They focus on personalized care, ensuring that each animal receives the attention and treatment tailored to their specific needs.

Services Offered

Southside Animal Hospital offers a broad spectrum of veterinary services, catering to dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, birds, reptiles, and "pocket pets" such as mice, hamsters, and hedgehogs. Their goal is to provide full-service care, from preventative health measures to the treatment of illnesses and injuries. Key services include:

  • Wellness and Prevention: This encompasses comprehensive physical exams, parasite checks, and crucial vaccinations for diseases like rabies, leukemia, parvovirus, and distemper.
  • Dentistry: Just like humans, pets require regular dental care. Services include thorough teeth cleanings to remove plaque and ensure proper oral health.
  • Surgery: The hospital provides state-of-the-art veterinary surgical procedures, utilizing high levels of medical technology and experienced, highly trained surgeons.
  • X-rays (Radiology): As a non-invasive diagnostic tool, X-rays allow veterinarians to look inside the body and create images of various organs, aiding in accurate diagnoses.
  • Spay and Neuter: These routine procedures are offered to promote pet health and control pet overpopulation.
  • Microchipping: This vital service helps in identifying and reuniting lost pets with their owners.
  • Nutritional Counseling: The veterinary team provides guidance on appropriate diets for pets of all ages and health conditions, including specialized diets for those with long-term health issues or for risk reduction.
  • Behavior Management: For pets exhibiting behavioral problems, the hospital offers consultations to help correct unwanted behaviors and enrich the lives of both pets and owners.
  • Onsite Diagnostics: A wide variety of in-house diagnostic testing is available, utilizing state-of-the-art technology to ensure the highest level of care and accurate diagnoses.
  • Grooming: This service contributes to the overall hygiene and well-being of pets.

Features and Expertise

Dr. Dennis Emerson brings over 25 years of experience in companion animal medicine in Winston-Salem. He earned his Veterinary degree from Louisiana State University and has a special interest in internal medicine, alongside handling both medical and surgical cases. His expertise extends beyond common pets to include birds, reptiles, and exotic animals, making Southside Animal Hospital a versatile option for pet owners with diverse animal companions.

A notable feature highlighted by customer reviews is the compassionate and attentive nature of Dr. Emerson and his staff. One glowing review mentions Dr. Emerson's practice of calling and checking on severely ill pets the day after their visit, demonstrating a profound level of care and dedication. The staff is consistently described as "sweet as can be" and willing to go above and beyond to help pet owners and care for their "fur babies." This personalized attention and evident love for animals are significant aspects of their service.

However, an objective look also includes varied experiences. One customer, while acknowledging Dr. Emerson's long-term treatment for their dogs' allergies, expressed dissatisfaction after a recent visit where their dog was in significant pain without pain medication provided, indicating that experiences can sometimes fall short of expectations, particularly in managing post-treatment comfort for pets with chronic conditions.

Promotional Information

Southside Animal Hospital regularly offers promotions to make veterinary care more accessible to pet owners. One prominent offering is their "Refer a Friend" program, where both the referring client and the new client receive a $50 credit after the new client's first visit. This encourages community engagement and rewards loyal patrons. Additionally, the hospital provides rebates on specific parasite prevention products. For instance, purchasing a 6-month supply of Trifexis may qualify for a $10 rebate, while a 12-month supply could yield a $30 rebate. Similarly, a 12-month supply of Interceptor Plus might offer a $15 rebate, and Seresto purchases could come with a $15 mail-in rebate. These promotions help pet owners manage the costs of essential preventive care.

My poor dogs have really bad allergies and I have tried everything to help them get better. Dr Emersonhas been treating my dogs for ear infections every four weeks this last trip I don’t know what happened but my little dog is in so much pain and they didn’t send any kind of pain medication home with him I’m not very satisfied at this point with them

I brought my cat in for what I had been told was a chronic upper respitory infection by another vet after recently losing another cat to pneumonia. I was quickly informed it has nothing to do with a respitory infection and everything to do with bad teeth and that infection reaching the sinus cavity. Surgery was quickly scheduled and they took care of my 15 year old pet who now seems years younger by improved health. It wasn't cheap but was worth it.
