Had a really hard time finding place for my girlfriend to take her rabbit to have a check up and nails trimmed. Called this place and they were able to fit me in today on the spot! Very easy no hassle, came in filled out some paper work to get the rabbit in there system! They saw him earlier than the time we were scheduled, and the vet gave us several great tips and seemed very very well informed on the rabbit! Trimmed the nails and did a full check up within 10-30 minutes! Very please and happy. Will definitely be back thanks for taking care of our fur baby! 10/10 would recommend !

Welcome to Southside Animal Hospital
Southside Animal Hospital, located at 3601 S Main St, Winston-Salem, NC 27127, USA, is a highly regarded pet hospital that has been serving the local community with dedicated and comprehensive veterinary care since its founding in 1989 by Dr. Dennis Emerson. As a full-service animal hospital, Southside Animal Hospital is committed to providing a wide array of medical, surgical, and preventative services for companion animals, ensuring the health and happiness of pets in Winston-Salem and its surrounding areas. Their approach emphasizes not only advanced medical practices but also a deep understanding of the unique needs of each animal and their owner.
The environment at Southside Animal Hospital is designed to be welcoming and reassuring for both pets and their human companions. While specific architectural details are not extensively documented, the reviews suggest an atmosphere that prioritizes comfort and efficiency. The ability to "fit in" a rabbit for a check-up and nail trim on the spot indicates a flexible and accommodating front office staff, minimizing waiting times and potential stress for anxious pets. The overall impression conveyed is one of professionalism combined with a genuine care for animals, creating a space where even reactive or scared pets can eventually feel at ease, as highlighted by a customer whose dog, Tinsley, became "friends" with the team after a visit. Cleanliness, organization, and a calm ambiance are essential for a veterinary setting, and Southside Animal Hospital appears to deliver on these fronts, fostering a positive experience for all visitors.
Southside Animal Hospital offers a broad spectrum of veterinary services, catering to a diverse clientele of pets. Their services span from essential preventative care to advanced medical and surgical procedures. Key offerings include **wellness exams** tailored to detect and prevent health issues early, as well as comprehensive **vaccination programs** to protect pets from common and life-threatening diseases. They provide extensive **parasite prevention and control**, addressing internal and external parasites such as heartworms, fleas, and ticks, which are crucial for year-round pet health. **Dentistry** is a significant service, encompassing thorough dental cleanings, examinations, and addressing issues like plaque buildup, ensuring optimal oral health.
Beyond routine care, Southside Animal Hospital is equipped to handle more complex medical needs. Their **diagnostic services** include **in-house laboratory testing** for immediate results on blood work, urinalysis, and fecal exams, as well as advanced **radiology (X-rays)** for non-invasive internal imaging. They also offer **surgical procedures**, from routine spays and neuters to more involved soft tissue surgeries, performed with a focus on safety and effective pain management. For pets facing behavioral challenges, the hospital provides **behavior management consultations** to help correct unwanted behaviors and improve the bond between pets and owners. Additionally, they offer **nutritional counseling** to guide pet owners in making informed dietary choices, addressing special dietary needs, weight management, and age-related nutrition. Other services include **microchipping**, **grooming (pet baths and nail trimming)**, and support for **pet allergies and skin conditions**.
A notable feature of Southside Animal Hospital, which sets it apart for many local users, is its expertise in **exotic pet care**. Unlike many general veterinary practices that primarily focus on dogs and cats, Southside Animal Hospital extends its compassionate care to a variety of unique companions, including **rabbits, ferrets, birds, reptiles, and "pocket pets" like mice, hamsters, and hedgehogs**. This specialized knowledge, particularly highlighted by the positive experience with the rabbit check-up, makes them a vital resource for owners of less common pets who often struggle to find qualified veterinary attention. Dr. Emerson himself has a stated interest in treating birds, reptiles, and exotic pets, further solidifying the hospital's capability in this niche. The comprehensive check-up and valuable tips provided for the rabbit demonstrate their in-depth understanding of these animals' specific needs, which is a major advantage for exotic pet owners in the Winston-Salem area.
The team at Southside Animal Hospital is consistently praised for their professionalism, knowledge, and genuine compassion. Reviews emphasize the friendly and well-informed staff who go the extra mile to make pets feel comfortable, even those with anxiety or reactivity towards vet visits. The ability to quickly accommodate urgent needs, as seen with the same-day rabbit appointment, highlights their efficiency and responsiveness. The personalized care and detailed explanations provided by the veterinarians empower pet owners to make informed decisions about their pets' health. The hospital's commitment to supporting local animal adoption and rescue programs, as well as involvement in wildlife rehabilitation, further reflects their dedication to animal welfare beyond their clinic doors.
In terms of promotional information, Southside Animal Hospital actively engages with its community through various offers. They have a "Refer a Friend" program where both the referrer and the new client receive a $50 credit after the new client's first visit, fostering a sense of community and rewarding their loyal customer base. They also offer **rebates on specific parasite prevention medications**, such as Trifexis and Interceptor Plus, and Seresto collars, providing financial incentives for clients to maintain their pets' preventative health regimens. Furthermore, they have an upgraded online store that allows for quick and easy ordering of pet food and medications, with linked pet records and prescriptions, along with potential AutoShip discounts and promotions on products, enhancing convenience and affordability for pet owners.

Sep 14, 2024 · Angie CaudleMy dog was on the verge of dying she wasn’t eating for days throwing up foam pooping blood. Went to southside and they came thru at a reasonable price and went to work right away. The price was far more better than all the places I called as far as $200. I recommend southside animal hospital to anyone that has any animals. I wish I could rate them 10 stars if possible thank u southside ur a life saver
May 01, 2025 · Aly Woodruffthe vet is so inconsiderate of peoples feelings when losing a pet. and they drag out the process. no one wants to sit here for an hour and wait for them to put your animal down when they’re suffering. they scam you out of your money just putting shots into your pet not telling you what’s wrong with it and not helpful in anyway. the male doctor here is so rude and just goes off a “plan” he has for your animal and it ends up costing you thousands of dollars for nothing to get better. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS VET.
