Comprehensive Services

Village Veterinary offers a wide array of services designed to meet the diverse needs of dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, pocket pets (such as mice, rats, hamsters, and guinea pigs), and small birds. Their approach is truly integrative, combining state-of-the-art traditional medicine with a full range of holistic therapies.

  • Traditional Medical and Surgical Services: Village Veterinary is a full-service small animal hospital equipped to handle a wide variety of medical conditions. They provide routine check-ups, vaccinations, and comprehensive medical assistance. Their surgical capabilities include spays, neuters, growth removals, and various soft tissue surgeries. For more complex orthopedic procedures, such as TPLO, they collaborate with board-certified surgeons like Dr. Mark House, Dipl. ACVS.
  • Diagnostic Capabilities: To ensure quick and accurate diagnoses, Village Veterinary is equipped with an in-house laboratory for fast blood work and urine results, digital radiography (low-frequency human-quality exposure), and on-site ultrasound with remote specialist interpretation. For more in-depth diagnostics, they work with accredited and fully integrated reference laboratories. They also offer Cardiopet for EKG analysis by cardiologists via telephone transmission and can provide referrals to tertiary care centers for CAT scans and MRIs when necessary.
  • Dental Care: They perform comprehensive dentistries, including cleanings and extractions, to maintain your pet's oral health.
  • Holistic and Integrative Therapies: This is where Village Veterinary truly stands out. Dr. Julie Matthews, the practice owner, is certified in Acupuncture (CVA by the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society) and Homeopathy (CVH by the Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy). She is also skilled in Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation (VOM), a form of chiropractic for animals. Additionally, they offer Chinese Herbal Therapy and Cold Laser Therapy (Companion laser), which is noted as one of their most popular services. This integrative approach ensures that pets receive optimal care that considers their entire well-being.
  • Preventive Care: A strong emphasis is placed on preventive services, including protection against parasites like heartworms, fleas, and ticks, and regular exams and vaccinations to keep pets healthy.
  • Other Services: The hospital also provides hospitalization, medicated baths and dips for skin conditions, microchipping, and a pharmacy stocking most medications and herbs, as well as Royal Canin, Hills, and Purina prescription diets. While they do not offer routine boarding or grooming due to limited space, they will board cats needing medication or treatment that a routine kennel cannot handle and perform grooming for pets requiring sedation or special care.
  • Emergency and After-Hours Care: For after-hours emergencies, Village Veterinary refers clients to local emergency centers, such as Port City in Newington, NH, and Saco, ME.

Dr Matthews is absolutely amazing. I feel like her blend of traditional and holistic approaches means that she looks for the root cause before prescribing medications. Very different from other experiences I’ve had with veterinarians! Highly recommend.

I recently moved to the area and needed a new vet for my best friend. I had her paperwork sent from the previous vet and scheduled her wellness appointment, understandably several months out. My girl had an issue the required more immediate attention. The staff got her right in. As we waited in the exam room with the door open, and my dog clearly under stress, every staff member who walked by stopped in to say something kind to her to relive her anxiety. Dr Mathews came in with a calm professional competence that instantly put us more at ease. She thoroughly and gently examined Lucy, found the problem and, along with my input (unheard of), figured a treatment plan. In the following days, I had 2 follow up calls from Dr Mathews and a very quick response from Zoey (forgive me if I misspelled it) when I had a question. My little partner is my treasure, my medicine, my bff and deserves only the best of care and we found it. I could not recommend Village Vet any higher. I wish I could find a Dr that treats humans with the same care and respect.

Hi brought my German shorthaired pointer to them when he had some accidents and they were amazing! Dr. Matthews has the perfect balance of holistic and western medicine mindset. The staff is all very attentive and caring. I don’t live close now but it’s worth the drive!
