I recently had to put my beagle down and I can’t tell you how wonderful the staff was. Kate showed such compassion as Koufax was traveling over the Rainbow Bridge. The community is lucky to have such a caring Vet.

The environment at Four Paws Animal Hospital is designed to foster comfort and confidence for both pets and their owners. The facility is well-equipped with advanced equipment and technologies necessary to provide the highest standard of care. This includes comprehensive in-house testing for accurate diagnosis, digital x-ray, a therapy laser, a dedicated surgical suite, a dental suite, and a pharmacy. This robust infrastructure ensures that pets receive prompt and precise diagnostics and treatments, all under one roof. While specific details about waiting areas or examination room aesthetics aren't extensively detailed, the emphasis on modern equipment and the compassionate approach of the staff suggest a professional and caring atmosphere.
The services offered at Four Paws Animal Hospital are comprehensive, covering a broad spectrum of veterinary needs:
Preventative Care and Wellness Exams: Regular nose-to-tail wellness exams are foundational to their philosophy. These annual visits are crucial for early detection of potential health problems, as pets are adept at hiding symptoms. This proactive approach aims for early diagnosis and treatment, promoting a longer, healthier life for pets.
Vaccinations: Essential for protecting pets from common and serious diseases like parvovirus, kennel cough, rabies, and distemper. Vaccinations are tailored to each pet's age, health status, and exposure risk.
Parasite Prevention and Control: A year-round commitment to protecting pets from heartworms (transmitted by mosquitoes), fleas, ticks, and intestinal parasites. They emphasize that many parasites can cause serious illness or even be fatal if left untreated, making prevention paramount.
Diagnostic and Therapeutic Services: The hospital is well-equipped to provide a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic services. This includes in-house lab work for quick results and digital radiography (X-rays) to examine bones, organs, and tissues for issues like arthritis, broken bones, foreign objects, or organ enlargement. They also utilize Oncura, a telemedicine team, for advanced diagnostics such as abdominal ultrasounds and echocardiograms.
Surgical Services: A state-of-the-art surgical suite allows for a wide variety of surgical procedures. The team understands pet owners' anxieties about surgery and provides compassionate monitoring before, during, and after procedures, with an emphasis on safe, multi-modal anesthesia and advanced monitoring equipment to minimize risks, ensure pain relief, and promote faster recovery.
Dental Care: Recognizing the importance of oral health, Four Paws Animal Hospital offers routine dental care, including exams, X-rays, and professional teeth cleaning. They stress that dental disease is common and can lead to pain, tooth loss, and generalized health issues.
Emergency Care: The hospital provides comprehensive treatment services, hospitalization, and critical care for pet emergencies. Their emergency center is equipped with the latest diagnostic equipment and technologies to assess urgent health needs.
Pharmacy: They maintain a complete inventory of pharmaceuticals, vitamins, shampoos, and heartworm preventatives to meet pets' needs.
Dietary Counseling: Doctors and staff offer guidance on pet nutrition, helping owners make informed choices about food brands, ingredients, feeding amounts, and addressing special dietary needs such as weight management, age-related nutrition, or diets for specific medical conditions.
End-Of-Life Care: A crucial and deeply compassionate service, Four Paws Animal Hospital provides both medical assistance and emotional support to pet owners during the difficult decision of saying goodbye to a beloved pet. Customer reviews specifically highlight the staff's professionalism, helpfulness, honesty, and immense compassion during these challenging times, with Kate being noted for her empathy during a pet's passing. This speaks volumes about their commitment to supporting families through every stage of their pet's life.
A key feature of Four Paws Animal Hospital, consistently lauded by its clientele, is the exceptional empathy and professionalism of its staff. Testimonials frequently highlight their compassionate approach, particularly during sensitive moments like euthanasia. The staff are described as "wonderful," "professional, helpful, honest, and compassionate," leaving clients feeling that they are "lucky to have such a caring Vet." This deep level of care and understanding contributes significantly to the hospital's reputation within the community.
In terms of promotional information, Four Paws Animal Hospital, like many modern veterinary practices, understands the importance of managing pet healthcare costs. They accept pet insurance for unexpected accidents and illnesses, advising owners to insure their pets while they are healthy to avoid issues with pre-existing conditions. They also suggest inquiring about wellness plans, which can assist with routine health expenses. For larger, unexpected costs, they accept financing solutions such as CareCredit and Scratchpay, enabling pet owners to spread out payments over time. While specific, limited-time promotions for new clients or services are not broadly advertised, the emphasis on these financial assistance options reflects a commitment to making quality veterinary care accessible. Their online presence indicates a potential for an upgraded online store for food and medicine, which often includes auto-ship discounts and other promotions to provide "Pawsome Savings!" This also suggests a focus on convenience for their clients.
In summary, Four Paws Animal Hospital in Southport, NC, distinguishes itself as a full-service "Pet Hospital" that combines advanced medical capabilities with profound compassion. The dedication of their experienced team, comprehensive range of diagnostic and treatment services, and empathetic approach to both pets and their owners make them a highly valued and trusted veterinary care provider in the region. Jan 28, 2025 · Lisa GoodsonThe staff at Four Paws were very professional, helpful, honest, and compassionate when we had to make the difficult decision to say goodbye to our Ginger who was 14 1/2 and was a loved member of our family. Can’t thank them enough!
Mar 02, 2025 · Kenny SwansonIt was time for my Kitty of 19 years to cross the Rainbow Bridge. I was totally dissolved. My heart was broken, still is. Thank God my Best friend was with me. As we entered, we were greeted by warm smiles and understanding. As we sat in the waiting room softly crying, a door opened down the hallway and the most majestic deep orange cat sauntered down the hallway, never taking his eyes off of us. He rubbed up against my legs and I reached to pat him. I felt such compassion from this little creature. It was time and we were brought into the room. My little Autumn seemed to be at peace. Dr G and her Nurse (so sorry I don’t remember your name, but you were wonderful) spoke to us with such sincere love and kindness. I knew I was doing the right thing. About a week latter I received the most heart warming card signed by everyone at the practice with sympathy and a sweet thoughtful paw print of my Sweet Autumn. Just so Kind💕 Thank you All, you made a very hard thing a little softer, and thank you to the Angel Support Kitty that knew I was in need. Most sincerely and in love, Autumns Mom💕🌹
Jan 15, 2023 · Kimberly EdgecombDr. Rickman and the staff at Four Paws are amazing! They helped us through the loss of our 10 1/2 year old lab, Saylor a couple of months ago with such respect and compassion and now continue to care for our small dog Manny and our new lab puppy, Breezy. Breezy had an acute onset of lethargy over the weekend and the staff worked us in to see Dr. Rickman who diagnosed her perfectly and with antibiotics she is back to her "puppy" self within 24 hours! Thank you to a great Animal hospital and caring staff!
Mar 10, 2020 · Amelia WatsonAfter what is in my opinion poor customer service I have moved my dogs to another Vet in Southport. The Doctors at this Vet are great but the Techs and staff are condescending and unprofessional in my experience and opinion. In a recent phone conversation with the staff regarding heart worm prevention medication the representative kept referencing " the law " multiple times. I do not know NC law regarding heart prevention RX but why not be professional and courteous and just state guidelines and requirements. Very sad to see such a great group of Vet Doctors accept poor customer service from staff.
