This is a surprisingly good dog park. In my experience, most people pick up after their dogs, so you’re not too likely to wind up stepping in poop (or having a dog who rolled in it 😖), but still watch your step because there are a lot of holes dug by dogs. There’s a small area for small dogs, but it’s pretty boring and I’ve never seen anyone in it. The big dog area is pretty solidly fenced in, has some grass but a fair amount of dirt, some trees, and a picnic table. Nothing fancy, but my dog loves getting the chance to run free and chase her friends. There’s also an orange water fountain nearby, on the edge of the skate park, with a bottom fountain for dogs. I included a picture.

Edgewood Park Dog Park is an ideal spot for dog owners in New Haven, CT, and the surrounding areas, offering a truly valuable resource for our canine companions. Its suitability for locals comes down to its core functionality and accessibility within an urban environment. Firstly, the presence of a **securely fenced, spacious off-leash area** is paramount. This allows dogs to run, play, and socialize freely, burning off energy in a safe environment that is often difficult to find in city settings. The separation of large and small dog areas, even if the small dog area is less utilized, still provides an option for those who need it, demonstrating a consideration for diverse canine needs.
Secondly, the park’s essential amenities, particularly the **dedicated dog water fountain**, are incredibly practical and convenient. This feature ensures that dogs can stay hydrated during their playtime, a crucial detail often overlooked at less equipped parks. While the ground can get muddy or have holes, these are natural characteristics of an active, outdoor dog park and contribute to the authentic experience of letting dogs explore a less manicured environment. The general cleanliness, maintained largely by the responsible behavior of fellow park-goers, speaks to the positive community spirit that thrives here.
Finally, the **friendly atmosphere** among both dogs and their owners creates a welcoming and enjoyable space. It's a place where local dog owners can connect, share experiences, and watch their pets thrive. The fact that it's "nothing fancy" is precisely why it's suitable; it’s a functional, community-oriented space focused purely on the joy and exercise of dogs. For New Haven residents seeking a reliable, accessible, and positive environment for their beloved pets, Edgewood Park Dog Park remains a top choice for consistent and satisfying off-leash fun, making it an indispensable part of our local pet-friendly landscape.

Jun 19, 2021 · Cecilee TelfordWent there for two yrs straight while my pup was growing up. Stayed outside more than inside as all the people with rescue dogs and zero knowledge how to deal with them would just go in and release. Great for walks on leash all around but be careful in the fenced area depending on who's inside and what handle do they have on their dog.
Dec 19, 2018 · Andy GreenThis place needs a recent review. Double gate with large & small dog areas is great but front gate is broken. Everything is overgrown and the enclosed space isn’t that big. It could certainly be a bigger dog park considering there isn’t even a path to get to it. There should also be a sign to beware of ticks.
Sep 24, 2021 · Justin DonaldsonThis place looks like it's from Chernobyl. Overgrown, and completely intact. It's very strange. But its still a place to let your dog room free.
