The dog area was fine, nothing special. It’s a open space with some trails for dogs to get some exercise. There were rules posted everywhere saying dogs must be leashed yet at least ten people showed up with loose dogs, so I ended up leaving and walking my dogs in other areas of the park.

Services Offered

The Chalco Hills Dog Exercise Area, being primarily an open, natural space, offers services focused on providing a comfortable and functional environment for dogs and their owners within its unique setup.

  • Expansive Open Space: The primary "service" is the vast amount of open land and trails available for dogs to explore. This allows for extensive running and natural play, particularly beneficial for high-energy breeds.
  • Designated Dog Exercise Area: While Chalco Hills Recreation Area generally requires dogs to be leashed, there is a "designated fenced dog exercise area set aside by the District" where off-leash play is permitted. However, it's important to note that some sources describe it as "unfenced" or "not fully fenced," suggesting that while a specific zone exists, it may feel more open than a typical dog park. Visitors should confirm the current fencing situation upon arrival or via official NRD resources.
  • Walking Trails: The area features trails that dogs can use, offering varied terrain for walks and runs, enriching the exercise experience beyond just an open field.
  • Scenic Views and Nature Immersion: The park provides ample opportunities for wildlife viewing and immersion in a natural setting, with trees, open land, and proximity to Wehrspann Lake.
  • Shaded Seating Areas (in broader recreation area): Within the larger Chalco Hills Recreation Area, there are picnic sites and shaded seating areas where owners can relax. It's reasonable to assume some form of seating might be available within or near the dog exercise zone.
  • Waste Disposal (bring your own bags recommended): While information on specific waste bag dispensers within the dog exercise area is varied, it's always recommended for visitors to bring their own poop bags to ensure cleanliness, as is standard for public parks. Trash receptacles are available throughout the broader park.
Features / Highlights

What truly makes the Chalco Hills Dog Exercise Area a distinctive choice for Omaha-area dog owners are its unique natural attributes and the experiences it offers.

  • Natural and Expansive Environment: Unlike many urban dog parks, Chalco Hills offers a rugged, natural landscape with trails, open fields, and proximity to Wehrspann Lake, providing a more adventurous and stimulating environment for dogs.
  • "Off-Leash-ish" Freedom (with strong recall): While rules indicate dogs should be leashed in most areas of Chalco Hills Recreation Area, the designated "Dog Exercise Area" allows for off-leash play. This makes it ideal for dogs with excellent recall who thrive in less constrained environments.
  • Vast Acreage: The entire Chalco Hills Recreation Area spans 940 acres, with a 250-acre lake. While the dog exercise area is a smaller portion of this, it benefits from the vast surrounding natural beauty. Some reports indicate the dog exercise area itself is quite large.
  • Trails for Exploration: The presence of winding trails provides an engaging way for dogs and owners to get exercise, offering more than just a flat open field.
  • Scenic Beauty: The area is known for its beautiful views, especially around Wehrspann Lake, offering a pleasant backdrop for your dog's playtime.
  • Wildlife Viewing Opportunities: The natural setting provides chances to observe local wildlife, adding another element of interest to your visit.
  • Quiet Atmosphere (potentially): While popular, its expansive nature might allow for a less crowded experience than smaller, more contained dog parks, especially during off-peak hours.
Promotions or Special Offers

As a public facility managed by the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District (NRD), Chalco Hills Dog Exercise Area does not typically offer commercial "promotions" or "special offers" for park entry, as it is generally free to use. The primary "offer" is the provision of a vast and natural public space for canine recreation.

However, the NRD and other local organizations occasionally host events within the broader Chalco Hills Recreation Area that can be considered a "special offer" to the community, some of which are dog-friendly:

  • Tails 'n Trails Races: Chalco Hills is a popular venue for running events, including the "Tails 'n Trails" Half Marathon, 10K, 5K, and 1 Mile Walk, which specifically allows participants to run with their leashed dogs. While there's a registration fee for these races, it's a fantastic organized activity for active dog owners.
  • Educational Programs: The Natural Resources Center, located within Chalco Hills, sometimes hosts educational programs related to nature and conservation, which could be of interest to park visitors.
  • Community Clean-up Days: Occasionally, volunteer-led clean-up efforts or park maintenance days might be organized, offering a way for the community to contribute to the park's upkeep.

To stay informed about specific dog-friendly events or general happenings at Chalco Hills Recreation Area, it's highly recommended to check the Papio-Missouri River NRD's official website (papionrd.org) under their "Recreation & Wildlife" or "Events" sections.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

For Nebraska dog owners, particularly those in the Omaha area, Chalco Hills Dog Exercise Area offers a unique and highly suitable alternative to traditional fenced dog parks. Its primary appeal lies in its expansive, natural setting, providing an unparalleled sense of freedom and adventure for dogs who thrive in open spaces. This is ideal for high-energy pups that need significant room to run, or those whose owners enjoy longer walks and exploring trails with their canine companions.

While a reviewer noted a discrepancy between posted leash rules and actual off-leash dog activity, this highlights the park's "off-leash-ish" nature, where responsible owners with dogs demonstrating excellent recall can enjoy extended freedom. It's crucial for visitors to understand this dynamic and ensure their dog is well-behaved and responsive. The presence of varied terrain, from open fields to wooded trails and a gully, offers rich sensory stimulation and a more engaging experience than flat, manicured lawns. The "great place" review regarding no issues with aggressive dogs also speaks to a generally positive and community-minded user base.

Chalco Hills Dog Exercise Area is not just a place for dogs to run; it's an opportunity for dogs and their owners to connect with nature, enjoy scenic views, and participate in a more vigorous form of exercise. For locals seeking a vast, natural, and free environment where their well-behaved dog can truly unleash their instincts, this area within Chalco Hills Recreation Area is an exceptional choice. It represents a different, yet equally valuable, facet of Nebraska's commitment to dog-friendly outdoor spaces, perfect for the adventurous pup and their human.

Great place. I've had no issues with any aggressive dogs here.

The dog park area is pretty huge and the trails are well groom to walk on. Main complaints are pet owners need to pick up after their pets dropping.

We love going here! The trees and tall grass give my dogs lots of places to explore, us even when the park is busy, it doesnt seem like it. It's also well maintained with wide mowed paths, plus a few small game trails through the trees. The only downsides I could see are that it doesn't have a latched gate so if your dog was a runner they might end up in the parking lot or at the road, and there is a trail that borders the off leash area that has cyclists on it. One photo is from April and one is from May.

It's listed as an off leash area but it's still completely undeveloped and the fence has giant gaps right next to the busy street (Giles). It had rained so it was very muddy no water bags available, no water except what looked like jugs left by visitors. It could be really nice eventually but right now this is not a park for dogs to be off leash.
