This veterinary practice is located inside Petco. I told my dog's normal vet that we were coming here for blood work since they charge about half as much for the same tests. She supported this option and had heard good things about the services they offer. As soon as I booked the appointment online I got a coupon for a free exam through my email. I was able to use this coupon and the staff found a bundle deal for the lab work I requested so I spent less than $300 for a wellness exam and comprehensive lab diagnostics (including more in-depth tests like thyroid and lymes). Turn-around time is a few days for lab work which is pretty fast even though they don't do any testing in-house. They're also open on Saturdays. I highly recommend Vetco for any general pet wellness needs (not emergency). Their Sunday vaccination clinics are also a great tool when you need that last-minute Bordatella or Lepto for dog parks.

Welcome to Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital
Positioned conveniently within the "Pet Hospital" category, **Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital** in Clive, IA, offers accessible and comprehensive veterinary services. Located at 7333 Buffalo Rd, Clive, IA 50324, inside a Petco store, this hospital aims to provide high-quality care that is both convenient and often more affordable than traditional standalone veterinary clinics. The clinic can be reached at (515) 446-2953.
The unique aspect of **Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital** is its integration within a Petco retail store. This strategic placement offers unparalleled convenience for pet owners, allowing them to combine veterinary visits with their regular pet supply shopping. While the specific layout of the Clive location isn't detailed, Vetco Total Care hospitals typically feature dedicated, modern veterinary spaces within the larger retail environment. This means a clean and functional clinical area equipped for examinations, diagnostics, and procedures, separate from the main retail floor but easily accessible. The environment is designed for efficiency, focusing on streamlined appointments. The presence within a retail store also means convenient parking is generally available. Operating hours often extend into weekends, making it easier for pet owners with busy schedules to bring their companions in for care, as highlighted by the mention of being "open on Saturdays" and "Sunday vaccination clinics." This in-store model, however, means it's generally not set up for overnight stays or emergency on-call services, as emphasized by their distinction from emergency veterinary facilities.
**Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital** provides a comprehensive range of veterinary services, distinguishing itself from its Vetco Vaccination Clinic counterparts (which focus solely on preventative care). As a "Total Care" hospital, it offers more extensive medical and surgical capabilities. Their service offerings include:
- Routine Wellness and Preventative Care: This foundational aspect covers comprehensive nose-to-tail exams, tailored **vaccinations** (including common canine and feline immunizations like rabies, distemper, parvovirus, leptospirosis, and bordetella), and crucial parasite prevention (flea, tick, and heartworm prevention, as well as testing). **Microchipping** services are also available for permanent pet identification.
- Diagnostic Services: The hospital is equipped with modern diagnostic tools to accurately assess pet health. These include **digital X-rays** and **ultrasound (including Butterfly IQ+ handheld ultrasound imaging)** for detailed internal imaging. They utilize **on-site labs** for routine blood chemistry panels, urinalysis, fecal testing, and specialized tests like thyroid and Lyme disease, with a relatively fast "turn-around time" for lab work, even if some tests are sent out. They also leverage **Vetology Radiograph Interpretation AI** for enhanced accuracy in reading X-rays.
- Medical Care for Sick Pets: They manage common ailments such as vomiting, diarrhea, and other non-emergency sick visits. They also offer services in **dermatology** for skin conditions.
- Surgical Services: **Vetco Total Care Hospitals** perform a range of surgical procedures, including routine **spay and neuter surgeries**, as well as other **outpatient surgeries** like mass removals and foreign body removals. They have a dedicated **surgical suite** for these procedures.
- Dental Care: Comprehensive **dentistry** services are provided, including professional dental cleanings and extractions, complemented by **dental X-rays** for thorough oral health assessment.
- Behavioral and Nutritional Consultations: They offer evaluations for pet behavior and anxiety, along with expert advice on pet nutrition to support overall health and well-being.
- Pharmacy Services: An in-house pharmacy ensures convenient access to necessary prescribed medications, and they can also assist with ordering specialized pet foods and products.
It's important to note that while comprehensive for general wellness and many medical needs, **Vetco Total Care Hospitals** typically do not handle overnight stays or emergency on-call situations, directing those critical cases to specialized emergency veterinary hospitals.
**Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital** distinguishes itself with several key features that appeal to pet owners seeking convenient and cost-effective veterinary care. One of the most frequently praised aspects is their **transparent pricing and affordability**. Customers explicitly mention that they "charge about half as much for the same tests" compared to traditional vets, and the staff is lauded for being "very thorough and tell you upfront what the charges will be and options." This commitment to financial transparency is a significant advantage, particularly for routine wellness and diagnostic needs. The availability of "bundle deals" for lab work further enhances cost savings.
Another strong feature is their **convenience and accessibility**. Being located inside Petco allows for easy access and combined errands. Their extended hours, including Saturdays and Sunday vaccination clinics, cater to pet owners with demanding schedules. The ability to book appointments online simplifies the process, and the quick "turn-around time" for lab results is highly valued.
The quality of the veterinary team is also a consistent positive. Customers describe the "vet tech and veterinarian are always stellar in service, caring about animals and well-informed!" The experience with Dr. Aislinn Ophoff, for example, is highlighted as "FANTASTIC!!!", demonstrating empathy, clear communication, and excellent surgical outcomes even for non-regular patients in an urgent situation. The team's ability to keep clients informed and provide reassurance, including post-operative pictures, is highly appreciated.
However, it is important to acknowledge that experiences can vary. One review describes a profoundly distressing experience where the owner felt a lack of empathy and support during a difficult time with their dog's heart failure, alongside perceived operational inefficiencies like long waits. This suggests that while overall the staff is highly praised, individual interactions can be subjective and highlight the critical need for consistent compassionate communication, especially in sensitive situations. The "priced me out of care" comment, despite the general affordability, suggests that for very complex or ongoing conditions, even cost-effective options can still be a financial burden for some pet owners.
**Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital** actively promotes its services through various offers and a focus on value. A notable promotional strategy includes providing **coupons for a free exam** upon booking an aintment online, which is a significant incentive for new clients. They frequently offer various **bundle deals** for services like lab work and vaccine packages, designed to provide comprehensive care at a reduced cost. Seasonal promotions, such as free heartworm tests with the purchase of a year's supply of preventatives, or free FIV, FeLV & heartworm tests with certain product purchases, are common. They also offer **free microchipping with a Best Value vaccine package** and a **"Free First Vet Exam"** for new clients. These promotions, combined with their transparent pricing, aim to make essential pet healthcare more accessible to the community.
Their "Sunday vaccination clinics" are also a key promotional tool, providing a convenient and often lower-cost option for routine vaccinations, catering to pet owners who might need "last-minute Bordatella or Lepto for dog parks." By focusing on general wellness needs and explicitly stating they are "not emergency" services, they manage client expectations while emphasizing their strength in preventative and routine care. The model of being located inside Petco means they benefit from the retail store's foot traffic and visibility, naturally extending their reach into the pet-owning community. Their commitment to making high-quality veterinary care "more accessible to pets in your community" is a core part of their mission, leveraging their nationwide presence to provide standardized, affordable care.

May 11, 2025 · MelindaThis pet service is very thorough and tell you upfront what the charges will be and options. Unfortunately, when I pay more for my cat than an MD, it's priced me out of care. Conversely, the vet tech and veterinarian are always stellar in service, caring about animals and well-informed!
Mar 19, 2025 · Bea VanniWe had an appointment for today at 4:00 to update vaccines for our 2 dogs. Our dogs are both older, and one is extremely large at 150 lbs, making transportation difficult as it is harder now to get him in and out of the car. When my husband arrived for the appointment a few minutes early, the clinic was closed. The Petco cashier stated that someone was sick today so they didn't open. Apparently we weren't the only people who weren't even given the courtesy of a phone call to cancel the appointment either. We will definitely be taking our dogs elsewhere for their vaccinations.
Jan 25, 2025 · Branwen GrahamDr. Anderson is amazing. She was patient with me and my cat. It was an emotional time for me and she understood and explained everything and took the time for me to calm down and ask questions. I showed up early and the staff let us into a room and got us comfortable well before our appointment, they answered any questions and helped us get comfortable
Dec 06, 2024 · TianaEveryone at the Clive office was wonderful and caring. I brought in a new stray kitten and they were very gentle and thorough with getting him all checked over, giving shots and taking blood, and even removed a tick! The vet tech (sorry I forgot her name!) and Dr. Laura Andersen-Koester are both very good at what they do, and it definitely shows that they love animals and what they do. The prices are very reasonable as well.
