I had taken the day off work as my dog was ill, it turned out our regular vet couldn’t get her in, I called 13 vets in our area and nobody could see her. I made a post on FB and my sister and several friends recommended Dr.Rice who has a Saturday morning clinic from 10:00-12:00. Our experience was awesome, the staff was kind and caring, the Dr listened and took time w us and the cost was more than reasonable. My Chloe girl is feeling 100% better! Dr. Rice will be our veterinarian going forward! Great place!

Welcome to Chautauqua Veterinary Services
Chautauqua Veterinary Services, situated at 5273 Stow Ferry Rd, Stow, NY 14785, USA, stands out as a highly recommended "Pet Hospital" in the region. Reachable at (716) 789-3806 or +1 716-789-3806, this veterinary practice, notably led by Dr. Rice, has garnered significant positive attention for its compassionate approach, affordability, and dedication to animal well-being. Unlike some larger, more corporate veterinary establishments, Chautauqua Veterinary Services appears to embody the ethos of a community-focused practice, prioritizing patient care and owner understanding over maximizing profit.
While specific details about the physical aesthetic of the clinic are not provided, the overwhelming sentiment from customer reviews suggests an environment that is welcoming, kind, and reassuring. The staff, including Dr. Rice himself, are consistently described as "kind and caring." This indicates a clinic atmosphere where empathy and genuine concern for both the animal patient and their human companions are paramount. In situations where pets are ill or undergoing significant procedures, a supportive and understanding environment is crucial for both the animal's comfort and the owner's peace of mind. The ability to accommodate urgent cases, as evidenced by a dog owner desperately seeking help for their ill pet when other clinics were unavailable, further suggests a flexible and responsive operational style that prioritizes animal welfare. The existence of a "Saturday morning clinic from 10:00-12:00" also highlights a commitment to providing accessible care outside of typical weekday hours, catering to the needs of working pet owners. This flexibility contributes to a more convenient and less stressful experience for families in crisis.
Chautauqua Veterinary Services, operating as a full-fledged "Pet Hospital," offers a broad spectrum of veterinary services, indicating capabilities beyond basic vaccinations and preventative care. Based on customer testimonials, their services include:
- Emergency and Urgent Care: The ability to see an acutely ill dog on short notice, when 13 other local vets could not, demonstrates a critical capacity for emergency and urgent care. This responsiveness is invaluable for pet owners facing unexpected health crises.
- Diagnostic Services: Although not explicitly detailed, the process of diagnosing a mammary lump suggests the availability of diagnostic tools and expertise. The initial assessment by Dr. Rice, involving antibiotics, steroid shots, and anti-inflammatory medication for a festering lump, indicates a methodical approach to managing complex conditions.
- Surgical Procedures: A standout service is the successful removal of a mammary lump from an 11-year-old dog, Lily, after another clinic quoted an unaffordable price. This highlights their capability to perform significant surgical interventions. The positive outcome and the diligent post-operative follow-up by Dr. Rice speak volumes about the quality of surgical care and patient recovery protocols.
- Medication and Treatment Management: Prescription and administration of antibiotics, steroids, and anti-inflammatory medications are standard practices, as evidenced by Lily's treatment. This indicates a comprehensive approach to managing various illnesses and conditions.
- General Wellness and Consultations: While specific routine check-ups aren't detailed in the reviews, the overall positive experience and the establishment of Dr. Rice as a new "regular veterinarian" for one family suggest they offer general veterinary consultations and wellness services that build long-term relationships.
- Compassionate End-of-Life Discussions: The comment, "he also cares about animals and understands owners when they're not ready to let go," suggests that Dr. Rice engages in sensitive and realistic discussions about prognosis and end-of-life care, supporting owners through difficult decisions with empathy.
Several features distinguish Chautauqua Veterinary Services from other practices:
- Exceptional Affordability: This is perhaps one of their most lauded features. The striking contrast in pricing – $800 for a complex lump removal surgery including two visits, compared to another clinic's quote of $4000 for just the procedure – highlights a profound commitment to making quality veterinary care accessible. This suggests a practice model that prioritizes animal welfare over maximizing profits, which is a rare and highly valued trait.
- Compassionate and Attentive Care: The recurrent praise for Dr. Rice's kindness, his willingness to "listen and took time," and his "realistic and honest" approach underscores a deeply compassionate practice. The follow-up calls and text messages for post-operative care, as described by Lily's owner, exemplify an extraordinary level of personal attention and genuine concern. This individualized care fosters trust and reassurance.
- Flexibility and Accessibility: The Saturday morning clinic is a significant feature, providing a much-needed option for pet owners with busy schedules. The ability to accommodate urgent, unplanned visits when other clinics are unavailable further solidifies their role as a dependable resource for the community.
- Honest and Realistic Communication: Dr. Rice is described as "realistic and honest" in his assessments. This transparency, even when delivering difficult news about a pet's prognosis, is crucial for owners to make informed decisions and builds a strong foundation of trust.
- Strong Community Recommendation: The fact that Dr. Rice was recommended through "several friends" and social media speaks to a strong positive reputation within the local community. Word-of-mouth referrals are often the most powerful indicators of a service's quality and reliability.
While explicit promotional campaigns are not detailed, the strong positive reviews serve as the most compelling form of promotion for Chautauqua Veterinary Services. The story of Dr. Rice providing affordable and life-saving surgery, coupled with his genuine care and follow-up, acts as powerful testimonials that would naturally attract new clients. The existence of the Saturday morning clinic itself is a promotional feature, signaling convenience and availability.
The practice's reputation for being "not in it for the money" is a significant draw, especially for owners who may be struggling with high veterinary costs. This ethical stance is a powerful marketing tool in itself, appealing to a broad demographic of pet owners who prioritize genuine care and affordability. While there's no mention of specific social media campaigns or discount programs, the consistent positive feedback on platforms like Facebook (where the initial recommendation for Dr. Rice was found) indicates an organic and effective form of community engagement. The direct and personal follow-up by Dr. Rice via phone calls and text messages after a major surgery is a level of service that far exceeds typical expectations and undoubtedly contributes to client loyalty and positive word-of-mouth.
In conclusion, Chautauqua Veterinary Services, under the expert and compassionate care of Dr. Rice, represents a highly valuable "Pet Hospital" for residents of Stow, NY, and the surrounding areas. Its commitment to providing accessible, affordable, and high-quality veterinary care for a range of needs, from urgent conditions to complex surgeries, sets it apart. The emphasis on genuine care, honest communication, and unwavering support for both pets and their owners makes it a highly recommended choice for comprehensive veterinary services.

May 25, 2025 · Jody FitchMy 11 year old female dog Lily had developed a lump in her mammory area. Initially took her to Jamestown Veterinary and they quoted 4k to take care of her which is unaffordable and did nothing but poke the lump with a needle to see what would come out. About a week after that visit, the lump doubled in size and had a hole that festered. I got her in to see Dr. Rice and he gave her antibiotics, a steroid shot, and some anti-inflammatory medication. He was realistic and honest; the lump and hole were bad. Dr. Rice removed the lump 2 days ago and Lily is home and doing great. Dr. Rice called the day we took her home to see how she was doing. He has kept in contact through text message to see she is doing ok. The entire procedure including both visits totaled $800, very reasonable. This vet is not in it for the money, he also cares about animals and understands owners when they're not ready to let go. I fully understand she may develop another lump and she may not have a lot of time left but I'm happy he was willing to try for me and for Lily. Very happy. Highly recommend.
May 18, 2025 · Elizabeth SouthwickI absolutely love this place! Everyone is so pleasant and easy to work with. Dr.Rice is extremely knowledgeable, and accommodating. No long waiting times, they get people in and out, without making you feel rushed, and their prices are affordable.
Apr 28, 2025 · Erin VanGorderNice place, new puppy owner, and we made appointments and got flea/tick meds right away. Very accommodating. I've heard great things and can see why.
Apr 24, 2025 · Steven ThorpeMy 6 month old kitten was spayed, I have never had a female cat before only males, so when I had concerns after hours Dr. Rice took care of the situation himself and talked to me on the phone and told me I could call him with any concerns! I love that he takes care of his own emergencies and doesn’t send you to Buffalo or Erie. My most favorite vet yet!!
