Welcome to Equine Specialty Hospital

Equine Specialty Hospital, situated at 17434 Rapids Rd, Burton, OH 44021, USA, is a distinguished veterinary facility entirely dedicated to the care of horses. Operating within the "Pet Hospital" category, this establishment goes beyond general veterinary practice to provide specialized and often critical medical, surgical, and diagnostic services tailored exclusively for equine patients. Their commitment to advanced care and their highly skilled team, as evidenced by glowing client testimonials, make them a premier destination for horse owners not just in Burton, but across a broader regional area. For contact, they can be reached at (440) 834-0811 or +1 440-834-0811.

The environment at Equine Specialty Hospital is meticulously designed to accommodate the unique needs of horses, from general wellness to intensive care and surgical recovery. Unlike facilities for smaller companion animals, an equine hospital requires specialized infrastructure to safely and effectively manage large animals. The hospital boasts 27 stalls, including dedicated critical care stalls with IV fluid delivery systems, fully padded neurologic stalls equipped with hoists for recumbent horses, and separate neonatal stalls that are heated and padded, complete with in-stall oxygen delivery and vital sign monitoring. There is also a separate isolation facility with two isolation stalls for managing contagious cases. This extensive infrastructure ensures that horses, regardless of their condition, are housed in environments optimized for their recovery and comfort. The facility also features a fully equipped in-house laboratory and pharmacy, enabling rapid diagnostics and immediate access to necessary medications. The 5 acres of fenced property provide ample space, and the presence of registered veterinary technicians and veterinary assistants working 24/7 ensures constant monitoring and care. The commitment to a calm and efficient environment is reflected in reviews that praise the team's kindness, knowledge, and direct approach, creating a trustworthy atmosphere for owners during often stressful times.

The services offered by Equine Specialty Hospital are comprehensive and highly specialized, covering a vast array of equine health needs. They are a referral hospital, often working in conjunction with primary care veterinarians, though direct admissions are also accepted. Their services include:

  • Internal Medicine: This encompasses the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of a wide range of diseases affecting horses, including respiratory, digestive (like the severe proximal enteritis mentioned in a review), neurologic, cardiac, endocrine, kidney, and liver conditions. They have dedicated intensive care units for both adult and neonatal patients, providing 24/7 monitoring by a specialized veterinary team.

  • Surgical Services: With board-certified surgeons on staff, they perform various surgical procedures. The review mentioning an eye healing "beautifully without any issues" suggests successful surgical outcomes. The hospital has two fully equipped surgical suites to handle complex operations.

  • Advanced Diagnostic Imaging: Equine Specialty Hospital is exceptionally well-equipped in this area, featuring state-of-the-art modalities such as MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), Nuclear Scintigraphy, Digital Radiography, Digital Ultrasonography, and Endoscopy. These advanced tools are crucial for accurate diagnosis, especially for complex lameness issues or internal conditions.

  • Lameness and Sports Medicine: A significant focus for many equine hospitals, they provide thorough lameness evaluations, including diagnostic blocks and advanced imaging, to pinpoint the cause of lameness and develop precise treatment plans. Dr. Milligan's detailed lameness exam and clear plan for the hospitalized horse exemplify this service.

  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU): A specialized unit for critically ill foals, equipped for oxygen delivery, vital sign monitoring, and continuous intravenous fluid and nutrition administration. This level of care is essential for giving fragile newborns the best chance of survival.

  • Adult Intensive Care: Providing 24-hour intensive care for critically ill or post-operative adult horses, with facilities like padded stalls and sling support for neurologic or recumbent patients.

  • Neurologic Evaluation and Treatment: Specialists perform thorough neurologic evaluations to diagnose conditions ranging from infectious diseases to spinal cord issues, utilizing diagnostics like digital radiographs of the cervical spine and spinal taps.

  • Rehabilitation and Conditioning: The facility includes a rehabilitation center equipped with therapeutic laser, cold compression therapy, and potentially a water treadmill, aiding in recovery and conditioning.

  • Emergency Admissions: The hospital is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to handle equine emergencies, making them a vital resource for critical situations. Owners are advised to call in advance for emergencies.

The key features that underscore the excellence of Equine Specialty Hospital are:

  • Specialized Equine Focus: Their exclusive dedication to horses means all resources, expertise, and facilities are tailored to equine needs, leading to a higher level of specialized care than general veterinary practices can offer.

  • Board-Certified Expertise: The presence of board-certified surgeons and specialists, such as Dr. Milligan (who is highly praised in the reviews), signifies a high level of training, experience, and commitment to advanced veterinary medicine.

  • State-of-the-Art Diagnostics and Facilities: Possessing advanced imaging technology like MRI and Nuclear Scintigraphy, along with specialized intensive care units and numerous stalls, places them among the best-equipped equine facilities in the region, capable of handling complex cases.

  • Exceptional Communication: The review specifically highlights "incredible" communication between Dr. Milligan, the owner, and the horse's mother during a 7-day hospitalization for a very sick horse. This transparent and consistent communication is crucial for client peace of mind during stressful times.

  • Compassionate and Knowledgeable Team: The staff are consistently described as "very kind and knowledgeable," and the techs are lauded as "the best." This combination of expertise and empathy ensures that both the horses receive excellent care and the owners feel supported.

  • 24/7 Emergency and Hospitalization Care: The round-the-clock staffing and emergency services provide a critical safety net for horse owners, knowing that expert care is available at any time.

  • Acceptance of Care Credit: The mention of accepting Care Credit is a practical benefit for clients, helping to make specialized and potentially costly veterinary care more financially manageable.

Regarding promotional information, Equine Specialty Hospital's most powerful promotion comes from its reputation for excellent outcomes and compassionate, expert care, as evidenced by the profound gratitude expressed in client testimonials. Their standing as the only equine veterinary hospital within a significant radius (including Toledo, Mansfield, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo) highlights their unique and critical role in regional equine health. While specific promotional offers might not be listed, their approach to attracting clients would naturally focus on:

  • Highlighting Advanced Capabilities: Emphasizing their state-of-the-art diagnostic tools (MRI, Nuclear Scintigraphy) and specialized units (NICU, adult ICU) to showcase their superior capabilities compared to general practices.

  • Sharing Success Stories: Featuring testimonials and case studies (with client permission) that demonstrate successful treatments for complex conditions, like the eye healing or the recovery from severe enteritis, would build trust and confidence.

  • Professional Referrals: Maintaining strong relationships with general equine veterinarians in the region who refer complex cases to them, reinforcing their role as a trusted referral center.

  • Educational Outreach: Hosting educational events or webinars for horse owners on topics such as preventative care, recognizing emergency symptoms, or advancements in equine medicine, further establishing their expertise.

  • Online Presence: A comprehensive website detailing their services, facility, and veterinarian profiles, along with active engagement on social media platforms relevant to horse owners, would be crucial for outreach.

Equine Specialty Hospital represents the pinnacle of specialized veterinary care for horses. With its advanced facility, highly skilled and compassionate team, and a comprehensive suite of services ranging from intensive care to sophisticated diagnostics and surgery, it serves as an indispensable resource for horse owners throughout Ohio and surrounding states, offering peace of mind and excellent outcomes for their cherished equine companions.

My horse spent 7 days hospitalized with severe proximal enteritis. He was very very sick. I can’t say enough about Dr.Milligan and all of the techs who treated him. The communication between Milligan, my mother, and I was incredible, better than any other DVM we have worked with in our many years of owning horses. Knowing my horse was in the best hands with a team I could trust was what got us through. During our 7 day hospitalization and once he was stable, Milligan performed a lameness exam as a second option. She reviewed in detail all of our diagnostic records and performed a fresh lameness exam and created a clear plan for us moving forward. Equine Specialty Hospital doesn’t miss a beat. Highly recommend Dr.Milligan. I wish I remembered the techs names because they were the best! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
