The dog park itself is great and amazing. It is HUGE, especially if you have a larger pup (there’s a space for small dogs too, mine is just big)! They have two sides they use interchangeably and sometimes at the same time. Most dogs are friendly and owners typically clean after their dogs, however, there are a couple of frequent pups with reactivity issues and/or resource guarding issues. My dog was just attacked the other day by one habitual offender and the owner states that they will continue bringing their dog because it’s “unfair” to take away their socialization😂so buy pet correct if you’re coming!

Mettlers Road provides straightforward access, ensuring that residents from Somerset and surrounding New Jersey towns can easily reach the park. Ample free parking is available nearby, a significant convenience for dog owners arriving with their pets and often various supplies. The park's integration within Colonial Park also means it benefits from the broader park's infrastructure and natural beauty, making the journey to and from the dog park a pleasant part of the overall experience. Colonial Dog Park provides a comprehensive range of amenities and features designed specifically for the enjoyment and safety of dogs and their owners:
-
Expansive Off-Leash Areas:
- The park is described as "HUGE," offering extensive, fully fenced space for dogs to run, play, and socialize freely off-leash.
- It features two large, interchangeable sides, sometimes used simultaneously, providing ample room even during busier times.
-
Separate Small Dog Area:
- A dedicated, fully fenced section is available specifically for smaller dogs (typically under 25 pounds), ensuring a safer and more comfortable play environment away from larger, more boisterous canines.
-
Natural Ground Surface:
- The park is primarily grass, which is preferred by many dog owners for its comfort on paws and joints during active play, and for maintaining cleanliness.
-
Shaded Seating & Tables:
- Numerous benches and tables are provided throughout the park, offering comfortable and often shaded spots for owners to relax and supervise their pets.
-
Double-Gated Entrance:
- The park features double-gated entry and exit points, a crucial safety measure to prevent dogs from accidentally escaping and to ensure a secure transition into and out of the off-leash area.
-
Water Access:
- There is water access available, including a water fountain, ensuring dogs can stay hydrated, especially during warmer weather. Some sources also mention a dog washing area.
-
Waste Disposal Stations:
- Poop bags are readily available, and trash receptacles are conveniently located, encouraging and facilitating responsible waste cleanup to maintain a clean and hygienic environment.
-
Integration with Colonial Park Trails:
- While dogs must be leashed outside the designated dog park, the proximity to the extensive walking trails within Colonial Park allows for a diverse outing, combining off-leash play with a leisurely leashed stroll in a picturesque setting.
Colonial Dog Park stands out with several key features and highlights that make it a highly desirable destination for New Jersey dog owners:
-
Exceptional Size and Layout:
- The most frequently praised feature is its immense size. The "HUGE" space, combined with the two interchangeable sides, provides unparalleled room for dogs to run at full speed, play fetch, and engage in vigorous exercise, preventing overcrowding even during peak times. This is a significant advantage over smaller, more cramped dog parks.
-
Thoughtful Separation for All Sizes:
- The provision of a dedicated small dog area is crucial. It ensures that tiny pups can play without fear of being intimidated or accidentally injured by larger dogs, fostering a safe and enjoyable experience for all canine visitors.
-
Engaged and Conscientious Community:
- Despite isolated incidents, the park is largely described as having a "nice community of conscientious pet parents who are vigilant about their dogs' behaviors." This active community oversight contributes to a positive and welcoming atmosphere where owners often help each other maintain safety and cleanliness.
-
Excellent Amenities for Owners:
- The abundance of shaded seating areas and tables allows owners to comfortably supervise their dogs. The presence of water access and readily available waste bags further enhances convenience and promotes a clean environment, making it a pleasant experience for humans as well.
-
Versatile Outdoor Experience:
- Being part of the larger Colonial Park, the dog park offers the unique advantage of combining intense off-leash play with the option of leashed walks on scenic trails. This caters to diverse exercise needs and preferences, making it a full-day outing destination for many families.
As a public facility managed by the Somerset County Park Commission, Colonial Dog Park does not offer traditional commercial promotions or sales. Its "offers" come in the form of accessible public services and community benefits:
-
Free Public Access:
- The primary "promotion" is the park's free availability to all dog owners. There are no admission fees, making it a highly accessible and cost-effective resource for daily dog exercise and socialization for New Jersey residents.
-
Complimentary Waste Bags:
- The provision of free pet waste bags at various stations around the park encourages cleanliness and makes it easier for owners to fulfill their responsibility of cleaning up after their dogs.
-
Essential Amenities Included:
- The presence of benches, tables, water access, and trash receptacles are all provided as public services, enhancing the comfort and convenience of the park experience without additional charge to the user.
-
Community Events:
- While not a constant "offer," public parks occasionally host community-led events or gatherings. For instance, an event called "March Frap-ness 2025" was scheduled, indicating that the park can be a venue for dog-related community activities, adding social value. Such events would be announced through official park channels or local community groups.
For any specific inquiries regarding park operations, rules, or potential future events, residents are encouraged to contact the Somerset County Park Commission directly.

For dog owners across New Jersey, and particularly those in the Somerset area, Colonial Dog Park is an exceptionally suitable and highly valued local resource. Its most significant advantages are its immense size and thoughtful dual-area layout, which provide ample, safe space for dogs of all sizes to play freely. This helps mitigate the common issues of overcrowding and potential conflicts found in smaller, undifferentiated dog parks. The predominantly grassy surface is another major draw, offering a more natural and comfortable play environment for dogs.
Despite the occasional challenge inherent in any public off-leash area, the park benefits from a largely "conscientious" and vigilant community of pet parents who actively contribute to its positive atmosphere. The availability of shaded seating, water access, and readily provided waste bags further enhances the convenience and enjoyment for human visitors. Being part of the larger Colonial Park also offers the unique benefit of combining vigorous off-leash play with the option for more serene, leashed walks on adjacent trails. For New Jersey residents seeking a spacious, well-equipped, and community-oriented environment for their canine companions, Colonial Dog Park in Somerset stands as an excellent choice for daily exercise, socialization, and overall canine well-being.

Apr 27, 2025 · washingtonColonial Dog Park is a fantastic place for responsible dog owners to take their pups! It's a nice community of conscientious pet parents who are vigilant about their dogs' behaviors and all want to create a positive environment for the pups. It has been very welcoming and a great place for my pup to get out some energy, or to just lounge on the tables.
Aug 07, 2024 · Leah MaraHello everyone. I've been going to ColonialPark every since I got most likely my last dog.He happens to be a Doberman from a well known breeder his brother is with one of my Vietnam friends. I believe Dobermans have a reputation when people teach them they will be aggressive. I went to the park my dog loves playing with all dogs . As some people came in one person came and was afraid of him just because of what he was. Never saw this before a few people told me not to leave. I love the park the dogs and the people .My dog Is taught not to be aggressive.
Mar 14, 2025 · Steve BartonIf you're a dog owner in search of a great park to visit with your furry friend, I highly recommend checking out this dog park. Not only is it a fantastic place to unleash your dog and let them stretch their legs, but it's also a beautiful. I recommend bringing a plenty of water for both you and your dog. That is a part of large park, so you can easily continue your walk or outdoor after spending some time in the dog park. I highly recommend checking out this dog park if you're in the area.
Apr 16, 2023 · richard yukioA leash-free dog park with two big fields. Very clean because most people pick up after their dogs. I see the park staff always making sure the fences have no holes for dogs to escape. I always bring my dog here as there is easily enough room for over 200 dogs to comfortably run around.
