I will never take a pet to anyone but Dr. Cox. She goes above and beyond and treats our ferrets like they're her own. The team at Northside is always attentive, helpful, knowledgeable, and kind. The walk-in hours are a life saver, and the care you receive is second to none. And despite emergency service and owning exotics, their pricing for services is incredible. Considering the degree of care and knowledge we receive with every interaction, we send every friend with pets here. Thank you, Dr. Cox and the NS team. You are all wonderful and so appreciated.

Environment and Philosophy

The environment at Northside Animal Hospital is consistently described as warm, welcoming, and professional. Clients are immediately struck by the attentive, helpful, knowledgeable, and kind demeanor of the entire team. Dr. Cox herself is highly praised for her incredible compassion and personable approach. Reviews emphasize that pets are treated "like they're her own" and "exactly how a loving pet owner would hope," fostering an atmosphere of genuine care and trust. The clinic facility is described as "modern and super spotless," with a modest reception area and separate examination rooms tailored for various types of patients, indicating an organized and hygienic setting designed for diverse animal needs.

A core philosophy of Northside Animal Hospital, particularly embodied by Dr. Cox, is a thorough and holistic approach to veterinary medicine. She takes the time to "explain everything in detail," looking at "the whole picture" rather than just treating symptoms. This includes acknowledging that pet owners know their animals best, trusting their observations about unusual behaviors. This collaborative approach ensures that clients feel respected, heard, and actively involved in their pet's healthcare decisions, rather than "talked down to or disregarded." This patient-centered, empathetic philosophy is a cornerstone of their highly positive client experiences, even during stressful emergency situations.

Comprehensive Services Offered

Northside Animal Hospital provides a comprehensive suite of veterinary services for a diverse patient base, reflecting their expertise in both traditional and exotic animal care:

  • Exotic Pet Specialization: A standout feature, Dr. Cox and her team are highly skilled in treating a wide array of "non-traditional pets," including ferrets (a particular favorite of Dr. Cox, with specific expertise noted), birds (parrots, cockatiels, partnering with Pearl Parrot Rescue for intake exams), rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, bearded dragons, snakes, and even chickens. This makes them a vital resource for exotic pet owners in the Pittsburgh area, where such specialized care is often hard to find.
  • Urgent and Walk-In Care: The clinic offers crucial "walk-in hours" which are described as a "life saver" for pet owners needing immediate attention for sudden symptoms or emergencies. They are adept at quickly assessing conditions, stabilizing pets, and developing immediate treatment plans, even for complex cases.
  • Wellness and Preventative Medicine: For all species, they offer routine wellness exams, vaccinations tailored to individual needs, and comprehensive parasite prevention and control programs. Their proactive approach aims to prevent health issues and promote long-term well-being.
  • Diagnostic Services: The hospital utilizes advanced diagnostics to identify health problems accurately. This includes in-house laboratory testing (such as blood work for various species, urinalysis, fecal parasite screening, ear cytology) and digital radiology (X-rays). Dr. Cox is noted for clearly explaining her findings and what they indicate.
  • Medical Treatment and Disease Management: They provide diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of illnesses and conditions, offering "several possible options for treatment with pros and cons to each," allowing owners to make informed decisions. This includes managing chronic conditions like tumors/fluid issues in birds, as noted in a review.
  • Surgical Services: As a full-service animal hospital, it is expected they perform various surgical procedures, ranging from routine operations (like spaying and neutering) to more specific interventions for injuries or conditions requiring surgical correction.
  • Dental Care: Maintaining oral hygiene is crucial for all pets, and Northside Animal Hospital would typically offer dental examinations, cleanings, and necessary extractions.
  • Nutritional Counseling: Guidance on appropriate diets for pets, crucial for managing various health conditions and promoting overall health, particularly important for exotic animals with specific dietary needs.
  • Pain Management: Ensuring pets are comfortable and managing pain effectively, whether from injury, illness, or post-operative recovery, is a priority.
  • In-House Pharmacy: Providing convenient access to necessary medications and veterinary products.

Dr. Cox is incredible! We have a 6 year old ferret who started showing some concerning symptoms late on Friday a few weeks ago. We reached out to Northside and they told us to bring her in, when we arrived we were immediately brought into an exam room and they quickly went to work assessing her condition and checking her vitals. By the time we left, she was stabilized, had medication and a game plan for us to take care of her. We had another round of issues with her last night, and again Dr. Cox was able to see her right away, again assessed her condition and came back with several options for continuation of care. During both visits both Dr. Cox and her staff were wonderful, compassionate, and very personable. They treated our little princess exactly how a loving pet owner would hope. Especially with ferrets in the veterinary field, a lot of doctors make the mistake of assuming they are all the same and have no behavior outside of what was written in a medical journal 100+ years ago. It can be very frustrating as an attentive pet owner to describe a behavior she has never exhibited before and be told it's nothing. On the contrary, Dr. Cox seems to take a slightly holistic approach in addition to her medical knowledge. She acknowledged that we know our baby very well and trusts what we tell her is out of the ordinary. During both visits, neither my boyfriend nor I felt talked down to or disregarded. When it comes to treatment and diagnosis, Dr. Cox explains very clearly what she found, what she thinks it is indicating, several possible options for treatment with pros and cons to each, and allows us to make the most educated decision we possibly can with her guidance. I will be sending any and all ferret owners her way, she is truly a godsend. It is incredibly hard to find reliable, educated care for ferrets in the area and I'm thankful we have found Dr. Cox.

I’m always pleased with the care at NAH. The techs are lovely. Dr Cox is kind, compassionate, & attentive. But what I appreciate the most is straightforward answers, practical solutions, and not pushing overly cautious treatments for minor concerns, which I’ve experienced at other offices. And we’re in and out with little to no wait. Plus they have walk in hours after 4:00 for urgent appointments. Only downside is they’re shut 3 days, but I respect and admire the commitment to work life balance for the whole staff.

I appreciate that they take walk ins and saw my pet same day, but they ran us for almost $200 just to give my cat a basic prescription I knew she needed and antibiotics that she didn't need. The vet also never went over pricing until the end and then sat in the room with my confused and panicked partner with a computer waiting to take payment. I absolutely don't appreciate a 'high pressure environment" when you're dealing with sensitive issues. Just so everyone is aware moving forward, they charge $150 for a walk in visit, regardless of what they do, which is about $100 more than most other vets in the area. You'd be better off going anywhere else unless it's a real emergency.

I took my senior cat to have a check-up and was happy to be able to get in quickly and easily via their website. Once there, everyone I interacted with was lovely. They all had an amazing bedside manner and treated my little crazy tornado with the utmost care. (My cat is very good at being a struggle bus and liquid). I would happily recommend any other cat parents come here!
