Dr. Criado and team are simply amazing! We have a reactive large dog and have been trying to find a vet who will work with us on making sure that he gets the care he needs and EVERYONR at MountainView went about and beyond for us. We didn't feel shamed and were treated with the upmost respect care and compassion.

Mountain View Veterinary Care is a veterinary facility located at 800 Marguerite Rd, Greensburg, PA 15601, USA. The hospital can be reached by phone at (724) 687-8387, which also serves as their mobile contact. As a "Pet Hospital," Mountain View Veterinary Care aims to provide exemplary medical care, information, and education to clients, enabling them to make informed decisions for their pets' health. The practice strives to make the entire veterinary experience rewarding by partnering with owners to develop individualized diagnostic and care plans. The team includes Dr. Melissa Ackerman, DVM, the practice owner, and Dr. Mary Criado, DVM, among other dedicated staff members.

Environment: A Modern Facility with a Focus on Client Experience

Mountain View Veterinary Care boasts a "brand new facility with dedicated surgical and dental suites." This indicates a modern, well-equipped environment designed to facilitate advanced veterinary procedures. The use of "state of the art" equipment, including anesthesia and monitoring machines, digital radiology, digital dental radiology, ultrasound, and therapeutic laser, further points to a facility capable of providing high-level medical care. The stated commitment to being "service oriented" suggests an effort to create a comfortable and positive experience for both pets and their owners. For pets with specific needs, such as reactive or anxious dogs, the environment is made accommodating, as evidenced by a review praising how "EVERYONR at MountainView went about and beyond" for a reactive large dog, ensuring the owners "didn't feel shamed" and were "treated with the upmost respect care and compassion." This highlights a proactive approach to creating a less stressful visit for challenging patients. The hospital's hours of operation are Monday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with Saturdays and Sundays being closed, providing extended weekday availability for clients.

  • Surgical Procedures: They perform routine surgeries such as spays, neuters, and mass removals, within their dedicated surgical suites.

Features: Expertise, Compassion, and Client Communication Challenges

A key feature of Mountain View Veterinary Care is its team of experienced veterinarians, including Dr. Melissa Ackerman, the practice owner, who has extensive experience since graduating in 1999 and has a special interest in reproductive services. Dr. Mary Criado is also part of the team, with interests in surgery, ultrasound, and physical rehabilitation, and is noted for her willingness to see pocket pets and some exotics. The staff is consistently praised by some clients for being "simply amazing," treating pets and owners with "respect, care and compassion," particularly in challenging situations involving reactive animals.

However, client testimonials also highlight significant issues related to communication and perceived empathy, particularly concerning end-of-life care or difficult medical situations. One very serious negative review details a distressing experience where Dr. Ackerman was allegedly "VERY defensive" and "guilted" the owners after their sick dog passed away at home. The owners reported that Dr. Ackerman was "loud, argumentative, and unable to diffuse" when they kindly inquired about returning unused medications, instead focusing on "covering her butt" and stating she wasn't surprised the dog passed, despite the owners explicitly stating they were not blaming anyone. This suggests a potential breakdown in empathetic communication and professional conduct during highly sensitive times, which can severely impact client trust and satisfaction, even if the medical advice given was technically sound. This stark contrast in client experiences, from exceptional compassion for reactive pets to perceived hostility during a bereavement, presents a complex picture of the hospital's overall client relations.

Promotional Information: Seasonal Specials and Community Involvement

Mountain View Veterinary Care actively offers various promotions and discounts, demonstrating a commitment to making care accessible and affordable. Current promotions include:

  • Parasite Prevention Discounts: For a limited time (e.g., May 1 – July 31, 2025), clients can save on parasite protection, such as $20 off with 6 doses or $50 off with 12 doses of products like Simparica Trio® or Revolution Plus®. These offers are often combinable with Zoetis Petcare Rewards.
  • Dental Cleaning Discount: A promotion of $60 off dental cleanings is available when scheduled within 30 days of a veterinarian's recommendation. This encourages proactive dental health for pets.
  • Charitable Giving Program: The hospital engages in community support, such as their "Unleash Joy Charitable Giving Program" (running from November to January), partnering with local organizations like Concern for Animals to support pet owners facing financial difficulties, provide spay/neuter vouchers, manage an animal food bank, and assist with non-routine and emergency veterinary services. This demonstrates a commitment beyond direct patient care.

Additionally, some online sources indicate that Mountain View Veterinary Care may offer discounted services to senior citizens, veterans, and active military members, though it's always best to confirm these specific discounts directly with the clinic. They periodically offer specials and rebates associated with products they carry. Clients are encouraged to check their website or call for the most current information on promotions and special offers, as these are subject to change and may have specific terms and conditions.

We took our older dog there who was rather sick last week, and he unfortunately passed that evening at home. We were given the option by Dr Ackerman to take him to higher level of care versus care for him at home and make him comfortable. We elected for the latter, to which Dr Ackerman said she understood that decision, agreed it would be most comfortable for him. My husband called and kindly asked if there was any way to return/refund unused medications after he passed. We understood it was an odd ask, but we figured we would try. Dr Ackerman called us back VERY defensive stating she was offended. Guilted us by saying she told us he needed critical care and that she wasn’t surprised he passed. She was so incessant about covering her butt, that she would not allow us to explain we weren’t blaming anyone. Never once did we demand a refund or money back. We would have kindly taken a no. She was loud, argumentative, and unable to diffuse.

Our regular vet does not do surgery anymore so we chose Mountain View to have our 16 month golden retriever spayed and a Gastropexy. I made the appointment a month and a half out. The Sunday before her surgery I received an email from Dr. Ackerman saying she thought she was over weight and didn’t want to do the surgery if she was. We took her in that week for a weight check and for her to look at our pup. The technician that brought her out told my husband she could still lose a little bit of weight but we were good to go for surgery Friday. The next morning I got an email saying she was overweight and didn’t want to do the surgery. Needless to say we were confused. I called my vet and they said her weight was fine and they seemed perplexed. I wanted to do what was best for her so we canceled her surgery. Later that day I got a phone call confirming her surgery for Friday. Then another phone call to reschedule her for three weeks. After another weight check and some back and forth I realized they are not communicating with each other and didn’t fell comfortable having her surgery preformed there. We used them for our other pup and didn’t have this issue. I think she’s taking on way too many patients and is overwhelmed. This is our golden retriever that she said is overweight. She gets 3/4 cup food twice a day and carrots and green beans for treats.
