4/22/25 Since I can’t add a new post I’m updating on this one today. I phoned the office late afternoon today to get Bailey in for her yearly shots after I got the reminder card today in the mail saying they are due 5/11 and was told they were booked out till July. I was shocked. I told the lady I’ve never had to wait this long and need her shots to board her. I asked if I should take her somewhere else and she told me “that wouldn’t be a bad idea if you need them before July”. I was shocked so I asked for her medical records and she emailed them to me while I was on the phone. I hate to see Dr Formea’s practice he built up with such a good reputation now becoming something I won’t take my animals to in the future. At least I have her records and will be finding her a new provider. May God bless Dr.Formea and Lorie for all their dedication to their patients. I know we miss them! This was my post 5 months ago today: A few weeks ago I called to get Ameretto, our 14.5 yr old min pin in to see Dr. Formea and was told he’s on an unexpected leave of absence and to say prayers for him. We did see Dr. Maag and he was good with her and helped me make the decision to do pain management. I asked Dr. Maag to please let Dr. Formea know about her and he said he would. I had to make a tough decision to let her go and when I made the call to the office and asked if Dr. Formea could do this for me, he was still out so we had Dr. Maag assist us with her passing. The experience this time was different as we didn’t see Dr. Maag until he gave her the last shot where when I had this tough decision a few years back, Dr. Formea was there with me making sure both myself and Jack (my chihuahua)were ok. I want to thank Will and Linesse (I’m sure I spelled this wrong) for their compassion and hugs during this difficult time and I only hope that Dr. Formea and Lorie see my post and that you both know that Ameretto was given the best care by both of you and your staff over the years. The pictures are of her and Bailey having their last breakfast together and the one by herself was the last time she laid in my office while I worked. May God answer my prayers and watch over Dr. Formea and his staff in this difficult time and I do hope to see him back in the clinic soon.

Welcome to Formea Animal Hospital

Formea Animal Hospital, situated at 1639 Main St, Alton, IL 62002, USA, has established itself as a significant "Pet Hospital" within the Alton community, known for its enduring commitment to animal health and client relationships. While recent customer feedback indicates some operational challenges and changes, the hospital's history and the positive sentiments expressed about its founding veterinarian, Dr. Formea, and long-term staff, paint a picture of a practice deeply invested in the well-being of its animal patients.

The environment at Formea Animal Hospital, while not explicitly detailed in terms of physical layout, is implicitly understood to be a place where significant life moments for pets and their owners occur, from routine check-ups to difficult end-of-life decisions. The reverence and longing expressed for Dr. Formea and Lorie suggest an atmosphere that, historically, fostered deep trust and compassionate care. The mention of a previous positive experience where "Dr. Formea was there with me making sure both myself and Jack (my chihuahua) were ok" during a pet's passing highlights a highly supportive and empathetic environment. Even with changes, the compassion shown by staff members like Will and Linesse during a difficult time indicates an ongoing commitment to providing emotional support to grieving pet owners. A typical "Pet Hospital" environment strives for cleanliness, organization, and a calming atmosphere, essential for reducing stress in both animals and their human companions. The fact that the hospital receives regular requests for medical records and has established procedures for handling them (e.g., emailing records while on the phone) suggests a functional administrative system, despite recent scheduling difficulties.

Formea Animal Hospital offers a range of services essential for comprehensive pet care. Based on the customer reviews, these include:

  • Routine Vaccinations and Wellness Checks: The mention of "yearly shots" and "reminder card" indicates a strong emphasis on preventative care, including routine vaccinations to maintain pet health and prevent common diseases.
  • Pain Management: The practice provides pain management solutions, as evidenced by Dr. Maag assisting a client in making the decision for pain management for an elderly dog. This highlights their commitment to improving the quality of life for pets, particularly those with chronic conditions or at advanced ages.
  • End-of-Life Care and Euthanasia: A particularly sensitive and crucial service offered is compassionate end-of-life care. Reviewers describe the profound impact of Dr. Formea's presence during previous euthanasia experiences and the continued support from other staff members during such difficult times. This demonstrates a commitment to providing comfort and dignity during a pet's final moments, as well as support for grieving owners.
  • General Medical Care: The care provided to an English bulldog over 13 years and a "baby bulldog" currently, including "good care, Fair cost of procedures and treatment," suggests a comprehensive approach to managing various medical conditions and providing ongoing health maintenance for pets.

While not explicitly detailed, a comprehensive pet hospital would also typically offer diagnostic services (like lab work and imaging), surgical procedures, and dental care to address a full spectrum of animal health needs. The mention of Dr. Maag and "veterinarian Dr K" indicates a team of veterinarians capable of providing diverse medical care.

The key features of Formea Animal Hospital, as gleaned from the customer testimonials, are deeply intertwined with its historical reputation and the personal impact of its staff. Dr. Formea's legacy is a significant feature, with clients expressing strong loyalty and appreciation for his long-standing dedication and personal involvement in their pets' lives, especially during emotionally challenging times. The "good reputation" he built is a testament to this. The compassion of the staff, exemplified by Will and Linesse providing "hugs during this difficult time," is another powerful feature, highlighting the human element and emotional support provided to clients. The continuity of care for long-term patients, like the English bulldog, underscores the trust and consistent quality of service provided over many years. The "fair cost of procedures and treatment" mentioned by one satisfied client is also a notable feature, indicating a commitment to affordable care, which is a significant factor for many pet owners. However, it's also important to acknowledge the recent operational challenges, such as extended wait times for appointments ("booked out till July") and changes in staff availability, which have led to client dissatisfaction and a perceived decline in service for some. This indicates a period of transition or increased demand impacting immediate accessibility.

From a promotional perspective, Formea Animal Hospital can leverage its rich history and the strong, positive relationships built by Dr. Formea over the years. Marketing efforts could focus on the "legacy of compassionate care" and the enduring commitment of the team, even amidst changes. Highlighting the consistent quality of care for long-term patients and the empathetic support provided during end-of-life care would resonate deeply with pet owners. They could promote the expertise of the current veterinary team, including Dr. Maag and "Dr K," showcasing their skills and dedication. Testimonials that speak to the compassionate treatment and fair pricing would be valuable. While addressing scheduling challenges transparently, the hospital could emphasize its commitment to accommodating patient needs where possible, perhaps through improved booking systems or expanded capacity. Promoting preventative care services, like yearly shots, and the availability of pain management and compassionate end-of-life care, would also be key. The hospital's direct contact information, phone: (618) 462-8000 and address: 1639 Main St, Alton, IL 62002, USA, would be vital for client engagement. Acknowledging the changes while reinforcing the core values of care and commitment could help maintain and rebuild trust with the community, ensuring the hospital continues to serve its patients effectively.

The veterinarian Dr K does a wonderful job and takes good care of my baby dogs. I switched to this specific veterinarian because of the good care, Fair cost of procedures and treatment as well as staff retention unlike the creepiest veterinarian. Formea took good care of my previous English bulldog who made it to 13 years old Now they are taking good care of my baby bulldog I have now.

This place is not what it used to be. The last few times I’ve taken my cats here the staff has all screwed up. The first mess up- I called to ask how much a visit was for my cats. They told me $54. I asked if that was just for one cat or all three? And she even asked to check and told me it would be $54 TOTAL regardless if I brought just one cat or all three. My husband was even listening to the conversation and confirmed this. So of course we brought all three and was then charged $162 and they refused to refund us and argued they did not tell us that when they absolutely did. The second mess up- Took my cat to them, he required antibiotics. They gave me pills for him which he wouldn’t take. Turns out he was suppose to get liquid antibiotics. After awhile my cat didn’t want to take it anymore and so I called and they said oh he can quit taking that, it was just for diarrhea and he was literally never having diarrhea in the first place. So why was he on it?! I don’t play about my animals, and I don’t have money to be scammed. This place did both. I have since found a different vet. Very much recommend you find a different one too.

Always have a pleasant experience when I bring my dog Vida to the clinic. This visit was for an issue and Vida was assessed and treated with great care and love. I had to leave her there in the very capable hands of Dr. K and the staff and I was updated throughout the day before picking her up. Thanks so much Formea Staff! I always highly recommend taking your pet here for all their care. ❤️

Everyone was so nice and welcoming. The hospital was very clean and the staff was very helpful. I was in and out with my grumbly cat with all of my questions/concerns acknowledged and addressed. I'm looking forward to bringing my other cat and my dog in soon.
