Definitely one of the pups’ favorite places. We usually go at night, it’s pretty empty around then, but even during daylight hours it’s never been too crowded or crazy.

It’s a testament to Albuquerque’s commitment to providing quality outdoor recreational areas for its pet-owning community. Whether you're looking for a quiet evening stroll with your pup or an energetic afternoon playdate, this park caters to various needs, ensuring a positive experience for everyone.
Tom Bolack Dog Park is strategically located at 2000 Dakota St NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110, USA. This address places it conveniently in Northeast Albuquerque, offering excellent accessibility for residents from various neighborhoods. A significant advantage of its location is its convenience to I-40, making it an ideal stop for those embarking on cross-country trips, as noted by appreciative travelers.
As part of the larger Tom Bolack Urban Forest Park, the dog park benefits from being situated within a green space, providing a pleasant environment. The area typically offers ample parking, ensuring that visitors can easily find a spot. Its integration into the urban forest setting means it offers a natural, less urbanized feel compared to some other city dog parks, despite its central location. The park is well-regarded for its accessibility and is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, providing flexible hours for visits.
Tom Bolack Dog Park is designed to cater to the diverse needs of the canine community and their owners, offering essential services for an optimal off-leash experience:
- Separate areas for small and large dogs: This crucial feature ensures that smaller, more timid dogs can play safely without intimidation from larger, more energetic breeds, and vice versa. It promotes a safer and more enjoyable experience for all.
- Fenced, off-leash play areas: The primary service is providing secure, fully fenced enclosures where dogs can run, chase, and socialize freely without the constraints of a leash, which is vital for their physical and mental well-being.
- Water access: The park features water available (though spigots might be off during freezing temperatures in winter), often with large spigots and communal water buckets, ensuring dogs can stay hydrated during their playtime, especially important in New Mexico's dry climate.
- Picnic tables and trash receptacles: These amenities enhance the comfort and convenience for human visitors, allowing for relaxed supervision and promoting cleanliness within the park.
- Ample room for running: Both the small and large dog sections offer generous space, allowing dogs to truly stretch their legs and engage in high-energy play.
Tom Bolack Dog Park distinguishes itself with several key features that contribute to its popularity and functionality:
- Spacious design: Visitors consistently praise the "lots of room to run in the big dog side" and the overall size, noting it's "big enough for him to run." This ample space is a major draw.
- Separate areas for different dog sizes: The existence of distinct small and large dog parks is a highly valued feature, catering to the safety and comfort of all canine visitors.
- Never too crowded or crazy: Even during daylight hours, the park is described as "never too crowded or crazy," which can be a significant advantage for those seeking a less overwhelming environment for their dogs. Night visits are also noted to be "pretty empty," perfect for quiet playtime.
- Convenient access to I-40: Its location makes it incredibly easy to access for both local Albuquerque residents and those traveling cross-country, making it a popular and practical stop.
- Water availability: The presence of water sources (spigots and shared buckets) is a critical amenity for dogs, especially in Albuquerque's climate, ensuring they stay hydrated.
- Friendly atmosphere: The park is described as having "friendly people and dogs," fostering a welcoming community for pet owners.
- Cleanliness: Despite being a "dirt park," it is noted to be "clean and the people and dogs were great!" This indicates a responsible user base and good maintenance.
- Urban forest setting: Being part of the Tom Bolack Urban Forest Park offers a more natural and serene backdrop for dog play compared to typical urban parks.

Jun 10, 2025 · Kaitlin Chase ReeseThis is a great dog park. Lots of room to run in the big dog side. Very convenient to I-40. We’ve stopped here twice (coming & going) on a cross country trip. Never saw any loiterers or homeless (mentioned in another review) either time.
Nov 23, 2024 · Kathryn MarchI am so happy there is a Dog Park for Small little Dogs!! I went there yesterday and was so amazed to see they have added a park for small dogs. The big dog park was the only thing that was there when I used to go there years ago. It is pretty big and spacious. It could handle the after 4:45 or 5pm big crowd of big dogs, which could be overwhelming for the little dogs! It is so nice that the little dogs have their own park. Yay! I hope more little dogs will come to the park to play together. My dog loves to play with only other little dogs, so I was happy to bring him to the park. I took photos of the small dogs' park and hope more small dogs will come and play! It has water and other items that you will see in the photos. There was a tennis ball there too. Hahaha! My dog is the little tan chihuahua.:-)
Jan 14, 2022 · KJ AlwaysThis I s a nice little woodsy pRk but d I don't fit my specific needs. I am elderly and severely disabled. There was a significant walk from parking. A busy street. There was a picnic table, but hard for me to get there. For me walking is painful. Now my chihuahua was very happy. Found some nice larger dogs to interact with. A nice man offered to take him along for a run. No water for Max, though. Extremely windy day, which made my hay fever flare. I only had one kleenex that blew away. Had to make Max leave. I lost my grip on ..his leash and was afraid what would happen to him. Fortunately, a man came and helped with dog. Not going there again
May 20, 2025 · Carol GilesIt’s a nice big dog park I bring my dog almost every other day, he loves it. There is a paved trail with a picnic area and workout equipment that leads out to the tennis courts on Louisiana, however, there is a huge community of unhoused individuals on the trail.
