This accessible location makes it a convenient destination for residents across Kansas City, Kansas, and even those from nearby areas. St. John's Dog Park, as a public amenity, provides several key services through its design and maintenance, focusing on creating a safe and functional environment for dogs and their owners.

  • Separate Play Areas: The park is thoughtfully divided into two fenced-in areas: one for small dogs (35 lbs and under) and another for larger dogs (over 35 lbs). This separation ensures that dogs of different sizes and play styles can interact safely and comfortably, minimizing potential conflicts.
  • Waste Disposal: To promote cleanliness and responsible pet ownership, the park provides dog waste bags and trash cans for easy disposal of pet waste. This essential service helps maintain a hygienic environment for all visitors.
  • Fenced Enclosures: Secure, fully fenced perimeters offer a safe off-leash environment where dogs can run and play freely, giving owners peace of mind. While some fences may be under 5 feet in places, requiring owners of giant dogs to be vigilant, the overall security is a key benefit.
  • Open Access: The park does not require a membership fee, making it a free and accessible resource for all local dog owners. It is open from sunrise to sunset, providing ample opportunity for visits.

St. John's Dog Park stands out with several features and highlights that contribute to its appeal among Kansas residents.

  • Stunning City Skyline Views: A remarkable highlight, as mentioned by visitors, is the "Beautiful view of the Greater Kansas City SKYLINE." This picturesque backdrop makes the park not just a place for dogs to play, but also a scenic spot for owners to enjoy the urban landscape, especially during sunrise or sunset.
  • Peaceful Atmosphere: Despite its proximity to a major interstate, the park maintains a surprisingly "Quiet Peaceful" ambiance, allowing for a relaxing experience for both dogs and their owners.
  • Well-Maintained Grassy Areas: The park features "nice green grass" providing a pleasant surface for dogs to run and play on. While some areas, particularly in the large dog section, can become muddy or have longer grass, the overall effort to maintain a green space is appreciated.
  • Community of Responsible Owners: Reviews suggest a community of "Nice people" who are mindful of rotating dogs and ensuring all dogs behave well. This contributes to a positive and harmonious environment within the park.
  • Ease of Access for Travelers: Its location near the interstate makes it a convenient stop for those on road trips, offering a much-needed break and exercise opportunity for their canine companions.

Pros: Nice green grass, good square footage, pretty nice view. Cons: No water, no shade, no benches. Muddy in spots. Grass is long so it’s hard to see poop. One latch is broken on the gate. Smaller than I expected since it’s just a fenced and sodded field with no amenities. Also (relevant if you have a large or giant dog) the fence is under 5 feet in places and our giant dog was tempted to try to jump over when she was ready to go. Other notes: There is a small dog side. It’s very small. There are poop bags and trash cans which is fantastic. The poop bags that are here are all jumbled up and wet. Street parking and plenty available. Also, I’m from California so I may very well be spoiled, idk.

Small park but good enough for our dogs to work off some energy during our roadtrip across the country. Nice views of the city skyline.

Big fenced in park. Has been empty when I've gone. Has some benches to look over at the city.
