BEWARE DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE!!! I write this review with a heavy heart.. If I could, I would give this establishment a negative zero because they don't even deserve one star from me. I took my small Yorkie here for the first time, because he was not feeling well and was having labored breathing. Before I get into this review allow me to provide a little back history. My dog was ten years old. Has never been sick, never been to the emergency vet, all of his shots/vaccinations were up to date and has had yearly appointments with this vet, also located in New Milford. He was such a joyful and happy dog very playful and full of life still. We took very good care of him and ensured his health was monitored. So going to the emergency vet was very new to both me and my husband. The morning of 3/19/25, I contacted his vet because my yorkie woke up breathing extremely heavy. I described his symptoms to her over the phone and she urged me to take him to the emergency vet due to his labored breathing. Me and my husband did just that immediately and walked into Candlewood Animal Hospital, which they did accommodate us as a walk in. He was seen by veterinarian Katelyn Bakewell. At first, we were happy with the service and the clean atmosphere including Katelyn's demeanor. We came in with a video of our dog breathing heavily and explained he had no prior history of any conditions. She suggested they do an Xray of his chest which we agreed to. After the X-rays, she stated she wasn't a hundred percent certain of his prognosis, but suggested possibly asthma due to some congestion seen on his lungs from his X-rays. BUT that she didn't want to jump to any extremes and deemed it as NOT SERIOUS and leaned more towards asthma. At this point she gave him a steroid shot with antibiotics to take home. She told us he was otherwise very healthy and assured us he would be fine. She informed us to follow up with her two days later. We agreed and left to care for our baby. This is what is really hard to decipher. There was no sense of URGENCY or a sense of a SERIOUS UNDERLYING issue with our pet.. So we did as advised and took our beloved pet home and followed the directions provided. From that point forward, things took a turn which we never would have expected.. Our little guy just got worse as the hours ticked. He had a seizure shortly after and passed away just hours after seeing Katelyn. We rushed him to a 24 hour emergency hospital in Newton CT, which they confirmed that he passed. When speaking to the vet's there, they stated it could have been a misdiagnosis and was more serious than originally diagnosed. I'm writing this review because if me and my husband had any indicators from Katelyn, regarding a more serious concern with our pet EVEN if she couldn't pinpoint the root cause, tell us as pet parents "Hey, I think you should take him to another hospital. This may be more serious". Especially, that he was so tiny (7 pounds). But because that urgency wasn't there, we thought all we had to do is give him his medication prescribed and he would feel better soon. How does a healthy and young dog pass within hours of you stating "Your healthy dog is fine and it's just asthma" My dog has never been diagnosed with asthma. Me and my husband should have taken him for a second opinion directly after seeing Katelyn. We will live with this regret forever. Had we done so, maybe our beloved would still be here today. Please do your due diligence when seeing a vet or specialist. And please get second opinions if you feel unsure. If your like me and my husband, your pet is more than a dog/cat/pet.. He or she is a human, a baby.. and just like a human being or a baby, we try to protect them in every way possible. And the horror of losing them, especially so suddenly and rapidly.. is tragic and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. We will be doing an autopsy to nail down the root cause including if the proper medication and or dosages were administered properly. Sincerely, A grieving parent

Welcome to Candlewood Animal Hospital
Welcome to Candlewood Animal Hospital, a dedicated pet hospital located at 117 Kent Rd, New Milford, CT 06776, USA. Serving the local community, Candlewood Animal Hospital aims to provide comprehensive care for your beloved animal companions. As a pet hospital, they offer a range of services focused on maintaining and improving the health and well-being of pets. While primarily a veterinary service provider, they also feature an on-site pharmacy, making it convenient for pet owners to obtain necessary medications and supplies directly after their pet's consultation or treatment.
The physical environment of Candlewood Animal Hospital is often a crucial factor for pet owners seeking care. Based on available information, one customer review mentions a "clean atmosphere," suggesting that the hospital strives to maintain a hygienic and comfortable setting for both pets and their owners. A clean environment is essential in a veterinary setting to minimize the risk of infection and ensure a pleasant experience. However, it's important to note that this is based on a single positive comment regarding cleanliness.
Candlewood Animal Hospital offers a variety of services expected from a general practice veterinary hospital. These typically include routine check-ups and wellness examinations, vaccinations, diagnostic services such as X-rays, and treatment for illnesses and injuries. One customer explicitly mentioned their pet receiving an X-ray. The availability of diagnostic tools like X-rays is a significant feature, enabling veterinarians to assess internal conditions and aid in accurate diagnoses. The review also mentions the administration of a steroid shot and take-home antibiotics, indicating that the hospital provides immediate treatment and prescribed medications as needed.
A key feature of Candlewood Animal Hospital, implied by its nature as a pet hospital, is the expertise of its veterinary staff. One positive review specifically praises "Doctors Baker and Maisel," highlighting their positive interactions with a "nervous pup" and commending their service as "amazing." This suggests that the hospital has skilled and compassionate veterinarians who can handle pets with varying temperaments and provide quality care. The reviewer also noted the prices as "very fair," which can be an important consideration for pet owners.
However, it is crucial to address a significantly negative review that presents a starkly contrasting experience. This detailed account describes a pet owner's devastating loss of their young and seemingly healthy Yorkie hours after a visit to Candlewood Animal Hospital. The review alleges that the veterinarian, Katelyn Bakewell, initially diagnosed the dog's labored breathing as possibly asthma, deemed it "not serious," and administered a steroid shot and antibiotics. The pet's condition reportedly worsened rapidly, leading to a seizure and death shortly after returning home. The grieving owner recounts that a subsequent visit to a 24-hour emergency hospital suggested a potential misdiagnosis and a more serious underlying issue.
This negative review raises serious concerns about the diagnostic accuracy and the perceived lack of urgency in the care provided in this specific instance. The reviewer explicitly states that there was "no sense of URGENCY or a sense of a SERIOUS UNDERLYING issue" communicated by the veterinarian. The owner expresses regret for not seeking a second opinion immediately and emphasizes the profound grief and the feeling that their pet might still be alive if the situation had been handled differently. They also mention plans for an autopsy to determine the cause of death and whether the administered treatment was appropriate.
It is important for potential clients to consider both the positive and negative feedback when evaluating Candlewood Animal Hospital. The positive review highlights positive interactions with specific doctors and fair pricing, suggesting that some pet owners have had satisfactory experiences. Conversely, the detailed negative review raises serious allegations regarding misdiagnosis and the handling of a critical situation. As an objective introduction based on available internet information, it is our responsibility to present both sides of the feedback.
As a pet hospital with an on-site pharmacy, Candlewood Animal Hospital offers the convenience of obtaining prescribed medications directly after a veterinary consultation. This can save pet owners time and ensure that they have immediate access to the necessary treatments for their animals. The pharmacy would typically stock a range of medications, including antibiotics, pain relievers, and other drugs commonly used in veterinary practice. This integration of services can be particularly beneficial for pets requiring immediate medication or ongoing treatment.
Given the conflicting customer experiences, it is difficult to provide definitive promotional information. The positive review acts as a form of positive word-of-mouth, highlighting good experiences with specific doctors and pricing. However, the severity of the negative review overshadows any potential promotional messaging that could be derived from the limited positive feedback. Potential clients are advised to weigh all available information carefully and perhaps seek additional opinions or conduct further research before entrusting their pet's care to Candlewood Animal Hospital.
In conclusion, Candlewood Animal Hospital in New Milford, CT, is a pet hospital that offers veterinary services and has an on-site pharmacy. While one customer review praises the clean environment, the skills of specific doctors, and fair pricing, another detailed review recounts a tragic experience involving a rapid deterioration and death of a pet following a diagnosis that was later questioned by another veterinary facility. This information underscores the importance for pet owners to conduct thorough research and consider all available feedback when choosing a veterinary care provider for their beloved animals. It also highlights the potential benefits of an on-site pharmacy for convenience in obtaining medications. However, the serious allegations in the negative review warrant careful consideration and potentially seeking second opinions in critical situations.

Mar 28, 2025 · Jasmena RodriguezLiterally the best. Doctors Baker and Maisel are amazing with my nervous pup and the prices are so fair. You guys have a client for life! Dash and I are very satisfied.
Mar 10, 2025 · Jackie VaughanI have given high praise reviews in the past. I have brought all my pets since 1986 to see Dr. Maizel. At that time I had a rough collie named Raya, then 2 cats Houdini and Owen Beanie. During that time, I became a foster mom for numerous greyhounds. Of course I often failed and they stayed with me. Dr. Maizel is the dog/cat whisperer of New Milford and I would trust any of my pet babies to him. He listens to you and will discuss honest care and tough choices. That said, his staff have been so empathetic when difficult end of life decisions are necessary. I can't thank Dr. Maizel and his staff for the 39 years of compassionate and skillful care they have always provided. Donna Edwards
May 04, 2025 · Wisteria Leigh EdwardsHorrendous service. Waited for over twenty minutes with a nervous dog and another out in the car. When I walked out, there were no cars in the parking lot. This is after they beg and hound (sorry) you to make an appointment. I wasn't thrilled with them in the first place. but this was the nail in the coffin. Now I hope I don't have to struggle to get my files.
May 13, 2025 · Steve KatzDr. Maizel is the most compassionate and caring vet I have ever had. He’s been our vet for the past almost 30 years. You can’t go wrong with Dr. Maizel and his other colleague, Dr. Bakewell. The staff are friendly and responsive when you have an emergency. I would never go anywhere else.
