Cute little park just off the highway. Mostly, grass on the small dog side, but the large dog side has been worn down and us very dusty (and I imagine can get muddy). No water, although bags and trash were available.

Introduction / Overview

For dog owners across Connecticut, finding a dedicated space where their beloved canine companions can freely run, play, and socialize is an essential part of responsible pet ownership. For residents of Putnam and the surrounding "Quiet Corner" of Connecticut, this park provides a convenient and reliable destination for daily exercise, social interaction, and simply enjoying quality time outdoors with their four-legged family members. Its welcoming atmosphere and commitment to safety make it a go-to spot that significantly contributes to the well-being and happiness of canine residents in the region.

Putnam Lions Memorial Dog Park is conveniently located at 16 Kennedy Dr, Putnam, CT 06260, USA. Its address places it just off the highway, making it easily accessible for residents of Putnam and neighboring communities, as well as for those traveling through Northeastern Connecticut. This strategic location ensures that a fun, off-leash adventure for your dog is never too far away.

The park features a double-gated entry system, a vital safety measure that provides an added layer of security, preventing accidental escapes as dogs and owners enter and exit. Its proximity to the Putnam Riverview Marketplace Pavilion means it's part of a broader community area, and for those who enjoy combining activities, the Putnam Saturday Farmers Market is also held nearby (though not necessarily when the park is visited). Services Offered

Putnam Lions Memorial Dog Park provides a range of essential services and amenities designed to create a safe, clean, and enjoyable experience for dogs and their owners.

  • Separate Fenced Areas for Small and Large Dogs: A key feature for dog safety and enjoyment, the park is thoughtfully divided into two distinct, securely fenced areas. One enclosure is specifically designated for smaller dogs (the small dog side often has more grass), and another section is for larger dogs. This separation helps ensure safer play dynamics, allowing dogs to interact with others of appropriate size and temperament, reducing the risk of accidental injury or stress.
  • Off-Leash Play Zones: Within both the large and small dog enclosures, dogs are permitted to roam and play off-leash. This freedom is vital for a dog's physical exercise and mental stimulation, allowing them to run, chase, and explore without restraint. Owners are expected to maintain verbal control of their dogs at all times.
  • Waste Bag Dispensers and Trash Receptacles: To promote cleanliness and responsible pet ownership, the park provides readily available dog waste bags and numerous trash bins throughout the enclosures. This amenity makes it easy for owners to clean up after their dogs, helping to maintain a hygienic and pleasant environment for everyone.
  • Seating for Owners: Benches are typically available within the park, allowing owners to comfortably sit, relax, and observe their dogs playing. Some areas may also offer shaded seating.
  • Agility Obstacles (Reported): Some sources indicate the presence of obstacles for added fun, providing opportunities for dogs to engage in mentally and physically stimulating activities beyond just running.
  • Double-Gated Entrance: For enhanced safety, the park utilizes a double-gated entrance system, which helps prevent dogs from darting out as people enter or exit the main play area.
  • Free Parking: Ample, free parking is conveniently located nearby, contributing significantly to the accessibility of the park.

It is important to note that while some dog parks offer water fountains, user reviews for Putnam Lions Memorial Dog Park often mention that there is no water available, so visitors should plan to bring their own water for their dogs.

Features / Highlights

Putnam Lions Memorial Dog Park is highlighted by several key features that contribute to its appeal and positive user experiences:

  • Secure, Fully Fenced Environment: The entire park is securely fenced, providing a safe space where dogs can enjoy off-leash freedom without owners having to worry about them wandering off. This is a paramount feature for peace of mind.
  • Size-Specific Play Zones: The thoughtful division into separate, securely fenced sections for large and small dogs is a significant advantage. This design minimizes potential stress and maximizes enjoyment for all canines, ensuring that smaller or more timid dogs are not overwhelmed by larger, more boisterous playmates. The small dog side often maintains more grass, providing a softer surface.
  • Community-Supported Amenities: While a water fountain might not be a permanent fixture, the availability of poop bags and trash receptacles demonstrates a commitment to basic park maintenance and cleanliness, essential for a pleasant user experience. Reviews also sometimes mention the presence of dog bowls and toys, indicating a community spirit where users share resources.
  • Proximity to Other Community Facilities: The park's location just off the highway, with shared parking with the Putnam Riverview Marketplace Pavilion and near the Putnam Saturday Farmers Market, adds a layer of convenience. Visitors can combine a dog park visit with other local errands or leisure activities.
  • Room to Run: Despite sometimes being described as "cute little," reviews consistently confirm that the park provides "enough room to run off their energy," fulfilling its primary purpose as an exercise area for active dogs.
  • Friendly Atmosphere: User feedback often points to a generally positive environment where "dogs playing, people walking, talking," suggesting a welcoming social atmosphere for both dogs and their owners.
  • Double-Gated Entries: The presence of a double-gated entrance is a key safety feature, preventing dogs from accidentally escaping as people enter or exit.

It's important for visitors to be aware that the ground cover for the large dog side may become dusty or muddy due to wear, while the small dog side tends to retain more grass.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a public municipal dog park, sponsored by the Putnam Lions Club and managed by the town of Putnam Parks and Recreation Department, Putnam Lions Memorial Dog Park does not typically offer commercial promotions, discounts, or membership programs in the traditional sense, as access to the park is generally free for all visitors. Its primary "offer" is the provision of a high-quality, free-to-use public space for dogs and their owners.

However, locals can benefit from certain aspects and community initiatives:

  • Free Public Access: The park provides a valuable service to the community by offering a secure, off-leash environment without any entry fees. This makes it an accessible recreational option for all dog owners in Putnam and surrounding areas.
  • Community Events & Partnerships: The Putnam Lions Club, as the proud sponsor, is highly involved in community service. While not directly a park promotion, they may organize or support events in the broader Putnam area, sometimes utilizing the park or its vicinity for activities like their "Fall Classic Bike Ride" which has used the Riverview Marketplace Pavilion/Dog Park area for registration. Checking the Putnam Lions Club website (e-clubhouse.org/sites/putnam) or the Town of Putnam's official channels (putnamct.us) for event announcements is recommended.
  • Proximity to Farmers Market: The park's location adjacent to the Putnam Saturday Farmers Market (at Riverview Marketplace Pavilion) can be seen as an indirect "perk," allowing locals to combine a dog park visit with shopping for fresh local produce and goods.

Very nice small dog side and much larger big dog side. Great parking lot and easy short distance to the entrance. However, if you have a very small dog it can easily escape under the entrance gate to the small dog side. I have included my 8 pound chi letting herself in. She has also let herself out and now I block that spot with the garbage can. Makes it tough to do poopy patrol because I don't dare leave the gate.
