First visit with my boy, Charlie. He did great, the vet was very good and the technician was outstanding. Loved their system for getting your dog in for it's appointment, no sitting in the lobby with a bunch of dogs and having one of them not be so nice to others. Wait in your car and they call you or come out and get you. A great place to take your dog or cat to be treated just like you would.

As a Pet Hospital, Penobscot Veterinary Services offers a wide array of services designed to cater to the diverse needs of pets, primarily dogs and cats. Their commitment extends beyond basic check-ups, encompassing both preventive care and advanced medical interventions. The team, comprising four full-time veterinarians, a practice manager, an office manager, five veterinary technicians, four customer service representatives, three veterinary assistants, and an animal care attendant, is described as highly trained, experienced, and deeply devoted to animal welfare. Many staff members are cross-trained in multiple areas, ensuring a cohesive and efficient approach to pet care.

Environment and Approach to Pet Care

The philosophy at Penobscot Veterinary Services revolves around nurturing the human-pet bond and creating a harmonious relationship between people and their animal companions. Upon arrival, clients can expect to be greeted by a courteous receptionist in what is described as a clean environment with friendly doctors and caring technicians. The practice aims to make every veterinary experience a positive one, ensuring both pets and their owners are at ease. This dedication to comfort is further exemplified by their adoption of a system where clients can wait in their cars until called for their appointment, reducing potential stress for pets in a busy lobby with other animals. This considerate approach aligns with a "Fear Free" certification, which emphasizes minimizing fear, anxiety, and stress in veterinary patients.

Comprehensive Services Offered

Penobscot Veterinary Services provides an extensive range of veterinary services, addressing various aspects of pet health and well-being:

  • Wellness & Internal Medicine: This forms the cornerstone of their practice, focusing on preventive care, routine examinations, and managing internal health conditions to ensure long-term pet vitality.

  • Immunizations for Cats and Dogs: They offer comprehensive vaccination programs tailored to protect pets from common and serious diseases.

  • Dental Care: Beyond routine cleanings, their dental services include digital dental X-rays to thoroughly examine a pet's teeth and gum line, addressing potential oral health issues.

  • Diagnostic Imaging: Utilizing advanced technology, they provide general X-rays (digital radiography) to examine internal body systems for accurate diagnoses.

  • Laboratory Services: In-house laboratory capabilities enable quick and efficient diagnostic testing, crucial for timely treatment plans.

  • Surgery: The hospital is equipped to perform various surgical procedures, including spay/neuter services, and other necessary interventions.

  • Emergency Service: While they are listed as an emergency vet, online reviews indicate that their emergency services are primarily for existing patients. This highlights the importance of clarifying their current emergency protocols directly with the clinic.

  • Cardiology: Specialized care for heart-related conditions in pets.

  • Microchip Identification: Offering microchipping services to help ensure lost pets can be reunited with their owners.

  • Shock Wave Therapy: A modern therapeutic option for certain musculoskeletal conditions.

  • International Health Certificates: Assisting pet owners with the necessary documentation for international travel with their animals.

Features and Accreditations

A significant feature of Penobscot Veterinary Services is its AAHA accreditation. This distinction is voluntary and reflects a practice's commitment to meeting or exceeding the highest standards in areas such as patient care, pain management, facility and equipment, and continuing education for staff. Additionally, their Fear Free certification underscores their dedication to creating a positive and low-stress environment for pets during their visits. They also accept common treatment financing solutions like CareCredit and Scratchpay, which can help pet owners manage unexpected or large veterinary expenses by allowing payments to be spaced out over time. They also accept various pet insurance plans, advising clients that pet insurance can help significantly reduce unexpected vet costs.

Promotional Information

For new clients, Penobscot Veterinary Services typically extends a warm welcome and may offer specific promotions. Information suggests they are accepting new clients and require all prior medical history for pets before creating an account. For puppies and kittens, it's recommended to call directly to ensure proper and timely immunizations due to the time-sensitive nature of early vaccines. While specific active promotions should always be confirmed by contacting the clinic directly, some veterinary practices, including Penobscot Veterinary Services, occasionally run new client promotions. These promotions often involve a discount on a pet's initial wellness exam fee. It's always advisable to inquire about any current offers when scheduling a first appointment.

Customer Feedback and Considerations

Customer reviews paint a mixed picture. Many clients praise the staff's professionalism, kindness, and compassion. Experiences highlight the positive interactions with veterinarians and technicians, noting their thorough explanations, gentle handling of anxious pets, and accommodating nature. The system of waiting in the car for appointments is frequently lauded for reducing stress for pets. However, there has been feedback regarding emergency services for non-existing patients, with one review detailing a negative experience with a receptionist regarding emergency care for a new client. It is important for prospective clients, particularly those seeking emergency services, to understand that Penobscot Veterinary Services may prioritize existing patients for emergency care. Therefore, it is always recommended to call ahead for clarification on their emergency protocols, especially if you are not a regular patient.

In summary, Penobscot Veterinary Services in Bangor, ME, offers a comprehensive range of veterinary services within an environment designed to be as stress-free as possible for pets. Their AAHA accreditation and Fear Free certification highlight a commitment to high standards of care and compassionate treatment. While generally well-regarded for routine and specialized care, individuals seeking emergency services who are not existing clients should verify the current policy directly with the clinic to ensure their pet receives timely attention.

I called several days ago regarding an emergency with my pet, and I was met with a receptionist who had an extremely rude tone with me on the phone. I kindly started the call by asking if I could bring my kitty in as I was having an emergency situation and saw that Penobscot was listed as an emergency vet. I stated “I saw online that you are an emergency vet, and I am not a regular patient so I was wondering if I could bring my cat in” I could not even finish my sentence when she quickly cut me off by saying “no, no, if you’re not an existing patient the answer is no” and I was shocked honestly. I never leave reviews and have been contemplating leaving one these past few days but thought it was necessary due to her nasty tone. She hung up rather quickly on me and I was able to find another vet, but with my two emergency vet situations so far this place has been very against me getting any care from them so I will not be calling Penobscot again.

They helped bring our boy back to life! Their staff is awesome! We are grateful for the work they've done! My dog hated the vet but he never wines when we go there and he likes the staff too! Can't say enough good things about these good folks!

Erica B is hands down the best Vet assistant I have had the pleasure of interacting with. The only thing that surpasses her knowledge and sunny disposition is the empathy she approaches every case with. Truly a valuable member of the staff!

I've been with Penobscot Vet for over a decade and I will never have another vet. They're prompt, professional and treat my animals with such kindness (and treats).
