Nice park. The small dog side was closed when we visited. There’s nice little tunnels for the dogs to go through. It’s a nice area-I’ve seen bigger but I’ve seen smaller which is why I give it 4 stars. They do have running water so you don’t have to bring your own which is nice and there was also a few toys laying around. The location is also nice if you want to go for a little walk after your dog(s) are done at the park and there is a really nice playground if you have kids. Also, there’s a nice grass area too if you want to just have a picnic!! Nice area overall and nice dog park! Pet Safe Dog Park 7/10!

In the heart of Durham, one such destination consistently receives high praise and stands out as a true gem for both dogs and their human counterparts: the PetSafe Dog Park at Duke Park. This isn't just an ordinary fenced-in area; it's a thoughtfully designed and well-maintained facility that provides a dynamic environment for dogs of all sizes and energy levels.
Operated by Durham Parks & Recreation (DPR), the PetSafe Dog Park at Duke Park has become a vital part of Durham's vibrant pet-owning community. It's a place where dogs can joyfully run, explore unique play structures, socialize with newfound friends, and truly burn off energy in a secure setting. Owners, meanwhile, can relax and connect with other pet enthusiasts, confident that their dogs are in a healthy and stimulating environment. The park's commitment to safety, cleanliness, and providing engaging features, coupled with the rigorous registration requirements, makes it a highly recommended spot for anyone looking to enrich their dog's life and foster a strong bond within the local pet community.
The PetSafe Dog Park is conveniently located at 1608 Acadia St, Durham, NC 27701, USA. This address places it within the well-known Duke Park, a beloved neighborhood park in a historic and charming area of Durham. Its central location makes it easily accessible for residents throughout Durham and the surrounding communities, offering a convenient escape for urban pups.
Being an integral part of the larger Duke Park, the dog park benefits from ample and accessible parking, which is a significant advantage for visitors. The dog park operates from dawn to dusk daily, providing extensive hours for morning runs, midday play, or evening visits. However, it is crucial to note that, like other DPR dog parks, the PetSafe Dog Park at Duke Park undergoes routine maintenance closures. Specifically, it is closed from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the first Monday of every month for essential upkeep and cleaning. It is always a good practice to check the Durham Parks & Recreation website for any specific real-time closures, changes in hours, or event-related restrictions before you plan your visit. The broader Duke Park also offers a large playground, tennis and basketball courts, walking trails, and open green spaces, making it a fantastic destination for a full family outing.
PetSafe Dog Park at Duke Park, as a facility managed by Durham Parks & Recreation, provides a comprehensive set of services to ensure a safe, clean, and enjoyable experience for all:
Required Annual Registration and Tag System: To maintain a healthy and secure environment, all dogs using the park must be registered annually with Durham Parks & Recreation. This process mandates up-to-date vaccination records (rabies, distemper/parvo, bordetella) and a negative fecal exam. Upon successful registration, a DPR dog park tag is issued, which dogs must wear at all times while in the park, ensuring compliance and safety.
Separate Enclosed Areas: The park features two distinct, securely fenced-in areas: one specifically for small dogs and another for large dogs. This separation allows dogs of similar size and energy levels to play together safely, reducing potential stress and conflicts.
Running Water and Water Bowls: To keep active pups hydrated, the park provides access to running water and shared water bowls. This convenient amenity means owners don't necessarily need to bring their own water supply.
Free Pet Waste Bags and Disposal Bins: Promoting responsible pet ownership, the park offers readily available free dog poop bags and numerous waste bins throughout the facility. This helps maintain a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene.
Seating and Shade: For the comfort of human companions, there are benches and seating areas available, some with shade, allowing owners to relax and supervise their dogs in a comfortable setting.
What truly makes the PetSafe Dog Park at Duke Park a popular and highly-rated destination for Durham's dog owners are its unique and engaging features:
Interactive Play Structures: Unlike many basic dog parks, this facility boasts "nice little tunnels for the dogs to go through" and a "mountain" (likely a mound or hill) for climbing. These features provide mental and physical stimulation, adding an extra layer of fun to playtime.
Popular Sandbox Area: The park includes a "great sandbox that seems to be loved by all the dogs." This unique feature offers an alternative play surface for digging and rolling, which many dogs thoroughly enjoy.
Community Vibe: Reviews consistently highlight the presence of "very warm, friendly folks" at the park, fostering a welcoming and positive atmosphere for socialization among dog owners.
Well-Maintained Grounds: Users praise the park for being "nice" and "well maintained," indicating a commitment to cleanliness and upkeep by Durham Parks & Recreation.
Strategic Location within Duke Park: Being part of the larger Duke Park offers additional benefits. After their dogs are tired out, owners can enjoy a walk on the nearby trails, have a picnic in the grassy areas, or utilize the "really nice playground" if they have children, making it a versatile family destination.
As a public amenity managed by Durham Parks & Recreation (DPR), PetSafe Dog Park at Duke Park does not offer traditional "promotions" or "special offers" in the commercial sense. Instead, the primary "offer" is access to a high-quality, well-equipped dog park at an affordable annual registration fee.
Affordable Annual Registration: For Durham City Residents, the annual dog park tag fee is $17 per dog. For non-residents, the fee is $22 per dog. These fees are valid from January 1 to December 31 and are not prorated.
Multi-Dog Discount: DPR offers a discount for households registering multiple dogs. A $2.00 discount is applied to the second (and each additional) dog registered by the same customer. You can use specific coupon codes (e.g., "2dogs", "3dogs") when registering online to avail of this discount.
Access to All DPR Dog Parks: The annual dog park tag provides access to all Durham Parks & Recreation dog parks across the city, including Piney Wood Dog Park and Downtown Dog Park, offering excellent value for frequent users.
Community Events: While not a direct "promotion," DPR occasionally hosts canine-themed events like "Barktoberfest" or "Canine Field Day" which may be held at their dog parks. These events provide additional opportunities for socialization and fun, often at little to no extra cost for tag holders.
Registration can be conveniently completed online via DPRPlayMore.org, in person at 400 Cleveland Street, or by mail. After online registration, all required vaccination records and a signed liability waiver must be emailed to durhamdogpark@durhamnc.gov. It is essential to complete this process to receive your official DPR dog park tag, as all dogs are required to wear a current tag for entry.

Mar 08, 2023 · Kay RissaFantastic park to bring your pup! Tunnels, a "mountain" to climb, a great sandbox that seems to be loved by all the dogs, access to water including water bowls, seating in the shade with a table and very warm, friendly folks.
Jan 28, 2022 · Vicky KentA little quieter than Northgate park, but nice place for doggies to hang out. Has 2 adjacent fenced in areas, for small dogs and big. Park usually has ample poop bags too, in case you forget your own.
Mar 27, 2024 · Adam SkinnerNice park to take your dog. If your dog is very shy or a puppy you may want to take them when it’s just you all and no other dogs. There was a great dain there when I took my puppy and the owner would not stop his adult dog from pouncing on my puppy until my puppy hid under the table and I had to just leave. It your dogs aren’t really friendly don’t take them to the park and allow them to bully smaller dogs!
