this guide will provide you with all the essential information to make the most of your visit to this wonderful local dog park.
Walnut Grove Park Dog Park is conveniently located at 202 N Westfield Rd, Madison, WI 53717, USA. Its position on Madison's west side makes it easily accessible for many residents, offering a closer option than some of the larger, more distant dog parks. The park is situated within the broader Walnut Grove Park, which serves as a central recreation hub for the surrounding neighborhoods like Sauk Creek, Tamarack, and Wexford.
When arriving, please remember that dogs are required to be on a leash from your vehicle until you are inside the designated off-leash dog park area. This helps ensure safety for all park users, both two-legged and four-legged. The park is generally open from 4 AM to 10 PM, seven days a week, providing ample opportunities for morning romps or evening strolls with your canine companion.
Walnut Grove Park Dog Park is part of the City of Madison Parks system, which strives to provide well-maintained and enjoyable spaces for the community. While a dog park primarily offers an off-leash area for exercise, here are some key services and amenities you can expect:
- Off-Leash Dog Area: The primary service is a designated, fenced area where dogs can run freely and interact with other dogs without leashes.
- Waste Bag Dispensers: To promote a clean environment, bag dispensers are typically available for owners to pick up after their dogs.
- Trash Receptacles: Conveniently placed trash cans are provided for easy disposal of dog waste.
- Benches: There are benches within the park where owners can relax and observe their dogs playing.
- Park Management and Maintenance: The City of Madison Parks Division regularly manages the park, ensuring cleanliness, refilling dog bags, and addressing any maintenance needs. They also conduct checks for valid dog tags to ensure all park users are compliant with city regulations.
What sets Walnut Grove Park Dog Park apart and makes it a favorite among local dog owners? Here are some of its notable features and highlights:
- Fenced Enclosure: The park is fully fenced, providing a secure environment for dogs to play off-leash, giving owners peace of mind.
- Ample Space: While often described as "smaller than Odana Dog Park," it still offers plenty of room for dogs to run and play, especially given its 1.17-acre size.
- Natural Gully/Ravine: A unique feature of the park is a small gully or ravine on one side with a dirt path. This provides a more natural, nature-filled area for dogs and owners to explore beyond the open grassy space.
- Plenty of Shade: The presence of numerous shade trees throughout the park is a significant advantage, especially during warmer Wisconsin months, offering cool spots for dogs and their owners.
- Community Atmosphere: Many regulars frequent the park, creating a friendly and respectful community where owners often look out for each other and their dogs.
- Dedicated Park Staff: Users have reported positive interactions with Madison Parks staff, who not only maintain the park but also engage with visitors, sometimes even bringing treats for the dogs.
- Convenient Location: Its placement within a residential area on the west side of Madison makes it a practical choice for nearby neighborhoods.
While Walnut Grove Park Dog Park itself doesn't typically run specific "promotions" in the commercial sense, there are important fee structures and cooperative programs that benefit local dog owners. To use Walnut Grove Park Dog Park and other City of Madison off-leash dog parks, a daily or annual dog permit is required. This permit is valid from the time of purchase through December 31st of the year. Additionally, all visiting dogs must have a valid municipal dog license.
Here are the fees for 2025 permits:
- Daily Permit: $8
- Annual Permit: $43
- Annual Senior (65+) & Disabled Permit: $20
- Annual Military/Veteran Permit: $20
- Replacement Permit: $20
These permits can be purchased
online or by calling the City of Madison Parks Department. A significant benefit for Wisconsin dog owners is that the Madison dog permit is part of the Cooperative Dog Park Program. This means your permit is also valid for use in Dane County Parks, City of Sun Prairie parks, and City of Middleton parks, offering incredible value and access to a wider network of dog-friendly spaces across the region.
Please note that dogs under 5 months of age or without proper vaccinations are prohibited from the park, as they cannot be licensed. It's always a good idea to bring proof of your dog's license and vaccinations, as park rangers may conduct checks.

Jun 12, 2024 · G. ScottI've been taking my dog here on a regular basis for about a year. The regulars are super nice and respectful of the rules. They have even jumped in to help me out when my dog was getting ganged up on. Also Madison parks does a great job of managing this park. I've seen them come by to take the trash and refill the dog bags. They are super nice. One employee came with treats for the dogs. Once they came by to check dog tags. Beware as with all dog parks not everyone follows the rules and some dogs are aggressive. I leave right away when that happens.
Mar 13, 2024 · Kimberly KruegerVery nice tucked away park. Grew up in the area and just realized it was a dog park today. Dogs and owners were all very friendly. It’s my new go to in a pinch park.
Oct 24, 2024 · Richard LeonardiClosest dog park to my home, so I go there frequently. Good points: * No mud puddles. The most heavily trafficked lawn (closest to the entrance), which was more than half bare earth, has been removed & replaced with gravel. Even after a rain, this section is no longer muddy & messy. Great improvement from 2017. * There are a few trees, which provides some shade on a hot summer day. * The other people who come to the park are as friendly as those at the other parks. * Dog owners there may be a little better about cleaning up after their dogs. * It's small enough that you can see your dog at all times, even if you're sitting at one of the picnic tables. Bad: * It's a small, boring little park. * The grass doesn't get cut as often as the rest of Walnut Grove park. Harder to pick up the poop. Many of the photos are from the 2nd All Breeds Dog Party, which was held on August 3rd, 2018.
