It was amazing. Embracing, calming, caring. Unlike what passes for the "usual" emergency vet clinic. My little girl was not feeling well. No emergency. Just an overly-worried dad stressing about his little girl's unhappy moment. They understood. Did not judge. Embraced. Made a safe place. The charge I paid was not nearly enough for the peace of mind and trust they afforded me. -Deeply Grateful Ladies and Gentlemen, Phoebe.

Welcome to UrgentVet - Carytown
UrgentVet - Carytown, located at 3531 Ellwood Ave, Richmond, VA 23221, is a specialized veterinary facility categorized as a "Pet Hospital" that fills a crucial need in the Richmond community's pet healthcare landscape. It operates as a dedicated urgent care clinic for dogs and cats, bridging the gap between routine daytime veterinary practices and costly 24-hour emergency hospitals. This innovative approach provides pet owners with an accessible and affordable option for their furry family members when mild illnesses or minor injuries arise outside of regular clinic hours, or when their primary vet is unavailable.
The environment at UrgentVet - Carytown is specifically designed to be as calming and stress-free as possible for pets and their owners, a significant departure from the often chaotic atmosphere of traditional emergency rooms. The clinic has invested in a "Fear-Free" approach, evident in various design elements and staff training. This includes species and size-specific exam rooms – with dedicated spaces for small dogs, large dogs, and cats – to minimize anxiety. Beyond segregated spaces, the clinic incorporates creature comforts such as non-slip flooring, dimmable lighting, soothing colors, soft music, calming pheromones, and quiet exam lift tables. The waiting room is not typically crowded, as UrgentVet encourages pets and pet parents to stay together, and offers spread-out seating for privacy. There's also a private comfort room with a separate exit, providing a serene space for difficult moments. This thoughtful environmental design, coupled with Fear-Free trained staff, aims to make every visit as comfortable and reassuring as possible, fostering a sense of safety for anxious pets and their worried owners.
UrgentVet - Carytown offers a focused range of services addressing immediate, non-life-threatening conditions. These services typically include care for common urgent cases such as vomiting and diarrhea, lameness, urinary tract infections, skin and ear conditions, eye problems, minor cuts, scrapes, lacerations, bites and stings, back pain, fracture assessments, toenail injuries, respiratory ailments, and general "just not feeling well" symptoms. They provide pain management and post-surgical issue assessments. The clinic is equipped with advanced diagnostic capabilities, including digital X-ray, ultrasound, and a full suite of in-house lab equipment, allowing for rapid and accurate diagnoses. While they do not provide preventative or general care, nor overnight hospitalization, approximately 90% of the patients they see are treated on-site and are able to return home, with detailed referral letters and records promptly provided to the pet's regular veterinarian to ensure continuity of care. They also offer end-of-life care, providing compassionate support during difficult times.
A key feature of UrgentVet - Carytown is its accessibility and convenience. They operate with extended hours, typically 3 PM to 11 PM Monday through Friday, 10 AM to 8 PM on Saturdays and Sundays, and 12 PM to 8 PM on all holidays. This ensures that pet owners have a reliable option for urgent needs when their primary vet is closed. Clients have the option to save their spot online, which helps manage wait times, or simply walk in. This hybrid approach to appointments caters to both planned urgent needs and unexpected issues. Another significant feature, and one often highlighted by grateful clients, is the affordability of their services. UrgentVet positions itself as a cost-effective alternative to traditional emergency veterinary hospitals, offering savings that can be up to 40% less for comparable urgent care services. The highly compassionate and attentive staff, such as technicians Natalie and Precious mentioned in reviews, are also a defining characteristic, providing consistent care and ensuring pets remain calm and feel safe throughout their visit. The team's understanding and non-judgmental approach provide immense peace of mind to worried pet parents.
While primarily a service provider, UrgentVet - Carytown, as a "Pet Hospital" category listing, also facilitates access to necessary medical goods. This primarily involves the dispensing of prescription medications directly related to the urgent conditions they treat. They maintain an in-house pharmacy to provide immediate access to treatments. This direct provision of necessary pharmaceuticals ensures that pets can begin their recovery process without delay after being seen at the clinic. Furthermore, their cloud-based medical record-keeping software allows for seamless communication with a pet's regular veterinarian, facilitating continuity of care and the transfer of information regarding any dispensed medications or ongoing needs.
For promotional efforts, UrgentVet - Carytown emphasizes its core value proposition: providing convenient, compassionate, and affordable urgent veterinary care. Their phone number, (804) 362-0202 or +1 804-362-0202, is the primary contact for inquiries and scheduling. Key promotional messages would highlight their accessible hours (evenings, weekends, and holidays), the ability to save a spot online or walk in, and the significant cost savings compared to traditional emergency vets. They would undoubtedly leverage positive customer testimonials that speak to the caring nature of the staff, the calming environment, and the peace of mind they offer. Marketing might target pet owners who have experienced long waits or high costs at emergency clinics, or those whose regular vets have limited after-hours availability. The "Fear-Free" certification and the thoughtful design of their clinic are strong selling points, reassuring owners that their anxious pets will receive gentle handling. UrgentVet - Carytown positions itself as the reliable and empathetic solution for those moments when your pet "just isn't feeling well" but doesn't require critical, overnight emergency intervention, ensuring quality care is always within reach.

Mar 14, 2025 · Dana JosephEveryone was fantastic and caring. They were busy and had a bit of a wait but they offered the same level of care and attention to detail to every patient that was there during our time. The care provided was well worth the wait. Natalie and Precious (our technicians)kept our pet calm and and feeling safe every step of the way and we left feeling confident in our home care instructions. Much less expensive than other urgent care vet practices I've been to in town as well.
Feb 19, 2025 · andrew westbrookVery thankful for this staff! They completed testing + imaging to confirm that our girl had ingested unknown materials & had what seemed to be a complete intestinal obstruction with concern for perforation due to the shape/size. They very quickly referred us to the local vet ER for surgery. They sent all imaging and testing, so the ER was able to quickly and promptly plan/complete surgery since all testing had been completed by the UrgentVet team prior to her arrival to the ER. Yes, this is more expensive than a normal primary care vet. However, they were very upfront about their pricing & will go over everything with you prior to initiating treatment. They also gave great tips about filing claims with our pet insurance. Without their care, the surgery would have likely taken much longer to get completed. Since it was caught in time, there were no further complications than just the obstruction itself. They made our timid girl incredibly comfortable the entire time! ❤️
Jan 03, 2025 · Grace BurmanWe went to the facility when our dog became ill over a holiday weekend. The online appointment reservation time is easy to use and so great because it saves a long office wait before being seen. This was a big plus as Sandy had stomach issues and we were worried about her having to wait. Once you arrive there is an i pad to alert the staff that you have arrived. The staff was very professional, and quick to respond once we notified we had arrived. The wait room and the exam room were both very clean, bright and calming. The vet assistant was professional, caring, and able to explain everything she was doing and why. She kept us apprised of what was occuring and when the Vet would be in. The vet was very kind and patient, explaining everything that was needed and our options. Before any test were performed the vet assistant provided a detailed explanation of all the charges that would go with each possible procedure and outcome leaving the final decision to us. This was very nice since many facilities do not give you options and do not provide financial disclosure by procedure before the perform them. After the test and our decisions check out and payment was very easy. It was all done in the exam room. This was nice since you did not have to move our dog back out to a desk in a waiting room. Additionally, it is very nice that they forward all records directly to our regular vet allowing easy follow up. That was a big plus! Sandy actually loved all the staff and is now feeling much better. I cannot thank everyone here enough. If you four legged friend is not feeling well I highly recommend this clinic.
Jan 01, 2025 · tanya mayesI came to urgent vet today so my stray kitty could be seen (he’s a stray who adopted us but lives outside full time). He has an abscess and I was very worried about how he would react to the vet and also how he’d be treated. He’s a little rough around the edges but the vet and our vet tech, Precious, were PHENOMENAL. I was very anxious and she was so kind to me and my kitty. He’s was able to be seen without being sedated and they showed him so much love and care. We were also seen promptly and the service was very affordable.
