Barker Animal has been the most amazing Vet for us. They’ve walked with us as we said good-bye to our family dog and they’ve been there as we’ve welcomed three more back to the house. The fear free environment helps our dogs feel right at ease! We recommend Barker to anyone who ask. They’ve become a crucial part of our care team for our pups! Love from Gizmo, Luna & Zoe Childs

Operating within the category of Pet Hospital, Barker Animal Hospital has garnered exceptional praise from local pet owners for its unwavering commitment to providing a fear-free and low-stress environment for animals under their care. The testimonials from loyal clients highlight not only their compassionate approach during difficult times, such as saying goodbye to a beloved pet, but also their exceptional ability to cater to the unique needs of even the most anxious and fearful animals, particularly rescue pets with challenging pasts. Barker Animal Hospital positions itself as a crucial part of the care team for local pups and other companion animals, emphasizing a gentle and understanding approach to veterinary medicine.
The environment at Barker Animal Hospital is intentionally designed to minimize stress and anxiety in pets, a feature explicitly mentioned as a "fear free environment" that helps dogs feel "right at ease." This likely involves specific protocols, training of staff, and modifications to the clinic setting to reduce potential triggers of fear and anxiety in animals. This could include the use of calming pheromones, soft lighting, quiet examination rooms, non-slip flooring, and a generally relaxed atmosphere. The staff is likely trained in gentle handling techniques and positive reinforcement methods to make visits as comfortable as possible for even the most apprehensive patients. The emphasis on creating a fear-free environment distinguishes Barker Animal Hospital and makes it a preferred choice for owners of sensitive or previously traumatized pets.
The services offered at Barker Animal Hospital are likely comprehensive, extending beyond just routine check-ups. While the reviews specifically praise their compassionate end-of-life care and their ability to handle anxious pets, it can be inferred that they provide a full range of veterinary services to support the overall health and well-being of their patients. These typically include preventative care such as routine wellness examinations, vaccinations tailored to individual pet needs and lifestyles, and parasite control (including heartworm, flea, and tick prevention). Given their focus on creating a positive experience, they likely place a strong emphasis on client education regarding preventative measures and general pet care to maintain optimal health and minimize the need for stressful interventions.
In addition to preventative care, Barker Animal Hospital undoubtedly offers diagnostic services to identify and understand the underlying causes of illness or injury. This would likely include thorough physical examinations, in-house laboratory testing (such as blood work, urinalysis, and fecal exams), and potentially imaging capabilities like radiography (X-rays) to visualize internal structures. Their ability to accurately diagnose conditions is crucial for developing effective treatment plans that prioritize the pet's comfort and minimize stress. The fact that pet owners entrust Barker with their beloved animals, including those with significant anxiety, suggests a high level of confidence in their medical expertise and diagnostic acumen.
For pets requiring medical treatment, Barker Animal Hospital would provide a range of services, including the administration of medications, fluid therapy, and supportive care for various illnesses. Their commitment to a low-stress approach would extend to how these treatments are administered, likely involving patience, gentle handling, and positive reinforcement whenever possible. While the reviews do not explicitly mention surgical services, it is reasonable to assume that they offer common surgical procedures such as spaying and neutering, and potentially other soft tissue surgeries, always with a focus on the pet's comfort and safety. Anesthesia protocols would likely be carefully tailored and monitored, especially for anxious patients.
A significant feature of Barker Animal Hospital, repeatedly highlighted in the testimonials, is their exceptional staff. They are described as going "above and beyond" to ensure that even the most fearful pets, like Stanley the rescue from a puppy mill, have their "needed visits are as fearless and as stress free as possible." This level of dedication and personalized care is a major draw for pet owners who have struggled with other clinics that did not take their pet's anxiety into consideration. The staff's understanding, patience, and willingness to "bend over backwards" demonstrate a genuine commitment to the well-being of every animal they treat. The fact that they have become a "crucial part of our care team" speaks to the strong relationships they build with their clients and their pets.

Feb 01, 2025 · Bessie ChildsOur boys. Hercules on right loves coming to Barker...they treat our now veteran with such wonderful care. BUT... Stanley, on left with white chest. This is the amazing thing about Barker Animal Hospital...he is a rescue from a puppy mill. He is anxious and fearful of anyone, any place and any animal but for my husband and I, our home and his bro Hercules. ALL the staff and vets at Barker take the greatest care of him and bend over backwards to ensure his needed visits are as fearless and as stress free as possible. We came to Barker because of Stanley and a not great vet clinic that seemed not to take his past into consideration. We cannot say enough unbelievable wicked good things about Barker and every single person there. When they say they are "no fear certified" they mean it and then some! Thank you, thank you, thank you for all you do! If you are looking for the very best vet hospital in all of Hampton roads, look no further than Barker Animal Hospital...you won't be sorry!!!! Feb 01, 2025 · Priscilla SchultzMy dog Lilo and I have been going to barker for a couple years now and we love it!! I love that they offer a wellness plan. This makes it easier when those unexpected vet visits pop up. Especially since Lilo has seasonal allergies so I never know when she might have a flare up.
Feb 27, 2025 · Emily TempelmanThis is the only veterinary game in town. The health care plan are affordable and cover a lot of things so you rarely pay much out of pocket. We have brought all our dogs here for many years and it's been great. I am the proud papa of Nanner, sweetpea, chuggie and Albert and I will not bring them anywhere else. Top quality care and great staff, what's not to love. If you love your pets, let Barker love ❤️ your pets too.
Mar 08, 2025 · Allan LBarker Animal Hospital has taken care of my doodle Hank since he was a puppy and he is now 7. They are all so kind and good with my anxious pup. When he had several ticks on him from a camping trip and started showing Lyme symptoms I called and they took care of him promptly, did testing, diagnosed him, and set him up with a treatment plan that worked so well. The process made him very anxious and difficult to maneuver but the techs were so so patient and kind to him. He was back to normal in no time. I couldn’t be more thankful for Barker being there and taking my concerns seriously.
