Dr. Partridge is an absolutely amazing, caring, personable, loving veterinary oncologist! She took amazing care of my sweet dog Jackson who was diagnosed with Lymphoma! She was very understanding, real and made sure treatment was affordable but also tolerable for him as well! And when it came time for the unexpected she sat down with us on the floor for a long period of time helping us figure out what would be the best course of action for him! She was very supportive and understanding as well as her staff!! They allowed us the time needed to be with him until his last breath and allowed us time after to gather our thoughts and say our final goodbyes! I am ever so thankful for Dr. Partridge and her team!

Welcome to Portland Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Care
Portland Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Care (PVESC), located at 739 Warren Ave, Portland, ME 04103, USA, stands as a premier multi-specialty veterinary hospital serving the greater Portland area and acting as a crucial referral center for veterinarians across Maine and beyond. This facility distinguishes itself as the only non-corporate facility of its kind in Maine, dedicated to providing advanced emergency and specialized medical care for pets. You can contact them by phone at (207) 865-8582 or (207) 878-3121.
PVESC operates a highly specialized and active environment specifically designed to handle the complex and often urgent needs of its patients. The 739 Warren Avenue location is equipped to function as a comprehensive emergency and specialty hospital, operating continuously 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year for emergency and critical care. While the current facility on Warren Avenue has been vital in its role, the practice has ambitious plans for a significant expansion to a larger, 42,000-square-foot facility in Falmouth, anticipated to open in spring 2026. This planned move underscores their commitment to continuously improving their environment and increasing their capacity to meet the growing demand for their specialized services. Despite the often high-pressure nature of emergency and specialty care, customer reviews consistently highlight a supportive and profoundly caring atmosphere. Feedback such as "The staff was so great. They all went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable leaving our dog overnight" and "Everyone was very attentive and caring" emphasizes the compassionate environment they cultivate, even during highly stressful situations. The hospital's design and operational focus are on providing a safe, exceptionally well-equipped, and reassuring space where pets can receive intensive, specialized treatment, and where owners feel fully informed and supported throughout their pet's critical care journey.
PVESC offers an extensive range of advanced veterinary services, setting itself apart from general practice clinics by exclusively focusing on emergency and highly specialized care. Their services are meticulously designed to address severe illnesses, critical injuries, and complex medical conditions in dogs and cats. Key service areas include:
Emergency and Critical Care: This is a foundational pillar of PVESC, providing immediate, 24/7/365 care for life-threatening conditions, acute accidents, and sudden, severe illnesses. Their emergency department is expertly staffed with critical care specialists and highly experienced emergency veterinarians, ensuring rapid triage, immediate stabilization, and comprehensive management of acute and critical cases.
Specialty Care: PVESC houses multiple departments with board-certified specialists who have completed years of additional, rigorous training and examinations in specific areas of veterinary medicine. These specialties include:
Oncology: As frequently highlighted by glowing customer reviews, the oncology department, featuring experts like Dr. Partridge, is highly praised for its compassionate and expert care in diagnosing and treating various cancers, including lymphoma. They are dedicated to developing effective yet tolerable treatment plans, providing unwavering support to both the pet and their family through profoundly challenging times.
Surgery: This department, led by accomplished specialists such as Dr. Marta D. Agrodnia, performs complex soft tissue, orthopedic (e.g., TPLO surgery for cruciate ligament repair), and neurologic surgeries. They utilize advanced surgical techniques and state-of-the-art equipment to ensure optimal outcomes.
Internal Medicine: Specialists in this field expertly diagnose and treat intricate internal diseases affecting various organ systems, often managing chronic conditions or navigating complex diagnostic challenges.
Cardiology: Dedicated specialists focus on the precise diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of heart conditions in pets.
Neurology: They provide advanced diagnostics and tailored treatment plans for a wide range of neurological disorders affecting the brain, spinal cord, and nervous system.
Ophthalmology: Specialists in this area concentrate on eye diseases and vision care, addressing various ocular conditions.
Dermatology: Addressing a wide spectrum of skin and ear conditions, often supported by a separate dedicated facility for specialized dermatological care.
Diagnostic Imaging: Utilizing cutting-edge tools such as digital X-rays and ultrasound, along with potentially other advanced modalities, for precise and detailed diagnosis of internal conditions.
Advanced Treatments: PVESC offers specialized and innovative therapies, including Radioactive Iodine Therapy (I-131) for hyperthyroid cats and Synovetin OA for canine osteoarthritis, showcasing their commitment to providing cutting-edge medical interventions.
In-house Pharmacy: While not a retail pharmacy in the traditional sense, PVESC, as a full-service specialty and emergency hospital, maintains a comprehensive in-house pharmacy. This pharmacy is crucial for dispensing specialized medications, often for complex conditions treated within the facility, ensuring immediate access to necessary pharmaceuticals for hospitalized patients and those requiring highly specialized prescriptions upon discharge.
Pet Loss Support: The hospital provides profoundly compassionate support and services for pet owners navigating the difficult time of saying goodbye to a beloved pet. This includes allowing ample time for final goodbyes, as noted in a deeply heartfelt customer review, demonstrating their profound understanding and respect for the human-animal bond.
PVESC stands out prominently due to several key features that underscore its unique and invaluable position in advanced veterinary care:
Team of Board-Certified Specialists: The paramount strength of PVESC lies in its exceptional team of board-certified specialists across numerous disciplines. These veterinarians have completed extensive additional training and successfully passed rigorous examinations, establishing them as unparalleled experts in their respective fields. This exceptional level of specialization ensures that pets receive the most advanced, informed, and precise care possible for complex and challenging conditions.
24/7 Emergency Care: The continuous, round-the-clock availability of emergency and critical care services is an absolutely vital resource for the entire community. It provides immediate attention and life-saving intervention for pets experiencing urgent medical needs, offering invaluable peace of mind, especially when primary veterinary clinics are closed.

This independent ownership structure allows for a potentially more personalized and patient-first philosophy compared to larger corporate chains, emphasizing local community values.

May 19, 2025 · Breana RobertsEveryone was very attentive and caring. Gizmo was immediately rushed back for care when i walked through the door. Everyone kept me well informed of his status and treatment plan. I felt he was given extra special love and treatment while he was hospitalized. Everyone that i came in contact with the evening Gizmo was admitted and throughout his stay and discharge the following day were exceptional. I cant say enough about the quality of communication and the level of compassion
May 22, 2025 · Deanna HunterHighly personalized care made me feel in control, where possible. Everybody understands how much our pets mean to us and always goes out of their way to make them comfortable. All my questions were thoroughly answered to my satisfaction. Everybody was lovely to deal with. Gail, Kelly, and Margo. I love these people! You have a smooth operation. Not once did I feel stuck or confused what my next step was.
May 08, 2025 · Denise WildfortuneEveryone was wonderful. I have taken a few of my pets there. I live over an hour away and will never go anywhere else when it comes to my pets needing care. Vaccinations at my regular vet is fine. Anything else Portland Vet only! The entire group is amazing! There is not one negative thing I could say about the office at all. The minute I arrived I was welcomed with the best group of people who understood my concerns and immediately started working to care for my dog.
Mar 17, 2025 · Jennifer BaileyAs much as I never want to end up here, emergencies happen! And the staff are lovely and efficient here! I’ve had to bring my own cat(s), but also had to bring a cat I was pet sitting one time. They were so easy to work with taking the cat owners credit card over the phone, helping me fill out paperwork as I was unsure how to fill it out being the pet sitter, etc. Yes, it’s like any emergency room where the seats are uncomfortable, it’s a little smelly and wait is long, however, with some patience the staff and doctors will take excellent care of your sick furry family member! They have xray machines, surgical consults, all the latest equipment, knowledgeable doctors etc.
