I've had to take my dog 3 times in the last 6 years to MedVets at varying times (7 PM, 2:30 AM and 9 PM). In all 3 instances, the concern and care by the team was comforting. The 2:30 AM visit was during covid. The vet called me as I waited in the car to explain what was going on and why. I am grateful for the care my dog received each time. The last visit was on 4/18/25. When checking in, the intake worker noted the distress my dog was showing and immediately got her back to be checked by the vet. The whole team and vet were caring and informative. I realize that prices for ER vet care are higher than at your vet but I've not found MedVet to be outrageously priced. This is the same with people. Go to the ER and prices are higher. When your pet is in a bit of a crisis and your regular vet isn't open, I am glad they are there.

The dedication of MedVet Asheville to their patients and clients is consistently highlighted in customer reviews. One grateful pet owner recounted multiple emergency visits, stating, "I've had to take my dog 3 times in the last 6 years to MedVets at varying times (7 PM, 2:30 AM and 9 PM). In all 3 instances, the concern and care by the team was comforting. The 2:30 AM visit was during covid. The vet called me as I waited in the car to explain what was going on and why. I am grateful for the care my dog received each time." This speaks to the consistent level of care and communication, even during challenging circumstances. Another review emphasizes the immediate attention given to a distressed pet: "The last visit was on 4/18/25. When checking in, the intake worker noted the distress my dog was showing and immediately got her back to be checked by the vet. The whole team and vet were caring and informative." Perhaps one of the most poignant testimonials comes from an owner who had to say goodbye to their beloved senior dog: "My 16, almost 17 year old weenie dog had a major medical emergency on a Saturday night and this was the closest hospital to us. My husband had called them ahead of time to let them know we were on the way, and it was bad! They were waiting on us when we arrived and they met me at the car to walk her in. The entire staff at this location was absolutely amazing. From the front desk clerk, to the several nurses and the doctor we worked with that night, I can’t thank them enough for their kindness and compassion. We had to say goodbye to our senior dog that night, but this place made it as easy as possible. I highly recommend them!" These experiences underscore the hospital's compassionate approach during highly stressful and emotional times, a crucial aspect of emergency and specialty veterinary care.

Services Offered

As a leading Pet Hospital specializing in emergency and advanced care, MedVet Asheville offers a robust suite of services. Their expertise extends beyond general veterinary practice, providing critical and specialized treatments for various complex conditions:

  • 24/7 Emergency Care: This is a core service, available every day of the year, around the clock. Pet owners can bring their pets directly to the hospital in an emergency – no appointment is needed. The team is prepared to handle a wide range of critical conditions, from traumatic injuries and sudden illnesses to severe allergic reactions and ingestion of toxins.
  • Specialty Care: MedVet Asheville offers advanced specialty veterinary services, collaborating with family veterinarians to provide a higher level of care for specific conditions. Key specialty services include:
    • Ophthalmology: Their ophthalmology team is extensively trained in diagnosing and treating a variety of eye conditions, from routine eye exams to complex ocular surgeries.
    • Surgery: Led by experienced veterinary surgeons, the surgery team provides advanced surgical procedures, including both soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries, aimed at improving the quality and length of life for pets needing complex interventions.
    • Other potential specialties (often found in MedVet networks, though not explicitly stated for Asheville, these are common for their model): Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Oncology, Dermatology, etc., which they may refer to or develop.
  • Advanced Diagnostics: To support their emergency and specialty services, MedVet Asheville utilizes cutting-edge diagnostic tools. This includes on-site labs for rapid results, digital radiography (X-rays), CT (Computed Tomography) scans, and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). Imaging results are often read by MedVet radiologists, ensuring expert interpretation.
  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU): A dedicated ICU allows for continuous monitoring and critical care management of severely ill or injured patients. The presence of a feline-friendly ward within the ICU demonstrates consideration for the unique needs of different species in a high-stress environment.
  • In-House Pharmacy: To facilitate immediate treatment, the hospital maintains an on-site pharmacy, ensuring critical medications are readily available.
  • Collaboration with Family Veterinarians: MedVet Asheville works as a trusted partner with primary care veterinarians, providing advanced care and seamless communication to ensure continuity of treatment once a pet is stabilized or specialty care is completed.
Features and Distinctive Qualities

MedVet Asheville distinguishes itself through several critical features that underscore its role as a premier emergency and specialty animal hospital:

  • 24/7 Availability: Their continuous operation ensures that high-level veterinary care is always accessible, particularly vital for unexpected emergencies outside of regular business hours. This constant readiness provides immense peace of mind for pet owners.
  • Focus on Emergency and Specialty Care: Unlike general practices, MedVet's primary focus is on emergency and advanced specialty treatments. This specialization means their staff, equipment, and protocols are entirely geared towards critical and complex cases, leading to a higher level of expertise in these areas.
  • Experienced and Compassionate Team: Reviewers consistently praise the "concern and care," "kindness and compassion" of the entire staff, from front desk to veterinarians. The team is described as "caring and informative," making difficult situations as manageable as possible for pet owners.
  • State-of-the-Art Facility and Equipment: The newly-remodeled hospital, with its expanded treatment areas, advanced surgical suites, CT scanner, and dedicated ICU, demonstrates a significant investment in technology and infrastructure to provide the best possible care.
  • Veterinarian-Owned and Led Network: MedVet is part of a larger, veterinarian-owned and led network of hospitals. This structure often means that decisions are driven by medical best practices and a deep understanding of veterinary needs, rather than solely by corporate objectives.
  • Accreditation: MedVet Asheville is accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). This voluntary accreditation signifies that the hospital meets rigorous standards across various areas, including patient care, pain management, diagnostics, and team training, exceeding basic state regulations.
Promotional Information and Savings

While MedVet Asheville, as an emergency and specialty hospital, may not offer the typical promotional discounts seen at general practices for routine services, they do focus on facilitating access to necessary care, particularly during stressful and expensive emergency situations:

  • Financing Options: MedVet Asheville understands that emergency and specialty care can be costly. They offer special financing and payment arrangements for qualified pet owners through independent companies such as CareCredit. This allows clients to manage large, unexpected veterinary bills by spreading out payments over time. Information on CareCredit is readily available to help pet owners explore these options.
  • Transparency Regarding Costs: While emergency vet care is inherently more expensive than regular vet visits (as noted by a reviewer comparing it to human ER costs), MedVet strives to be transparent. One reviewer mentioned that they "didn't find MedVet to be outrageously priced" given the nature of the emergency care. The staff aims to be informative about the situation and associated costs.
  • Partnership with Primary Veterinarians: By serving as a referral hospital, MedVet helps integrate care, potentially optimizing overall treatment plans and costs by focusing on acute and specialized needs that primary vets may not be equipped to handle.

MedVet Asheville stands as an indispensable asset to the Asheville community, offering vital 24/7 emergency services and advanced specialty care for pets. Their state-of-the-art facility, combined with a deeply compassionate and skilled team, ensures that even in the most challenging moments, pets receive the highest standard of medical attention. For urgent needs, pet owners can contact them directly at (828) 665-4399.

Dr. Whyte and the Med-Vet Asheville staff saved my dog’s life. They were caring and supportive throughout her 7 day stay. Oreo would not be here without them. - Thank You to Dr Whyte for being patient and discussing all our options. Without Dr. Whyte’s surgery skills, Oreo would not be here. - Thank You to Ashley for supporting us and keeping our spirits up. Her smile and spirit is contagious. - Thank You to the ER/ICU team Hannah, Olivia, Jess, Kaitlynn, Cinnamon, Taylor, Angie from Med-Vet Jupiter, Kristen, Sarah, and Kristy Rose who helped with Oreo’s treatment during her hospital stay. - EXTRA SPECIAL THANK YOU to Erica and Eric in the ICU who took care of Oreo the majority of the time and treated her like their own. - Thank You to Alana, Chloe, Walker, and Stephanie at the front desk for answering the phone when we called or just answering questions when we came in. - Thank You to Dr. Klos, Dr. Wesselman, Dr. Wall, and Dr. Sheldon from the ER for keeping us updated. We will definitely go back to Med-Vet for any future emergencies with any of our pets.

I am so thankful that MedVet is only 9 miles from my home. I have a 15 1/2- year- old Cocker Mix. She seems to be most needy late at night, holidays, and Sundays, when my vet is closed. I feel confident going to MedVet because I know the care there is excellent. The entire staff is so attentive and caring about the pets. They want them to be comfortable at MedVet.

This is genuinely one of the most wonderful places I've ever been with my pups. Dr Shawni Wall was so gentle and understanding when it came time to make a hard decision about my baby, Ethan. He was handled with care before and after his euthanasia by both her and the wonderful techs who took care of us, and my family has received numerous cards from Dr Shawni and med vet in support of us, and in memory of Ethan. Their support and generosity towards us has made our loss a little easier to bear. We got to cremate Ethan with assistance from them and bring our baby home to rest. This will be a place we return to without hesitation. Thank you guys so very much. ❤️
