It's a rustic park. The section I included in the video is the only flat section. The rest is a short looped trail that goes down the hill, to the east (left), and returns via gentle switchbacks. It's not fully enclosed (some stairs at the bottom go onto a residential street), and I would avoid it if your dog is prone to foxtails. It would be a good park if you were trying to get your dog used to hiking with you off leash, as long as they wouldn't take off through the open section.

Welcome to Dog Park | Heather School
Nestled in the picturesque hills of San Carlos, California, lies the Heather School Dog Park – a distinctive and beloved spot for local dog owners seeking a more natural and adventurous experience for their canine companions. This isn't your typical manicured, flat dog park; instead, it offers a rustic charm, complete with varying terrains and breathtaking views that truly set it apart. If you're a California dog parent looking for a place where your pup can explore trails, enjoy off-leash freedom, and revel in the beauty of the Bay Area landscape, Heather School Dog Park might just be your next favorite destination.
What makes Heather School Dog Park so special? It's the blend of open space and natural trails, providing a diverse environment for dogs of all energy levels. While there's a relatively flat section perfect for a quick game of fetch or socialization, the park truly shines with its looped trail system that meanders down and up a gentle hill. This offers a fantastic opportunity for dogs to get a more robust workout, practice their off-leash hiking skills, and engage with nature in a way that many urban dog parks simply can't provide. It’s a place where you can escape the concrete jungle and let your dog truly be a dog, exploring scents, enjoying the varied terrain, and taking in some truly "awesome views" as one satisfied visitor put it.
For those who appreciate a less conventional dog park experience, one that leans more towards a mini-hike than a fenced-in run, Heather School Dog Park is a must-visit. It’s a testament to the diverse recreational opportunities available to pet owners in California, providing a unique blend of exercise, scenery, and natural exploration. It's a testament to how local spaces can be adapted to serve the needs of the community, offering a vital resource for dogs and their human companions alike to connect with the outdoors.
The Heather School Dog Park is conveniently located at 2757 Melendy Dr, San Carlos, CA 94070, USA. Its unique setting, adjacent to Heather School, makes it easily identifiable for locals. While the address points to Melendy Drive, the park is directly accessible from the school grounds.
One of the key advantages of this park is the ease of parking. Visitors can often utilize the Heather School parking lot, especially outside of peak school hours. Many local users appreciate this flat and spacious parking area, providing a hassle-free start to their park visit. Finding the park itself is relatively straightforward; once you're at the school, the dog park is situated nearby, offering a seamless transition from your car to your dog's play area.
The park's hours are generally from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, seven days a week, according to some online sources. However, it is always a good practice to check with the City of San Carlos Parks and Recreation for the most up-to-date information on operating hours and any potential closures or maintenance schedules. The park's location in San Carlos also places it within easy reach for residents of neighboring communities on the Peninsula, making it a popular choice for those seeking a varied off-leash experience beyond typical flat dog runs.
Off-Leash Dog Area: The core service of Heather School Dog Park is its designated off-leash area, allowing dogs to run, play, and socialize freely within specified boundaries. This freedom is essential for a dog's well-being and energy release.
Looped Trail System: Beyond a flat section, the park offers a unique looped trail that descends and ascends a hill. This provides an excellent opportunity for dogs to enjoy a more natural "hiking" experience off-leash, offering varied terrain for exploration and exercise.
Natural Environment: The park embraces its rustic nature, featuring plenty of trees and grass. This provides a more natural and stimulating environment for dogs compared to parks with artificial turf or strictly maintained landscapes.
Scenic Views: As highlighted by visitors, the park offers "awesome views." While not a direct service, the aesthetic appeal of the surroundings greatly enhances the experience for both dogs and their owners, providing a pleasant backdrop for their time outdoors.
Rustic and Natural Setting: Unlike highly manicured dog parks, Heather School Dog Park boasts a rustic charm. This appeals to dog owners who prefer a more natural, less urban environment for their pets. The "heart-pumping hill" on the trail adds to this natural, challenging aspect.
Varied Terrain: The park offers a mix of a flat section for open play and a looped trail system with gentle switchbacks. This varied terrain caters to different levels of activity and can be particularly good for dogs getting accustomed to off-leash hiking.
"Awesome Views": Multiple reviews highlight the impressive views from the park. This makes it not just a place for dog exercise, but also a pleasant spot for owners to enjoy the scenery of the San Carlos area.
Good for Off-Leash Hiking Practice: Given its trails and less formal enclosure (with some open sections), the park is noted as a good place to train dogs for off-leash hiking, provided they have good recall and are not prone to wandering off.
Ample Parking: The availability of the adjacent Heather School parking lot is a significant convenience, offering plenty of flat space and making access easy for visitors.
Less Crowded: Some visitors have noted that the park can be less crowded than other dog parks, especially during certain times. This can be a highlight for dogs and owners who prefer a quieter environment for play and relaxation.
As a public park maintained by the City of San Carlos, Heather School Dog Park does not offer traditional promotions or special offers such as discounts or loyalty programs. Its primary "promotion" is its accessibility as a free public amenity for dog owners. The value it provides lies in its unique natural features and the opportunity for off-leash exercise in a beautiful setting without any cost of admission.
The ongoing maintenance and availability of this space are supported by local tax dollars, making it a community asset rather than a commercial venture. Any potential community events or specific initiatives at the park would typically be organized by the City of San Carlos Parks and Recreation Department. For information on such events, it is advisable for locals to consult the City of San Carlos official website or community announcements. The consistent benefit of the Heather School Dog Park remains its reliable provision of a distinct and engaging outdoor space for canine companionship.

Heather School Dog Park stands out as an exceptional spot for local California dog owners, particularly those residing in San Carlos and its neighboring communities. Its suitability for locals stems from several key aspects that cater to the diverse needs of both dogs and their human companions.
Firstly, its unique, rustic character offers a refreshing alternative to more conventional, flat dog parks. For dogs that thrive on exploration and varied terrain, the short looped trail system provides an excellent opportunity for a more engaging and stimulating off-leash experience. This natural setting, with its trees, grass, and "heart-pumping hill," encourages a different kind of play and exercise, allowing dogs to engage their senses and muscles in ways they might not in a smaller, enclosed area.
Secondly, the park's scenic views are a significant draw. For locals looking to combine their dog's exercise with their own enjoyment of the outdoors, the picturesque backdrop makes every visit more pleasant. It transforms a routine dog walk into a mini-escape, allowing owners to relax and appreciate the beauty of their Californian surroundings.
Furthermore, the practicalities for local users are well-addressed. The availability of easy and flat parking at the adjacent Heather School is a major convenience, removing the stress of searching for a spot. While the park is noted as not fully enclosed in all sections (particularly where stairs lead to a residential street), this characteristic can actually be a benefit for responsible dog owners who are working on off-leash training and recall, providing a more "real-world" hiking simulation in a relatively controlled environment. It’s a prime spot for dogs to practice their trail manners and build confidence off-leash, provided they are not prone to darting off.
In essence, Heather School Dog Park is more than just an off-leash area; it's a natural playground that caters to the adventurous spirit of dogs and their owners. Its unique features, combined with its accessibility and scenic charm, make it a highly suitable and cherished resource for locals seeking a distinctive and fulfilling outdoor experience with their beloved canine companions in San Carlos, California. It truly embraces the natural beauty of the region, offering a memorable outing every time.

May 11, 2025 · Bill DemeterAwesome views! Lots of trees, grass, a few little trails and a heart pumping hill. Easy parking once you find it.. we felt bad using the school parking lot, but so thankful that it was flat and there was plenty of room. Not many dogs or humans at 5:30pm Monday.
Mar 26, 2024 · Astrid D.Fun little park. It is not completely closed off so if you have a wandering dog this may not be the best place for your dog. There is a trail to walk that seems to be an on leash trail.
Jan 31, 2019 · Angela ChenNot your typical dog park, and in a good way. The majority of the park isn't just a flat fenced in area, it is a hillside with trails on which you can walk your dog off leash. It can be pretty hard to find if you don't know exactly where it is. You should park in the heather School parking lot, on the side away from the school building. There is a cell tower there, and a walkway around the tower leads back to the dog park. Just inside the park is a flat area that's great for ball throwing and that sort of play, then there is a path that zig-zags down the hillside and makes a loop to the far end of the park and back. Part of the path is through a grove of oaks, and part is on bare hillside with expansive views to the south as far as Stanford and the south bay mountains.
Jan 20, 2017 · Keith HearnThe dog park is unkept. Parking should be Heather School or Melendy Drive. Porto Marino Lane address is a private home and the trail to the dog park has lots of spider webs and dog poop. Better to park on Melendy and enter vis Heather school parking lot
