While the staff (in general) are very kind and knowledgeable, I can't recommend their services. It is a very clearly corporate/money first operation. We took our dog in for a general wellness exam 2 months ago, and talked to the doctor about some GI issues and separation anxiety. We had to have 2 appointments and 3 rounds of medication to treat the GI ($250 later) and just found out 2 hours before our virtual visit to talk to the vet about adjusting meds for separation anxiety that it would be ANOTHER $73 exam fee. Note that we have only been able to talk to the vet once, which is insane for what we've paid. The primary vet tech, Emily, is also incredibly rude and prefers to interject or talk over you instead of listening to your concerns.

Comprehensive Veterinary Services

Banfield Pet Hospital provides an extensive array of veterinary services, focusing heavily on a proactive and preventive approach to pet healthcare. Their service offerings typically include:

  • General Wellness Exams: Regular comprehensive check-ups are a cornerstone of their care philosophy, covering major body systems to monitor your pet's overall physical condition.

  • Vaccinations: They offer all routinely recommended vaccinations for dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens, such as rabies, feline leukemia, and parvovirus, tailored to your pet's needs, lifestyle, and location.

  • Parasite Control: This includes screening and treatment plans for internal and external parasites, infestations, and secondary diseases, along with various options for parasite prevention and medications.

  • Diagnostic Services: Banfield utilizes various methods to diagnose and treat pet illnesses. This includes in-house laboratory diagnostics for same-day results, digital radiography for examining internal systems, and dental digital x-rays for evaluating oral health below the gumline.

  • Dental Care: Professional dental cleanings are provided to support oral health, and many locations also perform dental extractions and oral surgery.

  • Surgical Procedures: Beyond routine spays and neuters, some Banfield locations may offer soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries, all performed under anesthesia with pre-anesthetic testing.

  • Gastrointestinal Illness Diagnosis and Treatment: For pets experiencing upset stomachs or vomiting, they offer diagnostic services to determine appropriate remedies or diagnose underlying conditions.

  • End-of-Life Services: Compassionate care for pets nearing the end of their lives is also part of their offerings.

  • Virtual Care: Through their Optimum Wellness Plans, they offer virtual visits and 24/7 access to Vet Chat™ with a veterinary professional, providing convenient health advice and support.

Key Features and Promotional Information

One of Banfield Pet Hospital's most distinctive features is their Optimum Wellness Plans (OWPs). These are year-long, affordable preventive pet care packages that bundle various services for easy management and budgeting. They are designed to cover routine and annual services recommended for pets based on their species, age, and other factors. Key benefits of OWPs include:

  • Unlimited Office Visits: Pet owners on an OWP typically benefit from unlimited office visits at any of Banfield's over 1,000 locations nationwide, with no additional exam fees for these visits. This can be particularly beneficial for pets requiring frequent monitoring or follow-up, though customer reviews suggest clarifying what constitutes an "office visit" versus an "exam fee" if specific concerns arise.

  • Virtual Services: OWPs often include a specified number of virtual visits and 24/7 access to Vet Chat™, allowing pet owners to get advice from veterinary professionals remotely.

  • Comprehensive Preventive Care: Plans encompass routine vaccinations, comprehensive exams, and diagnostic testing such as blood work and fecal exams.

  • Budgeting Assistance: OWPs offer predictable costs, with options for monthly payments without interest fees. They also typically include a discount (ranging from 5% to 20% depending on the plan level) on many Banfield products and services not included in the OWP, such as certain prescriptions and additional medical tests.

  • Tailored Plans: There are various OWP options, including "Early Care" for puppies and kittens (some of which include a spay or neuter procedure), and "Active Care" and "Special Care" plans for adult pets, with higher tiers offering more diagnostic testing and services like professional dental cleanings.

Banfield emphasizes preventive care, aiming to catch potential health issues early, which can lead to better outcomes and potentially lower long-term costs. Their network of hospitals across the country means that a pet's records can be accessed at any Banfield location, providing continuity of care for traveling pet owners. Additionally, Banfield is part of the Mars Inc. family of companies, which also owns other significant veterinary health brands, demonstrating a strong backing in the pet care industry. They also highlight a commitment to sustainability and diversity within their operations.

Customer Experiences and Considerations

Customer reviews, such as those provided, offer a mixed perspective, reflecting experiences common to larger corporate veterinary practices. While many praise the kindness and knowledge of the staff, as evidenced by the positive feedback for "Dr. B" and the "super sweet" techs who go "above and beyond" for pets with chronic conditions like diabetes, some concerns are also raised.

  • Corporate Structure and Cost: Some clients perceive Banfield as a "corporate/money first operation," citing concerns about multiple appointments and additional fees, even for what might seem like follow-up discussions. It is important for clients to fully understand the fee structure, especially when dealing with complex or ongoing conditions, and to inquire about all potential costs upfront.

  • Communication and Consistency: The feedback about limited direct vet interaction and potential rudeness from certain staff members, like the mentioned "Emily," highlights the importance of clear communication channels and consistent customer service. While many staff members are highly regarded, individual experiences can vary, and it's advisable for pet owners to advocate for their concerns and seek clarification on treatment plans and associated costs.

Overall, Banfield Pet Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, offers a comprehensive range of veterinary services with a strong emphasis on preventive care through their Optimum Wellness Plans. Pet owners considering Banfield should evaluate their pet's specific needs, understand the OWP benefits, and communicate openly with the staff to ensure a positive and effective healthcare experience for their beloved companions.

Dr B is amazing with my son. I’m so grateful to have found a vet to deal with my baby’s diabetes - she really goes above and beyond for George. The techs are also super sweet!!

Dr Hanna Pyun was extremely friendly and generous for taking the time to help me get a food prescription card, so I could purchase some special food for my dog. I arrived after the vet closed, but she still took the time to help me and my puppy out and she did it with a smile and a great attitude the whole time. Thank you Dr Hanna Pyun for your kindness and this world would be a much better place if there were more people like you in it.

I am so grateful for the care my golden retriever Sue has received from the staff at Banfield! I have been taking him here since he was 8 weeks old. He was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder (ITP) in June so we have been coming in every 1-2 weeks to have his platelet levels checked. Everyone here, from the front desk staff, to the techs, to the vets (especially Dr. Cohen) is so nice and understanding…especially if we are running a few mins late or accidentally forget an appointment. Thank you for all you do!
