Services Offered

Woodland Dog Park provides comprehensive services and amenities focused on creating a safe, engaging, and enjoyable off-leash environment for dogs and their owners.

  • Divided Play Areas: The park is thoughtfully divided into two distinct, securely fenced sections: one large area for dogs weighing over 35 pounds, and a separate area for small dogs weighing 35 pounds or less. This separation ensures that dogs can play safely and comfortably with companions of similar size and play style.

  • Agility Equipment and Obstacles: Both the small and large dog areas are equipped with a variety of agility equipment and obstacles. These features provide additional mental and physical stimulation for athletic pups, encouraging them to jump, weave, and explore.

  • Spacious Running Fields: The park boasts a very large, spacious grassy area in both sections, providing ample room for dogs to run, chase, and engage in vigorous off-leash play, allowing them to burn off energy effectively.

  • Seating and Shade: Visitors will find picnic tables and benches within the dog park areas, offering comfortable shaded seating for owners to relax while their dogs play. This is a welcome amenity, especially during warmer months.

  • Water Fountain: A water fountain is typically available within the park, providing a convenient source of hydration for thirsty pups after their playtime. (Note: While generally available, it's always wise to bring your own water as a backup, especially on hot days, as fountains can occasionally be out of service for maintenance.)

  • Waste Stations: The park aims for cleanliness by providing receptacles for dog waste. While specific mention of bag dispensers isn't always prominent in reviews, owners are expected to bring their own bags and clean up after their pets promptly.

  • Community Hub: Beyond physical amenities, the park fosters a strong sense of community. Owners gather, chat, and watch their dogs, often forming friendships and creating a supportive environment for both people and pets.

Features / Highlights

Woodland Dog Park is celebrated by its users for several key features that contribute to its standing as a top-tier dog park in Northwest Indiana.

  • Very Large and Spacious Areas: The sheer size of the park is a consistent highlight. Its expansive grassy areas, particularly for large dogs, provide abundant room for energetic runs, games of fetch, and group play without feeling crowded. This is a major draw for dogs who "LOVE" to run and play freely.

  • Securely Divided Sections: The clear and secure division between small (35 lbs or less) and large (over 35 lbs) dog areas is a critical safety and comfort feature. This allows dogs to play with appropriate companions, reducing stress for smaller dogs and ensuring vigorous play for larger ones.

  • Agility Equipment: The presence of obstacles and agility equipment adds an extra layer of fun and challenge for dogs, promoting both physical fitness and mental engagement beyond simple running.

  • Free Entry: A significant advantage for local residents is that there is no fee to use the dog park. This makes it a highly accessible and cost-effective option for regular dog exercise, standing out from many other permit-based dog parks.

  • Adjoining "People Park" and Event Space: The dog park's location within Woodland Park, which also features a "people park" and facilities for gatherings, enhances its overall appeal. This makes it a versatile destination for families who want to combine a dog park visit with other recreational activities or even host celebrations. One reviewer noted attending a "celebration of life" here, highlighting the park's multi-purpose utility.

  • Well-Kept and Clean: Visitors frequently comment on the park being "well kept" and "clean," with "well marked signs." This attention to maintenance contributes to a pleasant and welcoming environment for all users.

  • Community Focus: Beyond the physical amenities, the park is known for fostering a "wonderful community of people." Owners often chat and make friends, creating a supportive and social atmosphere for both themselves and their dogs, with dogs also forming comfortable relationships.

Promotions or Special Offers

Woodland Dog Park in Portage, Indiana, stands out significantly because it offers a fundamental "promotion" that benefits all local users: there is no fee to use the dog park. Unlike many other managed dog parks that require annual memberships or daily permits, Woodland Dog Park provides free access to its facilities. This is a considerable advantage for dog owners, making regular visits highly affordable and accessible.

While there aren't traditional seasonal discounts or loyalty programs, the absence of a usage fee itself is the primary "special offer" provided by the City of Portage. This commitment to free public access encourages widespread use and ensures that more dogs in the community can benefit from dedicated off-leash play.

Despite being free to enter, all dogs using the park are required to display current dog tags and have up-to-date vaccinations. Animal Control and park personnel regularly check for these, ensuring that all dogs in the park are healthy and legally compliant. This policy helps maintain a safe environment for all users.

Other general rules for the park include:

  • Dogs must remain on leashes until safely inside the designated dog park area.

  • Owners must limit the number of dogs they bring to two per visit.

  • Children under the age of 13 are not allowed in the dog park unless accompanied by an adult.

  • Aggressive dogs are strictly prohibited and must be removed immediately if aggression is shown.

  • Choke, spike, prong, or pinch collars are not allowed inside the park.

  • No human food or dog food is allowed in the park, though small training treats may be permitted.

  • No smoking, alcohol, or drugs are permitted.

  • Owners are responsible for cleaning up their dog's waste using provided receptacles (bringing your own bags is advisable).

  • Female dogs in heat are not allowed.

These rules, rather than promotions, are in place to ensure a safe, clean, and positive experience for all visitors, highlighting the park's commitment to responsible pet ownership within a free access model.

First experience at a dog park and it was great. This park has play equipment for the dogs and a fenced in area for the dogs to run around unleased. My son loved hanging out with our dog and meeting new friends.

After we left Lake Michigan the girls had a moment to play at Woodland Dog Park. There were a few dogs around so we kept our distance because of our social anxiety. The girls still had fun tracking the scent of squirrels and alerting when they hit. Eventually they tired out and we moved on.

Do not go here if you're a railfan - train photographer. They will turn you into a criminal. I was going here for over a year with no problem. I'm a railroad historian and wanted to write about the Baltimore and Ohio's presence here, but no! I'm not welcome here and was threatened with arrest! Do not come here, The people are very unfriendly!
