Beautiful park, a lot of green areas, the fields are well taken care of. There is a lot of space for kids to enjoy themselves. I am currently in a softball league here. Only downside is that in the weekends the bathrooms are not open, and you have to use 1 portable bathroom.

Welcome to Rover's Run Dog Park (Membership required)

For dog owners in Illinois, particularly within the Homewood and Flossmoor communities, finding a reliable and high-quality space for their canine companions to exercise and socialize is a significant priority. Rover's Run Dog Park, nestled in Homewood, IL, offers an exceptional solution, providing a dedicated and meticulously maintained environment for off-leash fun. Unlike public parks that might be open to everyone, Rover's Run operates on a membership basis, ensuring a controlled and safe experience for all its furry patrons. This article will provide a comprehensive overview of Rover's Run Dog Park, highlighting its unique features, accessibility, and why it has become a cherished part of the local dog-loving community in Illinois.

Rover's Run Dog Park is a three-acre, fully fenced facility managed by the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District. It is designed to be a premier destination for dogs to run freely, interact with other canines, and enjoy the outdoors in a secure setting. The park is renowned for its beautiful green areas and well-maintained fields, offering ample space for dogs to sprint, play fetch, and engage in various activities. The membership requirement fosters a community of responsible dog owners, contributing to a consistently positive and friendly atmosphere. This structured approach helps ensure that all dogs using the park are vaccinated and healthy, providing peace of mind for owners. While it's primarily a dog park, its integration into a larger park area means that the surrounding green spaces are also well-kept, adding to the overall aesthetic and enjoyment for visitors.

Rover's Run Dog Park is conveniently located at 191st Street and Center Avenue in Homewood, IL 60430, USA. This central location within Homewood makes it highly accessible for residents of the village and surrounding areas. As part of a larger park complex, it benefits from substantial green space and a relatively easy approach. It's important for visitors, especially those from out of town, to note that access to the dog park area is controlled by a code-protected entrance, emphasizing its membership-only status. This means spontaneous visits without a valid membership tag and key fob will not grant access to the fenced dog park area. For members, ample parking is available nearby, ensuring a smooth arrival. The park operates daily from dawn to dusk, offering generous hours for exercise. For new applicants, obtaining membership involves a straightforward process through the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District, which helps maintain the quality and exclusivity of this valuable local resource.

Rover's Run Dog Park, as a managed facility of the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District, offers several key services and amenities designed to enhance the safety, comfort, and enjoyment for its members and their dogs:

  • Membership-Only Access: The primary service is exclusive access to a well-maintained, fully fenced off-leash dog park for registered members. This ensures a more controlled and secure environment.
  • Separate Training Area: The park includes a separate training area with its own entrance. This allows for focused training sessions or provides a quieter space for dogs who might prefer less chaotic interaction.
  • Waste Management: To maintain cleanliness, the park provides waste receptacles throughout the area, and members are expected to pick up after their dogs.
  • Water Fountains: There is a drinking fountain available for both humans and canines, ensuring that both pets and their owners can stay hydrated during their visit.
  • Double-Gated Entry: For enhanced safety and to prevent accidental escapes, the entrance to the dog park features a convenient double-gated system.
  • Benches and Covered Structures: The park offers three park benches and two covered structures, providing comfortable seating and shade for owners while their dogs play.

Rover's Run Dog Park boasts several features and highlights that make it a highly desirable location for dog owners in Illinois:

  • Beautiful and Well-Maintained Grounds: The park is frequently described as beautiful, with well-kept green areas and fields. This attention to maintenance ensures a pleasant environment for both dogs and owners.
  • Ample Space for Play: With three acres of fenced area, dogs have plenty of room to run at full speed, play fetch, and socialize without feeling crowded.
  • Walking Path: A dedicated walking path encircles the entire park, allowing owners to comfortably stroll and get their own exercise while their dogs enjoy off-leash freedom.
  • Community of Responsible Owners: Members consistently highlight the courteousness of other patrons and the general lack of issues with aggressive dogs. This creates a welcoming and safe community atmosphere.
  • Secure Environment: The fully fenced perimeter, combined with the double-gated entry and membership requirement, provides a high level of security, giving owners peace of mind.
  • Shaded Areas: The presence of covered structures offers much-needed shade on sunny days, enhancing comfort for visitors.
  • ADA Accessible: The park is designed to be ADA accessible, ensuring that individuals with disabilities can also enjoy the facilities.

As a facility of the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District, Rover's Run Dog Park offers its "promotions" in the form of its accessible membership structure rather than typical retail sales. The annual membership fee is designed to be highly beneficial for local residents. For residents of the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District, annual membership is FREE for the first dog. For non-residents, the annual fee is $45 for the first dog. For either residents or non-residents, each additional dog costs $5 annually. This fee structure makes Rover's Run an incredibly cost-effective option for local residents to provide their dogs with regular, safe, and stimulating off-leash exercise. A replacement key fob costs $10. It is important to note that all dogs must be registered with the Park District and meet specific vaccination requirements (including Rabies, Distemper, Parvovirus, Bordetella, and Leptospirosis, as well as being dewormed and on heartworm/flea prevention). Puppies must be at least four months old. While there aren't seasonal sales on the membership, the value provided by consistent access to such a well-maintained facility, especially the free access for residents, acts as a continuous incentive. The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District also occasionally hosts "Trail Hounds" events, which are free, on-leash walks open to all friendly canines, offering another way for the community to engage with their pets, though these are separate from the Rover's Run off-leash area.

Traveler beware: this is not a public dog park. We pulled off after finding this dog park on Google, to give our two dogs a chance to stretch their legs and get a break from the car only to find a code protected entrance with no alternative. I walked my boys around in the field nearby, but was thoroughly disappointed that they couldn't truly run or play. On 12 hour drives, it's always vital to look for sanctuary and safe places to take the dogs: this is not one of them.

Have only been here once, but plan to come back. Membership required through village. A little wet and muddy today, but that is to be expected with the weather. The facility is well designed and nicely maintained. Met a few other dogs and owners and everyone was friendly.

AVOID! PRIVATE MEMBERSHIP ONLY and infested with fleas/mosquitoes!! I brought my dog on vacation with me to the Chicago area from San Francisco, California. I have discovered that regardless of all the open land in the suburban areas of Chicago, most places are not dog friendly— unless they are made out of porcelain (Flossmore). I searched for a dog park that wasn’t too far away and did find one in Homewood. From their website, it looked like a lovely place. Unfortunately, The Rover’s Run dog park is private; the website does not mention anything about it being private or being members only. I don’t think this state is friendly or accepting for people with dogs, I think it’s focus is for ripping off property owners and other people with money. The Homewood Dog Park Members also really need to invest in some pest control. I am standing and writing this in the area directly outside of the locked gated dog run; it is infested with mosquitoes and fleas. I’m actually kind of happy I took the time to write this and discovered it before I went inside and infested both myself & my dog.
