Interesting park. It's a very large wooded and hilly space with trails around and through. Poop bags and trash at the entrance, but no water. Given the space and the terrain, this park is probably not well suited if your dog does not have good recall.

Welcome to Quarry Run Dog Park
For dog owners across Maine, finding the perfect outdoor space where our canine companions can truly thrive is always a top priority. In Portland, one unique and highly valued destination stands out: Quarry Run Dog Park. This isn't your typical flat, open field; instead, it offers a distinct and enriching experience, immersing dogs and their owners in a large, natural, and fully fenced environment. It’s a place where pups can explore wooded trails, navigate hills, and socialize freely, all within a secure boundary.
Quarry Run Dog Park provides an exceptional opportunity for dogs to engage with their natural instincts, offering a refreshing alternative to more manicured urban parks. It caters to dogs with energy to burn and a love for exploration, promising an adventure with every visit. For residents of Portland and the surrounding communities, it represents a significant amenity that supports the health and happiness of their four-legged family members. Let’s delve into what makes Quarry Run Dog Park a remarkable and beloved spot for dog lovers throughout Maine.
Quarry Run Dog Park is conveniently located at 1026 Ocean Ave, Portland, ME 04103, USA. This address places it within easy reach for residents across Portland and the greater Southern Maine area, including communities like Falmouth, Westbrook, and South Portland. Its urban yet natural setting makes it a highly accessible destination for daily exercise or weekend adventures with your dog.
Accessibility to the park is generally straightforward, being on Ocean Avenue, a recognizable thoroughfare in Portland. Visitors will find that the park has a clear entrance, often equipped with essential amenities right at the start. While specific parking details aren't provided in the reviews, its location on Ocean Ave, a main road, usually implies available street parking or a dedicated lot nearby, which is common for larger city parks. The most notable aspect of its accessibility, however, is the park's fully fenced perimeter. This provides a crucial sense of security, allowing owners to let their dogs run freely without the constant worry of them venturing into nearby roads or getting lost. One reviewer explicitly states, "It has a fence around the entire park and incorporates trees and a natural habitat. My dog had a blast here and I didn’t have to worry about her running into the road!" This comprehensive fencing significantly enhances its accessibility as a safe off-leash zone, making it a top choice for responsible dog owners throughout Maine.
Quarry Run Dog Park focuses on providing a secure and natural environment for off-leash dog play, offering essential amenities to support a positive experience.
Fully Fenced Off-Leash Play Area: The park's primary service is a secure, fenced perimeter encompassing a very large area. This allows dogs to run, play, and socialize freely without the constraint of a leash, providing a safe and expansive space for exercise.
Natural Terrain and Trails: Unlike flat, open parks, Quarry Run offers a "wooded and hilly space with trails around and through." This service provides diverse terrain for dogs to explore, promoting varied exercise and mental stimulation.
Waste Management Facilities: "Poop bags and trash at the entrance" are provided, facilitating responsible waste disposal and contributing to the park's cleanliness. This is a crucial service for maintaining a hygienic environment.
Natural Habitat for Exploration: The park "incorporates trees and a natural habitat," offering a more stimulating and enriching environment for dogs than a plain grassy field. This promotes natural sniffing, exploring, and engaging with diverse scents and textures.
A key consideration in terms of services is the absence of water: "no water" is available within the park. This means owners must take responsibility for bringing their own water for their dogs, especially during warmer weather or after strenuous activity on the trails.
Quarry Run Dog Park distinguishes itself with several unique features that make it a standout destination for dog owners in Portland, Maine.
Expansive and Natural Landscape: A significant highlight is its size and terrain. It's described as a "very large wooded and hilly space with trails around and through." This offers a natural, adventurous environment, unlike typical flat dog parks, providing varied exercise and stimulation for dogs.
Full Perimeter Fencing: Despite its natural and vast layout, the park features a "fence around the entire park." This is a critical safety feature, ensuring dogs can run freely off-leash without the risk of wandering into unsafe areas like roads. This offers immense peace of mind for owners.
Natural Habitat Immersion: The park "incorporates trees and a natural habitat," allowing dogs to engage with their instincts, explore diverse scents, and enjoy the outdoors in a more authentic way. This provides a rich sensory experience.
Convenient Waste Stations: The provision of "Poop bags and trash at the entrance" makes it easy for owners to be responsible and keep the park clean, which contributes to a pleasant experience for all visitors.
Adventure for Energetic Dogs: Given its spacious and varied terrain, the park is particularly well-suited for high-energy dogs or those who love to hike and explore. It provides a true "run" opportunity.
Peace of Mind: The full fencing means that owners "didn’t have to worry about her running into the road," highlighting a crucial safety benefit that elevates the park's appeal.
An important feature to be aware of, as noted by a reviewer, is the park's suitability for dogs with strong recall. "Given the space and the terrain, this park is probably not well suited if your dog does not have good recall." This suggests that while fenced, the vastness and natural elements mean a dog could potentially get out of sight, emphasizing the importance of voice control even within the fence.
As a public dog park managed by the City of Portland, Quarry Run Dog Park does not typically offer traditional commercial "promotions" or "special offers" (e.g., discounts, sales). Its value is inherent in its provision as a free, accessible, and unique recreational space for the community's dogs and their owners.
However, the "special offers" from Quarry Run Dog Park come in the form of unique benefits that enhance the experience for local users:
Free Access to a Unique Natural Environment: The most significant "promotion" is the ability to utilize a large, fully-fenced, wooded, and hilly park with natural trails at no cost. This offers a distinct experience compared to more common flat, grassy dog parks.
Enhanced Safety Features: The comprehensive fencing around the entire park provides a crucial "offer" of safety, allowing owners to let their dogs off-leash with significantly reduced concern about them running into unsafe areas. This peace of mind is invaluable.
Stimulating Terrain for Dogs: The "wooded and hilly" landscape provides a naturally stimulating environment that encourages more varied physical activity and mental engagement than a flat area, acting as an implicit "offer" for a richer dog experience.
Convenient Waste Management: The provision of "Poop bags and trash at the entrance" acts as a practical "offer" that supports responsible pet ownership and contributes to a clean park environment.

For dog owners in Portland, Maine, and the surrounding communities, Quarry Run Dog Park is an exceptionally suitable and highly valued local amenity, particularly for those seeking a more adventurous and natural off-leash experience. Its most significant advantage is its "very large wooded and hilly space with trails," which offers a refreshing departure from typical flat dog parks. This diverse terrain provides an engaging environment for dogs to explore, encouraging more vigorous exercise and mental stimulation as they navigate natural obstacles and varied scents.
A critical feature that makes it ideal for locals is the "fence around the entire park." This comprehensive fencing provides immense peace of mind, allowing owners to confidently let their dogs run freely off-leash without the constant worry of them wandering onto roads or getting lost in the vast natural area. For many dog owners, especially those with adventurous pups, this safety measure is paramount. The park's integration of "trees and a natural habitat" means dogs can truly immerse themselves in a more authentic outdoor experience, which is particularly appealing for those who love to hike or explore with their pets.
While the park's large, natural expanse means that "good recall" is important for dogs to stay visible, the overall secure environment still mitigates much of the risk associated with open spaces. The provision of "poop bags and trash at the entrance" also demonstrates a commitment to cleanliness and responsible pet ownership, which benefits the entire community. For Portland locals seeking a vibrant, spacious, and naturally stimulating environment where their dogs can run freely and safely, Quarry Run Dog Park is an outstanding choice, offering an unparalleled outdoor adventure right within their city. It’s a true gem for canine exploration in Maine.

Jan 29, 2025 · Bruno LemesWe were visiting Portland and wanted to find a dog park where our puppy could get out and run. Quarry run came highly recommended by some locals we spoke with and this park didn't disappoint. It has an expansive, fenced-in area with a diversity of terrain for the dogs to explore. The community of dogs was friendly, welcoming and playful with our pup. The owners were all great as well. Quarry run is a treasure.
Feb 16, 2025 · Evans CurticeWe had a great time here at the dog park today! It was nice to be able to go on a small hike in a fenced area. There was also an open area where we could play fetch. We were mostly alone during the time we were there. The other dogs and people we encountered were friendly! What a great place for Portland dog owners!
