I run a local betta fish rescue and this store’s betta care is awful. I’ve offered before to take any sick bettas to help them, as I have all the treatments required and they refused to give them to me. I’ve even asked for discounts but the manager there said he “doesn’t believe in discounting animals”. I guess he’d rather they die in their small, toxic cups. Today I purchased 2 bettas. One was laying on his side, obvious swim bladder infection. The other one barely fit in his cup and there was black particles floating around him. It’s absolutely absurd that they want you to pay $22 for fish that are taken care of so badly. Below is pictured the ammonia and nitrite levels in the cups those fish were living in. Those are absolutely toxic living conditions and this is animal abuse. If petco cannot manage to care for the animals they are selling properly, they should not be selling them.

Petco Introduce
When searching for a reliable "Pet Store Near Me" in St Francis, Wisconsin, Petco at 4698 S Whitnall Ave stands out as a prominent option. This location can be reached at (414) 481-3178 or +1 414-481-3178. Petco is a well-known national chain of pet stores offering a wide array of products and services for various types of pets.
Based on available information, including customer reviews, it's important for local users to have a balanced understanding of what Petco in St Francis offers. While some customers have lauded the store for its selection of specialized products and knowledgeable staff, particularly concerning pet allergies, others have raised significant concerns regarding the care of certain animals, specifically betta fish.
One customer, identifying as running a local betta fish rescue, reported deeply concerning conditions in which the betta fish were kept. The review described fish lying on their sides, indicative of potential swim bladder infections, and others housed in cups barely large enough for them with visible black particles in the water. The customer further stated that the ammonia and nitrite levels in the water of these cups were toxic, presenting photographic evidence to support these claims. Allegedly, the store management refused offers of assistance for sick bettas and stated a policy against discounting animals, seemingly prioritizing profit over the well-being of these fish. This paints a concerning picture of the environment for small aquatic life at this particular Petco location.
On a more positive note, another customer shared a very different experience, highlighting the store's ability to cater to pets with specific needs. This reviewer mentioned their dog's severe allergies and expressed gratitude for the staff's knowledge regarding ingredients and their willingness to go the extra mile to find suitable products. They also noted a positive team environment among the staff, suggesting a degree of helpfulness and collaboration within the store.
Considering these contrasting experiences, local users seeking a "Pet Store Near Me" should be aware of both the potential strengths and weaknesses of this Petco location. In terms of environment, the store likely offers a standard retail layout common to pet supply chains, featuring aisles stocked with food, toys, bedding, and accessories for dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, and fish. However, the negative review regarding the living conditions of the betta fish raises questions about the overall standards of animal care within the store, at least for certain species.
Regarding services, Petco typically offers a range of options, which may include pet grooming, veterinary clinics (often third-party partnerships operating within the store), adoption events in collaboration with local shelters, and potentially training classes. The positive review mentioning knowledgeable staff suggests that assistance with product selection and advice on pet care might be available, particularly in areas like dietary restrictions and allergies. However, the alleged refusal to provide care or assistance for sick betta fish contradicts this positive aspect and indicates potential inconsistencies in staff training or management priorities.
In terms of features, Petco as a chain often carries a wide variety of brands, including both popular and specialized options. They frequently have loyalty programs and offer online ordering with in-store pickup. The availability of specific features like a self-service dog wash or a dedicated reptile section would need to be confirmed by visiting the store or contacting them directly. The contrasting reviews highlight a key feature – the availability of products for pets with allergies, which is a significant benefit for owners of such animals in the local area.
Promotional information is not provided in the given data. Typically, Petco offers various promotions, discounts, and sales events throughout the year. Local users are advised to check the Petco website, sign up for their email list, or inquire in-store for current offers at the St Francis location.
In conclusion, Petco at 4698 S Whitnall Ave in St Francis, WI, presents a mixed picture for local pet owners searching for a "Pet Store Near Me." While it appears to offer a good selection of products and knowledgeable staff, particularly for pets with specific needs like allergies, there are serious concerns raised by a customer regarding the welfare and living conditions of betta fish. Potential customers, especially those interested in purchasing small aquatic animals, should exercise caution and consider visiting the store to assess the environment and animal care practices firsthand. For other pet needs, such as food and supplies, the store may still be a convenient option, especially given the positive feedback regarding product availability and staff assistance in certain areas. It is crucial for Petco to address the animal welfare concerns raised to ensure a positive experience for all customers and the animals in their care.

Aug 12, 2024 · Stephanie LaddMy dog is allergic to life. PetCo always seems to have things he is able to consume. I appreciate the knowledge of the staff with allergies and ingredients in their products. Going above and beyond to help each other out too. A lot of good teamwork noticed at this location.
Dec 28, 2024 · Stacy KellyKind of pricy even with their app. At least you can see their expiration on their bags of cat food, and they stock a variety of choices. I had looked for a large bag of Blue (with the wildcat photo on the bag) at Pick n Save (Holt Ave) prior to making the trip to Petco on Whitnall. PnS only had 2 large bags of salmon, and I could not find the expiration date. PnS was less expensive for no choice, no expiration date, but I don’t take chances with our cats.
Feb 25, 2025 · Joyce PluskotaDecent but now will never recommend to anyone! Kicked out of store when banter was reciprocated so o stars to this location! Have never been denied getting what my pets need till now! Was a good atmosphere since close to home but I will travel now so I don’t have to deal with ignorance
