Welcome to Olsen Veterinary Clinic

Olsen Veterinary Clinic, located at 2 Glen Ed Professional Park, Glen Carbon, IL 62034, USA, operates as a comprehensive "Pet Hospital" serving the Glen Carbon community and surrounding areas. Founded by Dr. Lelan Olsen in December 2001, the clinic prides itself on offering quality, compassionate, skilled, and affordable veterinary services, catering to both household pets and large/farm animals. This dual capability makes them a unique and valuable resource in the region.

The environment at Olsen Veterinary Clinic is described by many clients as having a "small office atmosphere" while still being "clean" and "professional." This suggests a more intimate and personalized setting, which can be comforting for pets and their owners. The clinic aims to create a welcoming and comfortable experience, with the staff carefully chosen for their "professional and caring manner." While specific details about the layout are not always highlighted, a well-regarded "Pet Hospital" typically ensures:

  • A Welcoming Reception Area: Designed to be clean and organized, fostering a sense of ease upon arrival.
  • Comfortable Examination Rooms: Spaces where pets can feel relatively calm during their check-ups and where owners can comfortably discuss concerns with the vet.
  • Dedicated Areas for Procedures: As a full-service clinic offering surgery, there would be dedicated sterile surgical suites, a preparation area, and recovery spaces.
  • Diagnostic Facilities: On-site areas for radiology (X-rays) and ultrasound, along with laboratory facilities for quick and efficient diagnostic testing.
  • Separate Spaces (Potentially): While not explicitly stated, many clinics catering to both small and large animals may have separate entry or handling protocols to manage different animal sizes and temperaments, ensuring safety and comfort for all patients.

The mission to make "Lilly always makes herself right at home there" indicates a conscious effort by the clinic and staff to create a positive and reassuring experience for pets, which is a hallmark of compassionate veterinary care.

Olsen Veterinary Clinic offers a remarkably extensive range of services, catering to a wide variety of animal needs. Their capabilities extend beyond typical small animal practice, solidifying their status as a versatile "Pet Hospital." Their services include:

  • General Wellness and Preventative Care:
    • Routine physical examinations for pets of all ages, from puppies and kittens to seniors.
    • Comprehensive vaccination programs tailored to individual pet needs and risk factors.
    • Microchipping for permanent identification and pet recovery.
    • Nutritional counseling to support optimal health and address specific dietary requirements.
    • Parasite prevention and control (fleas, ticks, heartworm, intestinal parasites).
  • Diagnostic Services:
    • In-house laboratory services for rapid and accurate blood work, urinalysis, bacteriology, mycology, and microbiology.
    • Advanced imaging, including Radiology (X-rays) and Ultrasound, for detailed internal diagnostics.
    • Pathology for tissue analysis and disease diagnosis.
  • Surgical Procedures: The clinic performs a variety of surgical interventions for both small and large animals, including:
    • Standard surgical procedures (e.g., spaying, neutering, mass removals).

    • Anesthesia administration and monitoring to ensure patient safety during surgery.
  • Dental Care: Comprehensive dental evaluations and cleanings, crucial for overall pet health.
  • Critical Care & Urgent Care: Indicating their capacity to handle immediate and serious medical situations.

  • Specialized Veterinary Medicine:
    • Internal Medicine: Diagnosis and management of complex medical conditions affecting organ systems.
    • Dermatology: Diagnosis and treatment of skin conditions.
    • Oncology: Addressing cancer diagnoses and treatment options.
    • Ophthalmology: Care for eye conditions.
    • Neurology: Diagnosis of neurological disorders.
  • Large Animal/Farm Animal Practice: A distinctive offering, Dr. Olsen is trained to treat larger farm animals like horses and cows, and while the office isn't conducive for in-house treatment, he offers house calls for services such as:
    • Health exams, vaccinations, blood drawing.
    • Prescribing medication, cleaning and suturing wounds.
    • Performing surgeries, monitoring reproductive health, and assisting with problem births.
  • Grooming: While they refer this service to Karen Callahan of Prancing Paws, it indicates a consideration for comprehensive pet care needs.

  • House Calls: For convenience, particularly for large animals or pets that are difficult to transport.
  • End-of-Life Care: Including cremation services.

The features of Olsen Veterinary Clinic, as gleaned from available information, paint a picture of a practice with both strengths and areas where client experiences can vary. Key features include:

  • Knowledgeable and Experienced Veterinarian: Dr. Olsen is consistently praised by long-term clients for being "very knowledgeable and understanding," with diagnoses that are "spot on." His extensive experience since graduating from Kansas State University in 1990 and his commitment to "current and best medical care" are significant assets.
  • Comprehensive Service Range: The ability to offer a wide array of services, from preventative care to complex surgeries and large animal house calls, means pet owners often do not need to seek care elsewhere for diverse needs.
  • Personalized Attention: The "small office atmosphere" and the clinic's dedication to providing "tailored approach to veterinary care" suggest that they aim for a personalized experience, where pet owners feel actively involved in managing their pets' care.
  • Focus on Technology and Procedures: The clinic prides itself on making "the latest technology and procedures available," including therapeutic laser and ultrasound, indicating a commitment to modern veterinary medicine.
  • Accessible Appointments: Online information suggests it is "easy to get an appointment at Dr Olsen's office" and they are welcoming of new patients, accepting walk-ins although appointments are preferred. This flexibility can be a valuable feature for pet owners.
  • Affordability: The clinic emphasizes "affordable services" and participates in programs like "Operation Spot Program" for low-cost spay/neuter, demonstrating an effort to make quality care financially accessible.

However, it is also important to acknowledge that some client experiences, as detailed in one review, can highlight challenges. Issues such as extended waiting times, managing fearful or unmuzzled animals in the waiting area, difficulties with IV insertions, and communication perceived as lacking empathy, especially during sensitive procedures like euthanasia, are points of concern. These isolated incidents, while not representative of every experience, underscore the importance of clear communication and consistent compassionate execution of services, particularly in highly emotional situations.

Regarding promotional information, Olsen Veterinary Clinic actively participates in and promotes specific programs designed to make veterinary care more affordable and accessible. While general discounts may vary, key promotions include:

  • Operation Spot Program: This is a significant promotional offering, providing highly discounted spay/neuter services for feline ($10) and canine ($50 for 50 lbs and under, $100 for over 50 lbs) patients during specific periods (e.g., February 3rd – March 31st, 2025). This program has limited applicants (e.g., 100 for feline, 5 for canine over 50 lbs) and requires a non-refundable deposit.
  • Affordable Rabies Vaccinations: As part of the Operation Spot Program, rabies vaccines are offered at $20 plus a $20 registration fee for one year with MCAC, which is a very competitive price.
  • Acceptance of Payment Solutions: The clinic accepts CareCredit and Scratchpay, which are promotional in nature as they help pet owners finance larger veterinary bills over time, making expensive treatments more manageable.
  • New Patient Welcome: While not always a direct discount, the welcoming of new patients at any time and the general emphasis on affordability act as a standing invitation for those seeking a new vet.

For the most current and accurate information on their full range of services, specific pricing, and details about the Operation Spot Program or any other promotions, local users are highly advised to contact Olsen Veterinary Clinic directly at (618) 656-5868. This direct communication will provide clarity and ensure pet owners receive the most up-to-date information regarding their pet's care.

Absolutely would not recommend for service. To start off I had to put my 2 girls down due to old age and medical problems and this vet promised both to be put down at the same time laying down next to each other. To start the visit off we were in the waiting room longer than expected. While waiting a lady walked in with a bloody dog telling me her dog is not friendly. It was not muzzled so I’m not sure how that was my problem. However she was helped first even past our appointment. Moving forward we were escorted towards a room which was not easy due to my pet being scared of other animals and they had a roaming dog and a cat blocking the doorway. After the vet finally got the dog into his office we were able to enter the room. The nurse proceeded to shave the first dogs leg while she was not cooperating as a pet would to clippers on the lower leg. After my dogs leg was finally shaved she then attempted 4 times to put in an IV and missed every single time. The nurse then said it may be necessary to sedate them at which point I was shocked that they didn’t start with that instead of scaring them beforehand. The nurse and vet then gave them a shot to essentially “put them to sleep” while they shaved the other dogs leg and prepared butterfly IVs on them. It seemed like they were practicing with a regular IV on my pets just due to how many missed attempts they had compared to a butterfly IV. In the mix the vet decided it was best to separate them and put one one the table because “it would be easier” which that did not happen. The vet had seemed extremely upset that he didn’t have it his easy way and that he had to do it as promised. I would not recommend this vet clinic at all if you care about your pets

Dr. Olsen is a new vet for us. After seeing different corporate veterinarians in Edwardsville area, it is nice to see a family vet. He is honest, thorough, and cost friendly. Could not recommend him enough.

We are new to the area and our 10 year old very anxious pitbull was due for her annual shots and exam. They were wonderful with her and gave her some sedation so she wasn't afraid. It was the most thorough exam she's ever received at the vet. Would definitely recommend them!

Dr. Olsen is the vet I have chosen for the care of my precious boy, Valentino. He’s wonderful and checked all of my boxes, as to what I was looking for in a veterinarian. I connected with him through a family member, she too highly recommends him. I highly recommend his business and feel he is well established in the area, as others have told me that they have used his services over the years. They also spoke highly of him and the care he provided to their pets. The staff is very nice and helpful in every way with his clients. I’m mostly thankful for the extreme love and compassion, they all showed towards my pet. 🤍😻🤍
