My favorite dog park in town. This park offers a lot of variety that really showcases the changing seasons. Most people and their dogs are super friendly and respectful. I love walking through the trees and making loops around the park. Sometimes people maintain a water station for dogs. Bring your own dog waste bags because they’re never restocked here.

This article will provide a detailed overview of what makes the Off-Leash Dog Park at Fernhill Park a top choice for locals, covering its location, available amenities, special features, and why it's a privilege to have such a space in our community.
The Off-Leash Dog Park is situated within the expansive Fernhill Park, officially located at 4050 NE Holman St, Portland, OR 97211, USA. This places it conveniently within the Fernhill neighborhood, accessible from various parts of Northeast Portland. The park boasts four acres dedicated to off-leash activity, part of Fernhill Park's larger 26-acre property. Accessibility for drivers is generally good, with street parking available along NE Holman St and surrounding residential areas. For those relying on public transport, several TriMet bus routes serve the area, with stops often just a short walk from Fernhill Park, making it convenient for many dog owners without personal vehicles. The off-leash area itself is characterized by its natural terrain, featuring a mix of open spaces and wooded sections with trees that offer shade and visual interest, contributing to the park’s appeal as a diverse environment for canine exploration. The presence of winding trails within the park, some leading through treed areas, enhances the walking experience for owners while their dogs enjoy their off-leash freedom.
While a public park facility, the Off-Leash Dog Park at Fernhill Park provides some essential services and amenities, though visitors should be prepared for typical public park conditions.
- Water Access: Reviewers mention that "sometimes people maintain a water station for dogs." This suggests that while a consistent, city-maintained water fountain might not always be operational or present, the community often steps up to ensure water availability. It is highly recommended that visitors bring their own water and a portable bowl to ensure their dog stays hydrated, especially during warmer months.
- Waste Disposal: Waste receptacles are available for proper disposal of dog waste. However, it is explicitly noted that dog waste bags "are never restocked here." Therefore, it is absolutely essential for all visitors to bring their own supply of dog waste bags to maintain the cleanliness and hygiene of the park, upholding the privilege of having such a space.
- Seating: As part of a larger city park, Fernhill Park likely offers benches or picnic tables in various areas, providing spots for owners to rest while their dogs play.
- Open 24 Hours: Information indicates that this off-leash area is open 24 hours a day, allowing for flexibility in visiting times. However, users should always exercise caution when visiting during off-peak hours or in low light conditions.
The Off-Leash Dog Park at Fernhill Park is cherished by locals for several distinct features and highlights:
- Spacious Off-Leash Area: The park dedicates a generous four acres to off-leash activity, providing ample room for dogs to run, play fetch, and explore without feeling confined. This vastness contributes to the "space and freedom for the dogs" that makes them "so happy," as noted by a grateful local user.
- Variety in Terrain: Unlike flat, open fields, this park "offers a lot of variety that really showcases the changing seasons." This means visitors can experience different landscapes throughout the year, from lush greenery in spring to vibrant foliage in autumn, enhancing the walking experience for owners and providing diverse sniffing opportunities for dogs. The presence of "trees" allows for walks "through the trees and making loops around the park."
- Friendly Community: A recurring theme in reviews is the positive social atmosphere. "Most people and their dogs are super friendly and respectful," which fosters a welcoming environment for new and returning visitors alike. This contributes to the park being a great place for dogs to socialize and for owners to connect.
- Natural Setting: The park's unfenced, natural setting, with its mix of open fields and wooded areas, gives it a more wild and adventurous feel compared to some more manicured dog parks. This allows dogs to engage with natural elements and enjoy a sense of true freedom.
- Scenic Views: While not explicitly detailed, Fernhill Park is known for offering some scenic views, and walking through its varied terrain allows for pleasant perspectives of the park's landscape.

May 15, 2025 · Aiyana SederlinI love the available water, the options of shade or sun, and the options of spaces near or away from other dogs. The boundary's between off leash and not were hard to see at first (they are the stone posts) but once I saw them, couldn't not see them- which I think is just a lovely way of stating the boundary without ruining the beauty of the park and the fact that this off leash area has no fences! No fences! Part of what I like about it :)
Jun 11, 2019 · STop notch dog park, love that it does not have fences or gates, so the park feels so spacious. No muddy spots or puddles on rainy days, but be sure to bring your own water because the water jugs are often empty here (or be a good samaritan & bring full jugs!). Beautiful fall foliage and well behaved pups, my lab loves coming here.
Nov 27, 2022 · Candace MoonOver the years the off leash area, which is not fenced, has been cut back significantly. The remaining area is heavily used so the grass turf is pretty beat up. Still, it's a friendly place to let your pup run around, sniff butts and chase a Frisbee.
