Dr. Rivers is amazing! She helped my cat Skittles by repairing as much damage as she could from previous abuse. She gave me 4 years with my amazing girl that we otherwise never would’ve had. When it came time to cross the Rainbow Bridge Dr. Rivers was there by my side comforting me letting me know I had support. Somerset Vet sent me a personalized candle and a poem after Skittles passed which was very touching. With my current cat Raena she’s also been wonderful. I apparently attract medically needy animals and she figured out Raena is allergic to fish! We’re on a special diet and all is well!

Environment of Care: Designed for Comfort and Reduced Stress

The environment at Somerset Veterinary Hospital, across its various locations, is meticulously designed with a clear emphasis on creating a positive, low-stress experience for pets and their owners. As a "Pet Hospital" dedicated to being Fear Free certified and AAHA accredited, these clinics go beyond standard amenities. While specific architectural details might vary by location, the core environmental principles and features include:

  • Fear Free Certification: This is a defining characteristic. It signifies that the clinic employs specific techniques and modalities to actively reduce fear, anxiety, and stress (FAS) in pets. This can involve using calming pheromones, providing non-slip surfaces, offering treats and positive reinforcement, and implementing gentle handling techniques. Staff are trained to recognize and respond to animal behavioral cues to minimize discomfort during visits, ensuring a more positive experience for the animal.

  • AAHA Accreditation: The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) accreditation is a voluntary standard that signifies a hospital adheres to over 900 rigorous quality standards in areas like patient care, diagnostics, surgical protocols, facility cleanliness, and team training. This commitment to excellence translates into a consistently high-quality and safe environment, providing peace of mind for pet owners.

  • Welcoming and Clean Spaces: All areas, from the reception and waiting rooms to examination rooms and surgical suites, are maintained to stringent standards of cleanliness and hygiene. Waiting areas are often designed to be calming, potentially with separate zones for cats and dogs to reduce inter-species stress and cater to the unique needs of different animal temperaments.

  • Advanced Diagnostic Facilities: Each location typically features an in-house laboratory for rapid blood work, urinalysis, and fecal exams. Digital X-ray and ultrasound capabilities are standard, allowing for quick and accurate internal assessments and early detection of potential health issues.

  • Sterile Surgical Suites: Dedicated operating rooms are equipped with modern anesthesia monitoring equipment and sterile instrumentation for performing a range of surgical procedures safely and efficiently, from routine to more complex interventions.

  • Dental Care Stations: Specialized areas are set up for comprehensive professional dental cleanings, extractions, and other oral health procedures, performed under anesthesia to ensure thorough and pain-free treatment.

  • Comfortable Recovery Areas: Safe and quiet spaces are provided for pets to recover from anesthesia or hospitalization, under continuous monitoring by trained veterinary staff.

  • Pocket Pet Friendly: Some locations specifically mention care for pocket pets (such as rabbits, hamsters, and guinea pigs), implying an environment adapted to their unique needs, including specialized housing and gentle handling techniques.

The overall aim of the environment is to ensure that pets feel as comfortable and secure as possible during their visit, which is crucial for accurate diagnostics, effective treatment, and fostering a positive association with veterinary care.

Services Offered: Comprehensive Care Across Life Stages

Somerset Veterinary Hospital provides a wide array of veterinary services, addressing the complete health spectrum of companion animals, from preventative care for puppies and kittens to advanced medical and surgical interventions for senior pets. As a full-service "Pet Hospital," their offerings generally include:

  • Wellness and Preventative Care: This is a cornerstone of their practice, encompassing comprehensive wellness exams, tailored vaccination protocols for dogs, cats, and certain pocket pets, and year-round parasite control (heartworm, fleas, ticks). They strongly emphasize proactive care for early detection of potential issues, promoting long-term health and reducing the need for more costly treatments later on.

  • Diagnostic Services: Utilizing their in-house laboratory and advanced imaging tools, they offer a full range of diagnostics, including blood work (complete blood count, chemistry panels), urinalysis, fecal examinations, digital radiology (X-rays), and ultrasound to accurately and efficiently diagnose illnesses and injuries.

  • Pet Dental Care: Comprehensive dental services are provided, including professional dental cleanings (scaling and polishing under anesthesia), extractions of diseased teeth, and other oral health procedures. They recognize the vital link between oral health and overall systemic well-being.

  • Surgical Procedures: They offer a broad range of surgical services, from routine spaying and neutering to more complex soft-tissue surgeries (e.g., tumor removal, foreign body removal) and orthopedic surgeries (e.g., cruciate ligament repair, patellar luxation). They adhere to stringent standards of surgical monitoring and post-operative care.

  • Internal Medicine: Diagnosis and management of various internal diseases affecting organs such as the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, and digestive system. This includes chronic disease management and therapeutic interventions for conditions like diabetes or thyroid disorders.

  • Allergy & Dermatology: Dedicated diagnosis and treatment for common pet skin conditions, itching, and allergies, which can significantly impact a pet's quality of life.

  • Ophthalmology: Addressing a range of eye conditions, from minor irritations to more severe cases requiring specialized care.

  • Pet Behavior Counseling: Assistance with diagnosing and developing treatment plans for various behavioral issues in pets, often integrated into overall wellness plans.

  • Urgent Care & Emergency Services: While not a 24/7 emergency critical care hospital, many locations offer quality same-day urgent care for illnesses or injuries during office hours. They are equipped to triage medical issues and provide immediate attention, offering guidance or referrals for after-hours emergencies to specialized facilities when necessary.

  • Pharmacy & Pet Products: On-site pharmacies provide convenient access to prescription medications, specialty foods, and preventative products, ensuring immediate access to necessary treatments.

Dr. Lindgren and the assistant Madison were very efficient and compassionate. What we thought was a life threatening scare turned out to be completely fine. We will now go to Somerset for all of our pet care needs. We truly are grateful for the care provided for our loved Candice and us as well. You definitely get the level of care that comes with this places and you can tell they truly want the best for your furry family.

I've been taking my dog to Somerset Veterinary Hospital for a while now, and I couldn't be happier with the care she receives. The staff always goes above and beyond to make her feel comfortable, and they offer plenty of treats to help her feel relaxed during visits. It's clear that they truly care about their patients, and I trust them completely with my dog's health. Highly recommend!

**Edit to add.. They did reach out and hopefully all will be right next time.** I truly love the Veterinarians here! They have all been wonderful! I definitely don’t like the feeling when I come in and feel like I am a bother to the front desk staff or the techs. Not all of them are like this, but our visit yesterday is definitely making me consider if I should find somewhere closer to home. My dog got a little rowdy yesterday when I was asking questions and the person that was helping me got very snippy. I usually bring someone with me when I bring both dogs at the same time, but my daughter had something come up. Dr. Dovenberg is who we usually see. If she has a problem with us she doesn’t show it! She is kind and compassionate and very to the point!

I lost one of my cats recently and it’s been difficult to trust people with my fur babies, they are my EVERYTHING! However, every visit I’ve had with Dr. Dovenberg specifically has been a sigh of relief. She’s never made me feel guilty for having financial constraints and she always walks me through her process in a way I can understand. She’s treated my cats and I very well every visit we’ve had. I am so grateful for her attentiveness and her comforting vibe! So happy to call her our vet!
