What an amazing and LARGE dog park, close to I-40! They converted an old baseball field into a very large area for large dogs and another smaller area for smaller dogs. This is one of the nicest and definitely the biggest of the dog parks I have seen. Buster loved it, and I did too. The park has several shaded seating areas and indoor bathrooms for humans. Fairbrook Optimist Dog Park is designed with both canine and human comfort in mind, offering a range of services and amenities that enhance the experience for everyone. These thoughtful provisions ensure a clean, safe, and enjoyable visit every time.
-
Separate Fenced Areas: The park features two distinct, securely fenced sections. One area is specifically designated for large dogs (typically weighing over 30 pounds), providing them with a vast space to run and play. The other is a smaller, dedicated area for small dogs (those weighing less than 30 pounds), ensuring a safer and less intimidating environment for more petite pups.
-
Dog Water Fountains: Hydration is key for active dogs, especially during warmer months. The park provides dog water fountains in both the large and small dog areas, ensuring fresh water is always available for thirsty pooches.
-
Pet Waste Stations: Keeping the park clean is a community effort, and Fairbrook Optimist Dog Park makes it easy with multiple pet waste cleanup stations. While the City of Hickory may not always provide bags, the presence of these stations encourages responsible pet ownership and helps maintain a sanitary environment for all users.
-
Indoor Restrooms for Humans: A significant convenience for visitors, the park offers clean and accessible indoor bathrooms, a feature not always found at dog parks. This amenity ensures comfort for owners during their extended visits.
Beyond its essential services, Fairbrook Optimist Dog Park is celebrated for its unique features and highlights that make it stand out among other dog parks in North Carolina.
-
Repurposed Baseball Field Layout: The creative conversion of an old baseball field provides an exceptionally large and open space for dogs, especially in the large dog area. This vast expanse allows for extensive running, fetching, and group play, making it a dream come true for energetic dogs.
-
Obstacle Courses and Agility Equipment: To keep canine visitors engaged and physically stimulated, both the large and small dog areas include various agility equipment such as jumps and tunnels. These features provide excellent opportunities for dogs to hone their skills, burn off energy, and enjoy a more interactive play experience.
-
Shaded Seating Areas: Understanding that humans also need comfort, the park offers several individual covered shelters and park benches strategically placed throughout both dog areas. These shaded spots provide a welcome reprieve from the sun, allowing owners to relax and observe their dogs in comfort.
-
Well-Kept Grounds: Visitors consistently praise the park for its cleanliness and excellent maintenance. The commitment to keeping the grounds tidy and safe contributes significantly to the overall positive experience for both dogs and their owners.
-
Community Atmosphere: The park naturally fosters a sense of community among local dog owners. It’s a fantastic place for pups to socialize with other dogs and for owners to connect with fellow enthusiasts, sharing tips, stories, and building new friendships.

Jul 20, 2024 · Tom SlikerA repurposed baseball field serves as a great spot for dogs! A large dog space is separated from a small dog area. Dog water fountains in each area. Shelters and benches for adults, jumps and tunnels for the dogs. This is a well kept park and a nice spot to bring your pup for a visit with other locals.
Oct 24, 2024 · Dan RundquistIt is a hot June day out here at the dog park, we are spending most of our time under the shelters. Nice well kept park. Water fountain for the pups, and some equipment. Worth the stop. Looks like it was a baseball field at one time. Perfect reuse for a field. There were some homeless people fighting at the bathrooms, but they kept to themselves.
Jun 14, 2024 · David HahnNice repurposing of a baseball field. Plenty of room for my dogs to run and play with the two other dogs that were at the park. The water stations and obstacles were great features to keep dogs hydrated and entertained.
Oct 05, 2022 · Jen PaganMy pups and I just recently found this place and we LOVE it. It’s very clean and maintained. We live that there is a big dog park for dogs over 30 lbs and a little dog park for dogs under 30lbs. We have been going multiple times a week now and we have a blast!
