Welcome to Dog Park at Hellyer County Park
For dog owners in San Jose and across California’s vibrant Bay Area, finding a spacious and secure environment where their furry companions can truly stretch their legs and socialize is a top priority. The Dog Park at Hellyer County Park stands as a notable destination, offering a dedicated off-leash area within the larger, expansive county park. While Hellyer County Park itself is a vast urban oasis with various amenities, the dog park section provides a specific haven for canines to enjoy unrestrained play and interaction. It’s a place designed to cater to the energetic needs of dogs while fostering a sense of community among "nice pet parents."
This dog park is particularly recognized for its generous "large grassy area with room to run," a highly valued feature that allows dogs ample space for zooming, chasing, and engaging in vigorous play. Despite some feedback regarding its grooming or occasional wet ground, the fundamental offerings of space and dedicated areas for different dog sizes make it a practical choice for many local residents. The Dog Park at Hellyer County Park serves as an essential recreational outlet, contributing significantly to the physical well-being and social development of San Jose’s dog population, all within a designated, fenced environment that offers peace of mind to responsible owners.
The Dog Park at Hellyer County Park is located at 985 Hellyer Ave, San Jose, CA 95111, USA. This address places it conveniently within Hellyer County Park, a large urban park in the heart of Santa Clara County. Its location off of Highway 101 at the Hellyer Avenue exit on the north side of the park makes it relatively easy to access for those traveling by car from various parts of San Jose and the wider Bay Area.
Accessibility to the dog park within Hellyer County Park is straightforward, though it comes with a notable consideration: a vehicle entrance fee. While the use of the off-leash facility itself is free, entering the county park by car incurs a $6 parking cost. This fee, however, often contributes to the maintenance of the overall park facilities, including the dog park. For those with children, the presence of a "great play structure on the other side of the park" can help "offset the cost of parking with other non-dog activities," making it a versatile family destination. The dog park is a fenced-off area, providing clear boundaries for the off-leash space. Despite occasional reports of wet or muddy conditions, the large, open nature of the area generally ensures plenty of room for dogs to move around. Public transportation options in San Jose, such as VTA bus lines, may also offer routes that stop within walking distance of Hellyer County Park, providing an alternative for those who prefer not to drive. Overall, the Dog Park at Hellyer County Park offers a well-defined and accessible space for dog owners, situated within a larger recreational hub.

- Separate Areas for Large and Small Dogs: A notable feature is the division of the dog park into two distinct areas, one for "small and large dogs." This separation helps ensure safer play interactions by minimizing potential conflicts between different sizes and energy levels.
- Large Grassy Play Space: The park boasts a "large grassy area," providing a natural and comfortable surface for dogs to play on, which is ideal for running, fetching, and wrestling.
- Water Spigot with Bowls: Essential for hydration, a "water spigot available with lots of bowls" is provided, ensuring dogs have access to fresh water during their active play, particularly important in California's climate.
- Friendly Pet Parent Community: While not a tangible service, the park attracts "nice pet parents," contributing to a generally friendly and responsible atmosphere that enhances the social experience for both dogs and their owners.
- Waste Disposal Facilities: Although not explicitly detailed in the provided reviews, as a county park, it is standard to have waste disposal bins available, encouraging responsible cleanup after pets.

- Separate Enclosures for Dog Sizes: The park is "fenced off into two areas for small and large dogs." This thoughtful separation is a key feature, allowing smaller or more timid dogs to play safely away from larger, more boisterous canines, thereby catering to a wider range of dog sizes and temperaments.
- Available Water Supply: The presence of a "water spigot available with lots of bowls" is a convenient and essential feature, ensuring that dogs can stay hydrated during their visit, especially during warm weather.

As a public facility managed by Santa Clara County Parks, the Dog Park at Hellyer County Park does not typically offer commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the retail sense. Its primary value to the community is its consistent availability as a recreational space. However, its ongoing benefits can be considered a continuous "special offer" for local residents:
- Free Use of Dog Park Facility: The most significant "promotion" is that the use of the off-leash facility itself is free, providing invaluable opportunities for dog exercise and socialization without a direct usage fee.
- Access to Broader Park Amenities: The park's location within Hellyer County Park provides a continuous "offer" of access to the larger park's facilities. While vehicle entry has a fee, this allows for a full day of family activities, potentially "offsetting the cost of parking" by combining dog park visits with playgrounds, picnic areas, and walking trails for all family members.
- Health and Wellness Benefits: Regular visits to a large, dedicated dog park contribute directly to the physical and mental well-being of dogs, offering essential exercise and opportunities for social interaction. This ongoing benefit for healthier and happier pets is a continuous "offer" to pet owners.
- Community Building: The presence of "nice pet parents" fosters a positive community environment, allowing for informal social interactions and connections among local dog owners, which is an intangible but valuable "offer."

Nice pet parents! Large grassy area with room to run. Water spigot available with lots of bowls.
Dec 21, 2024 · Rebecca StaffordThis is an ok dog park. Parking costs $6. The dog park is fenced of into two areas for small and large dogs. Overall both spaces are open and large but have little grooming. On the day we visited the ground was very wet and muddy despite not having rain for over a week. Honestly I think there better parks that available at no cost. If you have children there is a great play structure in the other side of the park, which can offset the cost of parking with other non dog activities
Jan 05, 2019 · Mike OliverJust moved to the area and this was our first time here. A great experience. Dogs were well-behaved, owners were super friendly. Real grass (yay!!!!!!!) and lots of toys, water buckets and a water pump for clean, fresh water. Lots of places to sit in the sun or shade. Worth the $6 park fee but we plan to come often so we bought a county park pass. Lots of areas to the park where you can relax. Oh, the dog park is closed on Wednesdays for maintenance. Overall awesome place!
Jun 08, 2021 · Chrystal ByrdHands down the BEST dog park in San Jose. Every corner of this giant field has a different feel and vibe. There is also a good amount of dogs that always show up; things can get hectic from 6-8pm but it is usually a lot calmer in the morning and early day. Almost all the owners keep a close eye on their dogs, with a few exceptions of course. There is a $6 dollar entrance fee, but you only need to pay if the workers are there, which is about 3/7 days of the week. Most people park in the neighborhood around the corner to avoid paying.
Aug 18, 2021 · Andrew NolascoParking was $6, the park is clean, the area is also bigger than I thought it would be. Most of the dogs here are friendly. Would definitely recommend a visit!
