Dr Friel has been taking care of our family for over 35 years. He has saved the day so many times!!! This past week, our Yorkie was not doing well & we were very concerned. We drove down from Rangeley & he somehow made time to operate on her, as our now local vet was not able to perform the procedure. He removed 12 stones from her bladder. Everything went well & she is doing great!! Pics of Mercedes & her sister Ferrari are below. Dr Friel is truly a saint!!! Thank you again so much for everything everyone @ Westbrook Animal Hospital has done & they do every day!!!

Welcome to Westbrook Animal Hospital
Westbrook Animal Hospital, located at 189 Pride St, Westbrook, ME 04092, USA, has been serving the local community as a Pet Hospital for many years. Testimonials from pet owners offer a glimpse into the services and environment of this clinic, presenting both long-term positive experiences and more recent concerns that potential clients should consider.
One long-standing client has entrusted the care of their family pets to Westbrook Animal Hospital and Dr. Friel for over 35 years. This extensive relationship speaks to a history of reliable and dedicated service. The reviewer recounts numerous instances where Dr. Friel has "saved the day," highlighting a level of expertise and commitment that has fostered loyalty over decades. A recent example provided is the case of their Yorkie who was unwell and required surgery to remove 12 bladder stones. Despite the client traveling from Rangeley, Dr. Friel "somehow made time" to perform the procedure, which their local vet was unable to do. The successful outcome of the surgery and the dog's recovery are a testament to Dr. Friel's surgical skills and the hospital's ability to handle urgent and complex cases, at least in some instances. The reviewer's description of Dr. Friel as "truly a saint" underscores the deep gratitude and trust they have in him and the entire team at Westbrook Animal Hospital.
However, a more recent review offers a contrasting perspective, particularly concerning the care of cats and more complex medical conditions. This reviewer found Westbrook Animal Hospital to be an "affordable place to bring your pet for routine vaccinations." This suggests that the clinic does offer basic preventative care services at a reasonable cost, which could be a significant factor for pet owners seeking routine care on a budget.
Despite the affordability for routine vaccinations, this reviewer explicitly states that they "would not recommend this place if your pet has any chronic or acute conditions, especially if your pet is a cat." This is a serious concern for pet owners dealing with more significant health issues in their animals. The reviewer expressed a feeling that the staff may not be particularly fond of or knowledgeable about cats, stating, "I kind of got the vibe they don't even really like cats, let alone know how to care for them." This perception led the reviewer to seek care for their cats at "The Cat Doctor" instead, where they reported a "night and day experience," implying a significantly higher level of expertise and care for felines.
Based on these two reviews, it is difficult to form a complete picture of the environment and the full spectrum of services offered at Westbrook Animal Hospital. The positive review emphasizes Dr. Friel's long-standing dedication and ability to handle complex surgical cases in dogs, suggesting a level of expertise in canine medicine and surgery. The negative review, however, raises concerns about the clinic's ability to handle chronic or acute conditions, especially in cats, and suggests a potential lack of comfort or expertise in feline medicine.
The services likely offered at Westbrook Animal Hospital, based on the reviews, include:
- Routine Vaccinations: Identified as an affordable service.
- General Wellness Exams: Likely part of routine care.
- Surgical Procedures: Demonstrated by the successful bladder stone removal in a Yorkie.
- Treatment of Acute Conditions (in some cases): The Yorkie's case suggests the ability to handle some acute issues, at least in canine patients.
- Long-Term Care: Evidenced by the 35+ year relationship with a client.
However, the negative review suggests potential limitations or a lack of specialization in:
- Care for Chronic Conditions: Not recommended by one reviewer.
- Feline Medicine: Concerns raised about the staff's affinity for and knowledge of cat care.
- Diagnosis and Treatment of Complex Issues (potentially, based on the need for surgery in the Yorkie's case): While surgery was performed, the context of the negative review suggests caution for complex cases, especially in cats.
Information regarding specific features of the clinic, such as advanced diagnostic equipment or specialized facilities, is not provided in the reviews. Similarly, there is no mention of any promotional offers, new client discounts, or wellness plans. To obtain this information, it would be best to contact Westbrook Animal Hospital directly at (207) 797-4747 or +1 207-797-4747.
In conclusion, Westbrook Animal Hospital in Westbrook, ME, presents a complex picture based on the available customer feedback. While Dr. Friel has a long history of dedicated service and has successfully handled significant medical and surgical cases for some clients, particularly with dogs, more recent feedback raises concerns about the clinic's ability to care for cats and manage chronic or acute conditions effectively. Local users considering Westbrook Animal Hospital should weigh these differing experiences. For routine vaccinations, the clinic may be an affordable option. However, for pet owners with cats or animals with complex health issues, it would be prudent to inquire further about the clinic's expertise and approach or consider seeking a veterinarian with more specialized experience in those areas. The long-term positive experience of one client cannot be discounted, but the specific concerns raised in the other review warrant careful consideration.

May 14, 2025 · David ReynoldsThis is an affordable place to bring your pet for routine vaccinations. I would not recommend this place if your pet has any chronic or acute conditions, especially if your pet is a cat. I kind of got the vibe they don't even really like cats, let alone know how to care for them. Took both my cats to The Cat Doctor instead and it's been a night and day experience.

Mar 05, 2025 · Penny MarsilioInsightful and exceptional veterinary care. We feel so lucky to have found Westbrook Animal Hospital! From dental cleanings and annual check ups to advising us on the best approach for caring for an older, arthritic dog, Dr. Friel has done a tremendous job providing veterinary care to our dogs. He is knowledgeable and plugged into the latest developments in veterinary medicine, which gives us the peace mind we are providing the best care for our animals. Dr. Friel has great bedside manner, good availability for appointments, and is reasonably priced. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a vet.
Feb 11, 2025 · Kristin BradyOh my gosh I don't even know where to begin. I absolutely love Dr.Friel. I hate it that I can't go in and actually talk to him and everything is translated through the assistance. So communication is hard enough a third parties even worse as everyone knows. I mean the teeth cleaning is that incredible low price. Regular vet bills are hardly in my budget. They take so much time explaining their prices are so good they care about their clients thank you Mike for all your help and all you're explaining and understanding the other day. I couldn't be happier. Thank you very much!
