Since VCA and VCA Airline Blvd won't answer me and keep hiding my comments, here we go. I also have all paperwork to support this review. Dr Carow was left in charge of my pup that was only in for a spay on Nov 5 2024. Shortly after drop-off I found out she is negligent, incompetent and dangerous. She said she weighed my pup before surgery and was 59.5 lbs. Wrong. Carow even told me " yes I weighed her and it was 19.5 kg". 19.5 kg is only 43 lbs and that still wasn't right at the time. Again, I have all supporting documents for this. My dog was given meds for a dog almost 20 lbs heavier, twice. Why twice? Because Carow told me the crate my pup was going in was NOT seated on the stand properly. So when she tried putting a drugged up dog in a crate, she couldn't support the 41.5 lb animal when it kicked which resulted in my pups Achilles Tendon getting cut and cardiac arrhythmia from over medicating her twice since now they had to stop the bleeding. Also verified by a third party vet. Instead of them doing the right thing and transporting her to a competent vet immediately, I get a call to do it. Thankfully Cove treated my animal with respect. I've had to take time away from work due to her needing 10 pills 3x a day. I'm the one doing her PT since the splint is finally off. I guess they think it's ok since they did bare minimum and paid the bill for what they did. They've offered no compensation for my time away from work because of what Carow did either. Honestly, Carow never apologized for her actions that resulted in this. A complaint is being filed with the vet board and she has been terminated as our vet. The staff there is amazing, but Carow, I would not recommend her or VCA to anyone. They over charge, hide negative comments and if you do a little research, VCA as a whole, is accused of abusing a lot of animals coast to coast and still tries to make clients pay. Thankfully there are much better vets, all the way around, in this area. Use VCA at your own risk.

Based on recent feedback from pet owners, experiences at VCA Airline Boulevard Animal Hospital appear to vary. One customer shared a deeply concerning account regarding the care their puppy received during a spay procedure in November 2024. This review alleges negligence and incompetence on the part of a specific veterinarian, Dr. Carow, citing significant errors in weight assessment leading to alleged over-medication, a cut Achilles tendon, and cardiac arrhythmia. The reviewer also expressed dissatisfaction with the communication and lack of apology from the veterinarian involved and indicated that a complaint was being filed with the veterinary board. This individual commended the rest of the staff but strongly advised against using Dr. Carow or VCA in general, mentioning concerns about overcharging and the handling of negative feedback.
Conversely, another customer reported a positive experience during a visit to check their dog for a limp. This reviewer expressed being "very impressed" with the VCA staff, specifically mentioning Savannah and Sherreda for check-in and check-out, Tabitha for her loving interaction with their pet during the examination, and Chelsy for providing informative home care instructions. They noted that their pet, who is typically not calm during visits, was relaxed during this experience and indicated that VCA Airline Boulevard Animal Hospital would become their "forever vet."
Given these contrasting experiences, it is important for local pet owners to consider these perspectives when making decisions about their pet's care. VCA Airline Boulevard Animal Hospital, as a Pet Hospital, generally offers a range of services that typically include:

As part of the larger VCA network, VCA Airline Boulevard Animal Hospital may have access to a wide range of resources and specialists. However, the individual experiences shared by customers highlight the importance of considering the quality of care provided by specific veterinarians and staff members within the facility.
While one review raises serious concerns about the competency and conduct of a particular veterinarian, the other praises the kindness and efficiency of the support staff and the positive interaction with another veterinarian. This suggests that the overall environment and service quality might be inconsistent or dependent on the specific personnel involved in your pet's care.
At this time, no specific promotional information for VCA Airline Boulevard Animal Hospital was provided in the reviews. For details on any current offers or pricing for services, it is recommended to contact the hospital directly at the provided phone numbers.
In conclusion, VCA Airline Boulevard Animal Hospital in Portsmouth, VA, operates as a Pet Hospital offering a range of veterinary services. Customer reviews present a mixed picture, with one detailing significant negative experiences and another highlighting positive interactions with staff and a veterinarian. Jan 16, 2025 · Brian SHad to bring my baby boy, Cashew, in to get checked out for a limp. I was very impressed with VCA staff. Savannah and Sherreda were wonderful checking us in and out. Tabitha was so loving to him, even distracted him with treats while Dr. Jennifer examined him. Chelsy was very informative with home care instruction. He was so calm during the visit which is not common for him. This will be his forever vet.
Oct 29, 2024 · Vicki HudsonI’ve had an outstanding experience with this veterinary office! From the VCA app allowing 24/7 chats for questions and concerns, to the staff in office to ensure that your furry family members get seen quickly and get the highest quality care available. After my first visit, I knew that I had to make them my girl’s primary care office.
Mar 05, 2025 · Brian JensenEver since Mars Petcare took over, this place has become really, really expensive. That fact is unfortunate, because the staff is honestly really great (which is why this a two star review instead of a one star review). Do yourself a huge favor, and look to see if there are any privately owned vets in the area. While vet costs have risen quite a bit over the years, private clinics in the area seem to be a significantly better value with the same level of care that VCA provides. I’m very sad to stop going here, but I can no longer justify paying 20%-40% more compared with a private clinic.
Feb 26, 2025 · Bob SmithDr. Hubbard is AMAZING! She treats me and Sunny with so much respect and doesn’t have that cocky Dr. attitude. The vet techs here are all wonderfully as well! Highly recommend seeing her and her crew! Thank you!
