Whether you're a long-time local or just passing through the beautiful California coastline, this park provides a fantastic opportunity for your dog to burn off energy, make new friends, and revel in the joys of off-leash play. It's a testament to a community spirit that cherishes both its human and animal inhabitants, and a touching tribute to two beloved members of that community.
Ozzi & Josh's Dog Park is conveniently located on McGregor Drive in Capitola, CA 95010, USA. Its placement within the larger McGregor Multiuse Park adds to its accessibility, as it sits alongside other recreational facilities such as a skate park and a bike park. This multi-use complex makes it a hub of activity, where different community members can enjoy their chosen pursuits side by side.
For those traveling by car, the park offers ample parking, which is a significant convenience for visitors, especially on busier days. Its proximity to Highway 17 makes it an ideal spot to stop and let your dog stretch their legs if you're driving through the region. Reviewers often highlight its ease of access for local users, noting that it's a "nice, basic spot to pull over and let my dog run around." This strategic location ensures that residents of Capitola and neighboring communities can easily access a quality off-leash dog park. The overall environment, shared with other recreational areas, creates a lively and engaging atmosphere.
Ozzi & Josh's Dog Park is designed to facilitate off-leash dog play and provides several essential amenities to support this primary function:
- Dedicated Off-Leash Areas: The park's main service is providing a secure and expansive space where dogs can run freely without a leash.
- Separated Dog Sections: To accommodate dogs of different sizes and temperaments, the park features separate fenced sections, often described as areas for small, medium, and large dogs. This thoughtful design helps ensure safer interactions and more comfortable play for all canines.
- Water Fountain for Dogs: A vital amenity for hydration, the park includes a water fountain specifically designed for dogs, allowing them to quench their thirst after energetic play.
- Shaded Seating Areas: For human companions, there are shaded seating areas where owners can relax and supervise their dogs, offering respite from the California sun.
- Double-Gated Entrance: The park features a double-gated entry system, adding an extra layer of security and preventing accidental escapes as dogs enter and exit.
- Waste Receptacles: Although some details regarding the availability of disposal bags are uncertain, the presence of waste receptacles encourages responsible pet ownership and helps maintain the park's cleanliness.
- Adjacent Porta Potties: Conveniently located near the dog park are porta potties, providing basic restroom facilities for human visitors.
Ozzi & Josh's Dog Park is celebrated by locals for several distinct features that contribute to its popularity and functionality:
- Friendly Community Vibe: Many regulars appreciate the friendly atmosphere, noting that weekdays, particularly between 11 AM and 1 PM, attract a pleasant mix of locals and other regulars. This fosters a strong sense of community among dog owners.
- Secure and Fully Fenced: The park is fully fenced, providing a secure environment for dogs to play off-leash, giving owners peace of mind.
- Ample Running Space: Despite being part of a multi-use complex, the dog park sections offer significant room for dogs to run, chase, and explore.
- Wood Chip Ground Cover: The park utilizes wood chips as a ground cover, which helps with drainage and managing muddy conditions, especially on rainy days, as noted by a customer review. This material also provides a softer surface for paws.
- Proximity to Skate Park: The park's adjacency to a skate and bike park creates a unique, lively dynamic. Reviewers mention that skaters often interact positively with the dogs, adding to the friendly ambiance.
- Tribute to Ozzi and Josh: The park is a beautiful tribute to Joshua Raine Laven and his beloved dog, Ozzi. Joshua, a bicyclist, tragically passed away in 2012, and his dog Ozzi was found by his side. A non-profit organization, Ozzi Dog Park, Inc., was established in their memory, using an unclaimed reward fund and fundraising efforts to help fully fund this dog park. This touching history adds a profound layer of meaning to the park, making it more than just a recreational area but a place of remembrance and community spirit.
While the park generally offers a positive experience, some users note the occasional presence of reactive dogs with inexperienced owners. However, consistent feedback suggests that major conflicts are rare, particularly during regular weekday hours.
As a public dog park managed by the City of Capitola, Ozzi & Josh's Dog Park does not typically offer commercial promotions or discounts. Its value is inherent in being a free and accessible community resource.
However, the park's unique history and the dedication behind its creation mean that community events and fundraising efforts occasionally take place in support of the park's ongoing maintenance and improvement. These initiatives are often driven by local organizations or through partnerships with the City of Capitola. For instance, the grand opening and dedication of the park, supported by Ozzi Dog Park, Inc. and local businesses like Gayle's Bakery, showcased community involvement. While not "promotions" in a commercial sense, these events offer opportunities for locals to engage with and contribute to the park's well-being. Californians interested in supporting or participating in such community-driven efforts should check the City of Capitola's official website or local community boards for announcements.

May 31, 2025 · Charlotte LandisThis was a nice, basic spot to pull over and let me dog run around. It's got a few sections (small, medium, large) I imagine for preferences of other dogs around. It was a rainy day, so the space was a bit muddy. They certainly have a great attempt to support muddy puddles with the bark! It's located near 2 porta potties and a skate + bike park. Plenty of parking when I was there too. Recommend stopping by if you're driving down the 17 highway. The park is a beautiful tribute to a gentleman (Josh) and his pup (Ozzie).
Dec 29, 2024 · Cheyenne ShineOnOur first time there. The park is small but separated for large and small breeds, which we love! A little to close to the skate park though, dogs go crazy over that. Would still go back. Very cute.
May 08, 2017 · SKM Music (Sara Marsalis)Only two places in the main dog park to sit, needs more benches. Lots of people not cleaning up after their pets either but this is a reflection on who comes here, not the park itself. It's on the edge of a beautiful wooded area on one side and a skate park on the other. I would return but maybe with my own folding chair.
Jun 17, 2022 · Kim FastVery well-kept dog park. Great also for bird watching during quieter times due to two groves of trees (one eucalyptus and one oak) meeting just beyond the fence and attracting different species. However, if your dog is sensitive to skateboard sounds or music, I would avoid. The skate and bike ramps are only one walkway over and can be intense for doggies.
